The eyes of the noble prince are clear of troubling sorrows,

Though a passing cloud has shaded their light.

    A fleeting veil, moving on,

Has dimmed their usual radiance for a time.

The shadow of a star's passing

Has clouded its brightness at its zenith.

Can serenity suffer any real harm

From a transient mist that comes between?

May God preserve your dear eyes

And guard them from all impending ills,

For if they are lowered, it is but merciful restraint

Of self and virtue, nothing less.

And if they seem clouded, it is but

What they have shielded from your generous hands.

A nobility that surpasses generosity, made perfect

    By the hand of destiny.

With a spirit accepting of trials

And a heart thankful in suffering.

No being but is tried by fate one day,

    Though great events seem trivial.

    So trouble cannot banish

    Tenderness from a valiant heart.

Between grief and solace you have

A noble balance and wise patience.

Sometimes grief prevails and is endured,

For sorrows small and great are equal.

And sometimes you grieve in remembrance until

    Tears soften even unyielding rocks.

When I see you burning with love

For one so newly gone, one so young,

I see in your downcast eyes

    Signs of wakefulness and reflection.

And in your face, his image still,

Clear as crystal in the brow.

He seems to gaze from that spirit world

As a bright distant star gazes down.

And I see in your eyes a far-off look

That stretches to the end of time.

Pursuing him there, intent upon him still,

The worst of fates, to lose the past.

I see tears flowing hot with grief

From a heart wounded and mournful.

Like streams bursting with the melting snows

    That pour from mountain heights.

The flowing tears and springs are equal in purity

Except that grief's waters are bitter.

Enough, O Muhammad, your eyes have wept enough,

O exhausted by these copious tears.

Can you weep when you are granted such knowledge

Of the Giver's grace and the Powerful's decree?

Can you weep when your son is comfort enough,

    When children throng about you?

Can you weep when the departed one

Now dwells blissful amid the maidens of paradise?

Forever alive in your heart and mind,

Fixed in conscience and in spirit.

    Fulfilled by your enduring devotion,

    Carried far on departing steeds.

    These tears cannot alter

What is foreordained and precisely measured.

But Allah willed goodness to be fruitful

So he watered it with their pure flow.
