1. لقد آن أن يستمرئ النوم ساهد

    وأن يستقر الألمعي المجاهد

    It is time for sleep to soothe the weary,

    And for the valiant warrior to rest.

  2. كأني به لم يقض في العمر ساعة

    بلا نصب يضني وهم يعاو

    As if he had not spent an hour in life

    Without toil and cares to trouble his soul.

  3. حياة عناء كلما رقيت بها

    إلى الخير نفس صارعتها المناكد

    A life of hardship - whenever I rise in it

    To seek good, my soul contends with me.

  4. برغم المنى أن غيب القبر فرقد

    أضاءت بما أضفى عليها الفراقد

    Despite my wishes, the grave will separate us -

    It shone with the radiance of the noble dead.

  5. وحجب ميمون النقيبة عن حمى

    بكته أدانيه أسى والأباعد

    And the auspicious shroud hid him from the zeal

    Of those who wept for him in sorrow from afar.

  6. شبيه بقتل موته حتف أنفه

    وما ذنبه إلا العلى والمحامد

    His death by fate is like one meeting his end;

    Yet his only crimes were glory and praise.

  7. وكنا نرجي أن يطول بقاؤه

    فعاجله سهم من الغيب صارد

    We hoped his life would be long,

    But a bolt from the unknown took him swiftly.

  8. رمي من وراء الظن راميه عامدا

    ومن يرم ختلا فهو جان وعامد

    Struck down by one who aimed though unseen,

    And he who shoots blindly is a devil intending harm.

  9. إلى من نقاضيه فتنتصف النهى

    ويسلم منه الأكرمون الأماجد

    To whom do we complain, that justice be served

    And the noble and splendid be spared?

  10. أيصدق كل الصدق ما هو موعد

    ويكذب كل الكذب ما هو واعد

    Can all truth be believed as promised

    And all promises seen as lies?

  11. إذا قام في ظلم على الدهر شاهد

    فما مثل داود شهيد وشاهد

    Whenever an injustice rises over fate,

    None compares to David as witness and martyr.

  12. بقلبي جراح كيف أرجو اندمالها

    وفي كل يوم من رفاقي فائد

    My heart bears wounds - how can I hope they will mend

    When each day takes another dear friend?

  13. يعز أساها ما حييت وهذه

    مآتمهم لا تنقضي والمشاهد

    I grieve their loss as long as I live, and their

    Sorrows are unending, though life goes on.

  14. ويأبى لي السلوان ما طفت بالحمى

    موائل من آثارهم ومعاهد

    Solace evades me wherever I roam

    Their dwellings and refuges imprinted there.

  15. ليعذرني الإخوان إن جف مرقمي

    فقد علم الإخوان من أنا فاقد

    May my brothers forgive me if my pen falters,

    They know well what I have lost.

  16. وجسمين عليل حار فيه طبيبه

    وهمي ثقيل قل فيه المساعد

    My body is frail, my physician confounded,

    My cares are heavy, and help is little.

  17. ويجهد ذهني شاغل بعد شاغل

    فمن أي روح تسمتد القصائد

    My mind is weary, distracted by thoughts without end -

    What spirit remains to shape these verses?

  18. حنانيك يا شيخ الصحافة من لها

    إذا ما استثير القلب والقلب هامد

    Your kindness, O Sheikh of the press - who else has it

    When the heart stirs though it slumbers?

  19. شديد عليها أن يزول بناتها

    ولم تتمكن أسها والقواعد

    Grievous that your daughters were taken from you,

    Though they left their mark wherever they dwelled.

  20. فمن يتصدى للشدائد مرهفا

    عزائم لا تقوى عليها الشدائد

    Who shoulders adversity with keen senses,

    With fortitude no distress can shake?

  21. ومن ينبري لا هائبا غير ربه

    يحامي بها عن قومه ويجالد

    Who rises fearless but for his Lord

    To defend his people and wage holy war?

  22. ومما يضيم الحر شقوة موطن

    بنوه نيام عنه والحر ذائد

    How it pains the free soul to see his land's sons

    Slumber while peril threatens and death looms.

  23. ظللت تقاسيهن والرأس مطرق

    ويثقل رضوى بعض ما أنت واجد

    You endured them with head bowed though pained,

    The burden of loss weighs heavily on the gentle heart.

  24. تريد من الأحداث ما لا يردنه

    فتنحت من قلب وهن جلامد

    You seek from fate what it does not intend,

    So you carved from a numb heart an awakening.

  25. دؤوبا تعني النفس حتى تذيبها

    ليصحو معتز وينهض قاعد

    Striving to rouse the soul until it melts,

    That the glorious may rise up from where they fell.

  26. وهمك هم الشرق حتى إذا بدت

    طليعة فوز بددتها المكايد

    Your concern is the East - and when the first

    Gleams of victory come, the schemes against it will scatter.

  27. فمن أي خصميه تصون حقوقه

    وأعدى له من غاصبيه المفاسد

    How can you defend the rights of an enemy,

    When the corrupt are so set on destruction?

  28. إذا دب خلف موهن في جماعة

    أيبلغها أدنى الأماني قائد

    If a coward creeps into the ranks

    Can a leader achieve the slightest good?

  29. سلوا أمما بادت وما تجهلونها

    تبصركم أعيانهن البوائد

    Ask the fallen nations, though you know them not -

    Their ruins will reveal their secrets.

  30. لداود كانت في كفاحية خطة

    يلاين فيها تارة ويعانا

    David had a strategy for my struggle,

    Bending as needed, enduring as required.

  31. محيطا بأطوار السياسة ساعيا

    برفق إلى إدراك ما هو ناشد

    Engaging politics in all its aspects, striving

    Gently to attain his highest aims.

  32. عليما بما يخشاه وهو مقارب

    عليما بما يرجوه وهو مباعد

    Knowing what he feared yet ready to reconcile,

    Knowing what he hoped for though distant.

  33. وألين ما تلفيه وهو مخالف

    وأثبت ما تلفيه وهو معاهد

    Gentle with dissent though opposed,

    Steady with agreement though covenant was fraught.

  34. وما فكره في نهضة العصر جامد

    وما حسه في موطن البر جامد

    Never rigid in thought for the age's reform,

    Never cold in care for the homeland's good.

  35. سماحة نفس تلتقي في مجالها

    على الرحب آراء الورى والعقائد

    A generous spirit whose breadth encompasses

    The myriad views and creeds of mankind.

  36. لها شرعة في كل حال نقية

    مصادرها محمودة والموارد

    Its principles ever pure in any circumstance,

    Wellspring upright, course flowing clear.

  37. غذاها البيان العذب تهمي سحابه

    وتروي البهى أنهاره والسواعد

    It feeds on eloquence, clouds raining down,

    Watering life, hand outstretched to aid.

  38. فصول على تنويعها اجتمعت بها

    إلى طرف من كل ضرب فوائد

    Its seasons vary, yet within them unite

    Some virtue, some benefit new brought to light.

  39. فلا زعم إلا أيدته أدلة

    ولا حكم إلا وطدته شواهد

    No claim but evidence upholds it,

    No judgment but proof makes firm its witness.

  40. قليل لداود الذي قلد النهى

    حلى لا تباهى أن تصاغ القلائد

    Too little to adorn David with jewels

    Of praise - though finest necklaces are wrought.

  41. تعدد ما تهوى العلى في خصاله

    فمن حيث تبغي وصفه فهو فارد

    The heights he aspires to cannot be contained;

    Seek from any aspect, and perfection is revealed.

  42. ينمي لمواليه ولم يتعاقدا

    كما ينفذ الصك الأمين المعاقد

    He builds his loyal allies though untethered by vows,

    As the honest pact strictly binds and executes.

  43. ويغفر للخدن المجافي جفاءه

    ولو أن ذاك الخدن للفضل جاحد

    He forgives the cold and ungrateful their scorn,

    Though to merit he is no ingrate.

  44. فإن ير شيئا فهو للعذر قابل

    وإن ير زينا فهو جذلان حامد

    If he sees a fault, he accepts excuse,

    If virtue, he is first to applaud.

  45. ولا يتعدى الحد في نقد زائف

    إذا ما تعدى ذلك الحد ناقد

    He keeps within bounds, not vicious in shallow critique

    Should another overstep in censure there.

  46. ويرعى ذوي القربي رعاية والد

    فأبناؤه كثر وما هو والد

    He tends his kin as a father does,

    So his sons multiplied, though no sons he begot.

  47. ويدرك أقصى الآملين بجوده

    كأن له وجدا وما هو واجد

    The furthest hopes he realizes with his gift,

    As if he possessed what he did not.

  48. رئيس ويأبى طبعه أن يكونه

    فتلقى على كره إليه المقالد

    A leader, though his way is not to lead -

    He bears rule forced on him with disdain.

  49. فذلك داود الحليم وربما

    تنكر معروف ونكب قاصد

    So goes gracious David, though perhaps,

    Rebuffed, his purpose twisted awry.

  50. إذا سامه خسفا عتي ومارد

    ثناه إلى المثلى عتي ومارد

    He may flash fierce as lightning under heavy brows

    As flames spark and kindle under ash.

  51. يلأليء تحت الحاجب الجثل لحظه

    كما شب تحت الغيهب النار واقد

    Anger rises like the mountain's lava,

    Mighty in days of trial and strife.

  52. وتبدو منه غضبة جبلية

    لها جؤجؤ يوم الحفاظ وساعد

    O House of Barakat, though you despair, comfort

    Will come and the world relent of its bitterness.

  53. بني بركات إن جزعتم فرزؤكم

    تعاف له الدنيا وتجفى الوسائا

    But my wound, O the wounds of all hearts,

    Will outlast leaves upon the bough.

  54. ولكن أسا آسي القلوب جراحكم

    بما لا يواريه طريف وتالد

    All Arab people share your agony -

    Measure it by the trembling Lebanon laid waste.

  55. شجا ما شجاكم أمة الضاد كلها

    فقيسون مهتز ولبنان مائد

    Sweet Euphrates shuddered, Tigris was shaken,

    As when clouds swell and bolt the horizon.

  56. ومر الفرات العذب وارتاع دجلة

    وشجت كأجفان الكظيم الروافد

    In Egypt a fervent people flocked to you -

    Emigres thronging to join their gathering host.

  57. وفي مصر شعب مائج في رحابكم

    تقاطر يتلو وافدا منه وافد

    Loyalty called them, and the renown you embody,

    Custom held over generations.

  58. دعاه الوفاء المحض والكرم الذي

    تعوده فيه مسود وسائد

    The procession was unending, though none pressed

    Or drove it onward by demand.

  59. مواكب سارت بالجنازة لم تسق

    إليها ولم يغلظ عليها مناشد

    Eyes downcast, witnesses through to the final step -

    None could reckon the length of that sorrowful march.

  60. مقاصر عنها طرف كل مشاهد

    وطالت فلم يدرك مداها مشاهد

    It was solace enough that the East grieved with you

    For one who, though mourned, lives on and endures.

  61. كفى سلوة أن شاطر الشرق حزنكم

    على أن من تبكون حي وخالد
