فَخْرُ الْبِلاد بِعَهْدهَا الْمُتَجَدِّد
سَيَظَلُّ مُقْتَرِناً بِذِكْرَى أَحْمَدِ
The pride of the country lies in its ever-renewing era
Which will remain associated with the memory of Ahmed
مَاذَا يُعَزِّي عَنْهُ أُمَّتهُ وَهَلْ
لِلأُمِّ سَلْوى عَنْ فَتَاهَا الأَوْحَدِ
What can console his nation, and can
A mother find solace for the loss of her only son?
لَوْ فِي عُلاَهَا فَرْقَدانِ لَهَانَ مَا
تَلْقَى وَكَانَ لَهَا العَزَاءُ بِفَرْقَد
If the nobility were to fall asleep, no consolation could be found
And she would have been comforted by the sleep
نَجْمٌ تَرَامَى النُّورُ مِنْ عَلْيَائه
فَأَضَاءَ آفَاقَ الزَّمَانِ الأَرْبَد
A star whose light shone from its height
And illuminated the horizons of time
لأْلاَؤُهُ يَرْفَضُّ أَلْوَاناً وَفِي
ذَاكَ التَّشعُبِ قُوَّةٌ لَمْ تُعْهَد
Its pearls reject colors while in
That ramification lies unmatched strength
وَالعَبْقَرِيَّة قَدْ تُفَرِّقُ فِي حَلىً
شَتَّى مَظَاهِرِ وَحْيِهَا المْتُوَقِّد
And genius can separate in various forms
The manifestations of its kindled inspiration
عَجَبٌ وَمَوْرِدهُّن مِنْهَا وَاحِدٌ
أَنْ يَخْتَلِفْنَ عَلَى اتِّفَاقِ الْمَوْرِد
A wonder - their source is one
Yet they differ in agreement at the spring
وَالَهْفَ مِصْرَ عَلَى فَقَيدٍ رِزْءُهُ
رِزْءٌ إِذَا أَحْصَيْتُهُ لَمْ يُعْدَد
And Egypt grieves for a loss, its affliction
Is an irreparable affliction if counted
نَزَلَ الْقَضَاءُ بِه فَطَاحَ بِعَالِمٍ
مُتَفَوِّقٍ وَبِحَاسِبِ مُتَفَرِّد
Fate befell him, and a matchless scholar fell
And an incomparable wise man
وَبِمُنْشِيءٍ مَا صَاغَ إِلاَّ الْمُنْتَقَى
وَبِمُفْصِحٍ مَا قَالَ غَيْرَ الْجيِّد
And a composer who created nothing but the exquisite
And an eloquent speaker who said nothing but the best
وَبِمُحْكَمِ التَّدْبِيرِ يَرْعَى مَا رَعَى
قَصْداً وَيُسْرِفُ فِي الْعنَاءِ الْمُجْهَد
With his firm management he led what he led
With moderation and exerted overwhelming effort
تُبْدِي لِعَيْنَيْهِ الأُمُورُ لُبَابَهَا
وَيُحَلُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ كُلُّ مُعَقَّد
Matters show their essence to his insight
And every complexity unravels before him
نَاهِيكَ بِالشِّيمِ الْحِسَانِ وَقِسْطِهِ
مِنْ كُلِّهَا قِسْطِ الأَعَزِّ الأَمْجَد
Not to mention his virtuous traits and justice
He had a share of each, the share of the most honorable and glorious
أَخْلاَقُ مُقْتَدِرٍ حَلِيمٍ حَازِمٍ
سَمْحٍ قَوِيمِ النَّهْجِ طَامِي الْمَقْصدِ
The manners of a forbearing, calm, decisive
Lenient, straight-guided man with a lofty purpose
يَهدِي سَنَاهُ سَبِيلَ كُلِّ مُثَقَّفٍ
جَارَتْ بِهِ الدُّنْيَا فَلَيْسَ بِمُهْتَدِ
His example guides every cultured person
The world was civilized with him, so none are guided
ويَصِيبُ مِنْهُ كُلَّ طَالِبِ نَجْدَةٍ
حَظّاً إِذَا مَا قِيلَ هَلْ مِنْ مُنْجِدِ
And every seeker of help attains from him
A lot, if asked "is there anyone who helps?"
يَلْقَاكَ بِالْبِشْرِ الطَّلِيقِ وَأَنْتَ مِنْ
إِجْلاَلِهِ تِلْقَاءَ أَهْبَبَ أَصْيَدِ
He meets you with cheerful tidings while you
Are in awe of him, like a frightened prey
مَا كَانَ أَسْكَتَهُ وَأَرْبَطَ جَأْشِهِ
فِي لَزْبَةِ الحَدَثٍ الْمُقِيمِ الْمُقْعَدِ
None could silence him, nor rein in his ardency
In the fervor of lively debate
نَفَعَ الصِّناعَةَ وَالزِّرَاعَةَ بَاذِلاً
لِصَلاَحِ حَالِهِمَا يَداً تِلْوَ الْيَد
He brought benefit to industry and agriculture
Extending hand after hand for their reform
وَرَعَى مَعَاهِدَ الاقْتِصَادِ فَأَزهَرَتْ
وَقَضَتْ مُنىً بِعَدِيدِها الْمُتَعَدِّدِ
And oversaw the pacts of economics, so they flourished
And fulfilled their manifold multiplying aims
كَانتْ خَزَائِنُ مِصْرَ طَوْعَ بَنَانِهِ
وَمَضَى نَقِيّاً جَيبُهُ حُلْوَ الْيَد
Egypt's treasures were under his construction
And his coffers remained untainted by the hand
إِلاَّ فُضُولاً مِنْ مُحَلِّلِ كَسْبِهِ
لَمْ تُحْتَسَبْ فِيْهَا مُعَاجَلَةُ الْغَد
Except for surplus from his dividends
No urgency for tomorrow was calculated
لَوْلاَ النَّزَاهَةُ وَهْيَ أَغْلَى ذُخْرِه
مَا مَاتَ مُغْنِي الْقَوْمِ شِبْهَ مُجَرَّدِ
If not for his integrity, his most precious treasure
The provider of his people would not have died destitute
وارَحْمَتَا لِلْمُسْتَقِرِّ بِرِغْمِهِ
وَالْعَزْمُ بَيْنَ ضُلُوعِهِ لَمْ يَهْمُدِ
Have mercy on the settled soul despite his will
And determination in his ribs did not subside
مِصْر الْهَوَى لَمْ بَلْهِهِ عَنْهَا هَوىً
فَإِذَا دَعَتْ لَبَّى وَلَمْ يَتَرَدَّدِ
Egypt's passion - he did not indulge passion from it
So if it called, he readily responded and did not hesitate
أَدْمَى حَشَاهَا أَنْ يَجُودَ بِنَفْسِهِ
حُباً وَلَمْ تَمْلُك فِدىً لِلْمُفْتَدِي
It pained its loyal one that he would sacrifice himself
Out of love, and it had no ransom for the sacrificed
قَبْلَ الأَوَانِ ثَوَى وَكَمْ مِنْ لَفْتَةٍ
يَوْمَ اسْتَقَلَّ لِفَاقِدٍ مُتَفَقِّدِ
He passed too soon, and how many glances
On the day he missed the searching one
سَارَتْ تُشَيِّعهُ الْجُمُوعُ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ
فِيهَا سِوَى الْبَاكِي أَوِ الْمُتَنَهِّدِ
Multitudes escorted him, and among them
Was only the weeping or the sighing
وَتَسَاوَتِ الطَّبقَاتُ خَاشِعَةً فَلَمْ
يُرَ مَشْهَدٌ بِجَلاَلِ ذَاكَ الْمَشْهَدِ
And all classes gathered reverently, so never before
Was a scene witnessed with the splendor of that scene
يَا رَاحِلا أَتَتِ الْمَنِيَّة دُونَهُ
وَبِهِ النُّفوسُ عَوَالِقٌ لاَ تُبْعَدِ
O traveler, death came before him
While souls were still infatuated, not weaned
صِمْصَامُ قَوْمٍ أَغْمَدَتْهُ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ
أَيَّامَ حَاجَتِهِمْ إِليْهِ بِمُغَمَدِ
The sword of a people, sheathed while he was not
In their time of need of him, sheathed
وَشِهَابُ أَوْجٍ عُطِّلتْ عَلْيَاؤُهُ
مِنْ أَفْخَرِ الزِّيناتِ فِي الْمُتَقَلِّدِ
The flame of a brilliant peak, its loftiness stilled
Among the most superb ornaments of the decorated
فِي الْحَقِّ أَنَّك نِمْتَ نَوْماً هَادِئاً
سَيَطُولُ أَمْ هَذَا غِرَارُ مُسَهَّدِ
In truth, you slept a tranquil sleep
Will this last long, or is this slumber transient?
وَرَحَمْتَ نَفْسَكَ أَمْ عَصَتْكَ فَأُسْقِ
طَتْ عَنْهَا تَكَالِيفُ الجِهَادِ السَّرْمَدِ
You pitied yourself or disobeyed, so were relieved
Of the eternal holy war's burdens
مَنْ ظَنَّ خِلْوَتَكَ الأَمِينَةَ حَوْمَةً
فِيهَا تُلاَقِي مَصْرِعَ الْمُسْتَشْهِدِ
Whoever thought your trusted retreat was a conspiracy
In which the fate of the martyr is encountered
سَتَعِيشُ بِاسْم فِي الْقُلُوبِ مُخَلَّدٍ
إِن كَانَ هَذَا الْجِسْمُ غَيْرَ مُخَلَّد
You will live forever in hearts
If this body does not last forever
وَسَيَكْمِلُ إِبْنُكَ مَا بَدَأْتَ مُؤَيَّداً
بِرِعَايَةِ اللهِ الْعَلِّي الأَيِّدِ
And your son will complete what you began, supported
By God's care, the Exalted, the Supporter
يَا سرَّ أَحْمَدَ وَالْبَقَاءُ تَسَلْسُلٌ
مَاذَا تُسَامُ لِصَوْنِ أَكْرَمِ مَحتدَ
O secret of Ahmed, and continuity is legacy
What can match the protection of the most honorable sanctuary?
أَعْزِزْ عَلَى الْقُرَبَاءِ وَالبُعَدَاءِ أَنْ
تُمْنَى بِفَقْدِ أَبِيكَ مُنْذُ الْمَوْلِدِ
Bolster, over kin and strangers, that you
Yearn for your father's absence since birth
عِشْ لِلْحِمَى وَانْبُتْ نَبَاتاً صَالِحاً
وَانْبُغْ وَكُنْ زَيْنَ العُلَى وَالسُّؤْدَدِ
Live for the protective pact, and grow into a worthy plant
Aspire and be the beauty of the sublime and guidance
