1. عز المعالي مات يوسف سابا

    عز الفضائل فيه والآدابا

    O honor's apogee - Joseph Saba has died

    O honor of virtues in him and civility

  2. عز الإمارة والوزارة والندى

    والبأس والأنساب والأحسابا

    O honor of emirate, ministry, dew

    And valor, amiability, lineage and accounts

  3. وإلى جميع الشرق فانع مهذبا

    فقدانه في الشر عم مصابا

    And to all the East an accomplished mentor

    His loss has caused universal sorrow

  4. ما حال مصر ودون يوسف قد جرى

    حكم القضاء فقطع الأسبابا

    What's Egypt's state without Joseph who hastened

    By destiny's decree connections were severed

  5. خطب على التعداد في أمثاله

    راع النفوس وحير الألبابا

    He was eulogized for his peerlessness

    The shepherd of souls, bewilderer of minds

  6. فكأن ما يرديه في بطن الثرى

    يرميه من كبد السماء شهابا

    As if what inters him in the earth's belly

    Was flung from the liver of the sky like a meteor

  7. مات الذي ملئت صحائف عمره

    آيا تضمنها الفخار كتابا

    Died he whose life filled pages

    With signs safekept in pottery scripture

  8. وبها سما أوج المراتب واقتنى

    أسنى السمات وأحرز الألقابا

    Thereby he reached honor's summit and gained

    The finest traits and won epithets

  9. ولي الوزارة لم يخله حينما

    لبى على الآساد يدخل غابا

    As minister he never when responding

    To lions entered the jungle diffident

  10. ورآه كم رؤيا كذوب ناهجا

    نهجا يفيد اليل والأعقابا

    Many saw him as a mendacious illusion

    Pursuing a path benefiting night and darkness

  11. حتى إذا كشفت له عما بها

    لم يرضه فخر تبطن عابا

    Until revelations exposed his essence

    Not self-aggrandizing - he shunned all blame

  12. ولي الإدارة رائضا علاتها

    يتدارك التحسين بابا بابا

    As administrator gently handling affairs

    He rectified flaws door-to-door

  13. مهما يلاق من الصعاب يكد في

    طلب النجاح ولا يبال صعابا

    No matter the obstacles, he strived

    Seeking success - cares not for hardship

  14. يوفي جزاء المستحق ويصطفي

    أدعى الأمور إلى الصلاح عقابا

    Justly rewarded the deserving, chose

    What's best for propriety - his discipline a deterrent

  15. فغدا البريد بمصر وهو وليه

    عجبا لمن عرف النظير عجابا

    Thus under his rule Egypt's post

    Became a marvel - who's seen its peer?

  16. أسفا على ذاك الذي عن قومه

    في كل محمدة أنيب ونابا

    Alas, he who was there for his people

    Turned to him in every tribulation

  17. قد كان في الظلمات كوكب عزهم

    فاليوم كوكب عزهم قد غابا

    He was the star of their honor in darkness

    Today the star of their honor has vanished

  18. إن الشيوخ إذا بكوه قرزؤه

    أبكى كهولا بعده وشبابا

    When elders weep his loss, the youth

    After them and children also weep

  19. صرف الزمان وقد رماه رمى به

    قلب المروءة والندى فأصابا

    Time has struck - it targeted and felled him

    The heart of integrity and dew - a blow landed

  20. لما نعوه نعوا هماما ماجدا

    ملأ النهى بصفاته إعجابا

    When he passed we lost a glorious pillar

    Whose qualities astounded all who heard

  21. وكأن ألسنة من البرق الذي

    ينعي مددن إلى القلوب حرابا

    As if tongues of lightning in dirge

    Struck hearts conveying bereavement

  22. كيف الضمير العبقري مشارفا

    هذا الوجود جلا أكان ضبابا

    How could that brilliant mind nearing

    This existence - was it merely a mirage?

  23. كيف البناء كذل الجسم الذي

    عمرته تلك الروح بات يبابا

    How could that body housing the spirit

    Whose life it built, become dilapidated?

  24. ذاك التبسم عن صفاء طوية

    ذاك البدار تحية وجوابا

    That smile of pure heart's clarity

    That splendor - greetings its repartee

  25. ذاك التلفت وهو من صيد امرئ

    ما هان يوم كريهة أو هابا

    That glance - he one whose gaze like a hunter's

    Never dropped on a disliked or dreaded day

  26. ذاك المحيا مشرقا في لحية

    زان السواد بها بياض شابا

    That beard luminous with blackness

    Adorned by youthful whiteness interlaced

  27. تلك اللحاظ سدسدة فإذا نبت

    فلعلها تجد المريب فتابى

    Those features - if anguish sprouts

    It may find remorse and turn back

  28. تلك الشمائل والمعارف والنهى

    والحسن والحسنى أصرن ترابا

    Those traits, knowledge, propriety

    Beauty external and inner - all turned earth

  29. لم يرض سابا أن يكون له عدى

    واستكثر الإخوان والأحبابا

    Saba never wished to make enemies

    And had plentiful comrades and loved ones

  30. ما قال فاحشة ولم يهمم بها

    يوما ولم يلمم بأمر رابا

    No vulgarity he uttered or pondered

    Nor plotted matters gross or wicked

  31. فاظنن بعال منصبا ووظيفة

    ما اغتابه الحساد أو ما اغتابا

    I think that with high office and position

    No envy or envy from him came forth

  32. من لم يفرط في حساب ضميره

    لم يخش يوما للعباد حسابا

    Who doesn't transgress his conscience's bounds

    Never fears people's judgement or doubts

  33. أعرفت حرا غير سابا لم يجئ

    قولا وفعلا ما يثير عتابا

    I knew none as noble as Saba whose

    Words and acts stirred no disapproval

  34. إن مر ورد الدهر ظل حديثه

    عذبا وإن خبثت أناس طابا

    When days passed his words remained

    Sweet though some soured - his pure

  35. سمح إلى الإتلاف إن يتقاضه

    ذاك الوفاء ولم يظن ثوابا

    Magnanimous despite people's wrongs

    Not seeking reward or anticipating praise

  36. ما أم مشرع جاهه أو ماله

    قمن بتحقيق الرجاء فخابا

    No ambitious minister or moneyed man

    Attained hopes by guile or deceit

  37. متنزه عالي الجناب وقل من

    جمع التنزه والعلو جنابا

    Noble, lofty - and rare one who combines

    Nobility and loftiness in manner

  38. يتوسم الإخلاص في أعماله

    حتى ليوشك أن يشف حجابا

    Assumes sincerity in all his deeds

    As though a veil between them will lift

  39. ثبت على الرأي الصحيح فإن يقع

    خطأ تجده الراجع التوابا

    Firm on the right view - if mistaken

    You find him remorseful and relenting

  40. لم يدعه داع لأمر واجب

    إلا تشمر مسرعا وأجابا

    No duty's call left unheeded

    Rushing to respond - he always obeyed

  41. بالجد يكسب في النفوس مهابة

    ويقل ما شاء الكمال دعابا

    Through resolve he instilled awe

    And fulfilled perfection - no jesting

  42. يدع القشور لكل دي لهو بها

    ويرى الأمور حقيقة ولبابا

    He shed externals, saw matters' essence

    In truth - with reason's vision surveyed

  43. لا يعرف الدعوى ولا يرضي امرأ

    كذبا ويفعل ما استطاع صوابا

    Knew no pretense, wouldn't satisfy

    Lies - did all he could properly

  44. ويرى من المزري تكلف سيد

    في يوم صدق أن يقول كذابا

    Saw a lord's pretense on a real day

    To be like a liar saying such and such

  45. يوم سابا ما فعلت بأمة

    ثكلته دع أهليه والأصحابا

    O day you have done to a nation

    Bereaved - leave his family and comrades

  46. ألقطر مهتز الجوانب لوعة

    والنيل لو يعلو لسال سحابا

    Let tears flow - creation shakes with agony

    The Nile would surge storm clouds if able

  47. والوافدون يشيعون عزيزهم

    حشد به الطرقات ضقن رحابا

    The visitors walk in his honor

    Crowding streets - once wide now strait

  48. فكأن حول النعش بحرا مائجا

    وكأنه فلك يشق عبابا

    As if around his bier an ardent sea

    As if a ship cleaving waves sailing

  49. ما من أمير أو رفيع مكانة

    إلا عليه استمطر الأهدابا

    No prince or dignitary but shed

    Down his cheeks torrents flooding

  50. ما من يتيم أو ضعيف بائس

    إلا بكاه بحر قلب ذابا

    No orphan or destitute wretch

    Whose heart's sea didn't melt, flowing

  51. لله يا حلو الصداقة كم سقت

    هذي النوى فيك الأحبة صابا

    My God - O sweetest camaraderie

    How you quenched with love for him souls' thirst

  52. أليوم عدن استأنست من وحشة

    بأبر مبتكر إليها آبا

    Has this grove found company, its desolation ended

    By the most righteous to it coming?

  53. إن قلت لا تبعد فإنك بيننا

    هل مائت من يخلف الأنجابا

    If I say "Depart not" - you're among us

    But did you die - who will succeed the departed?
