عرض تقضى لم يمس الجوهرا

فالحمد للمولى على ما قدرا

An ordeal whose essence was untouched

So praise be to the Master of decree

صانت فؤادك من لدنه عناية

جعلت شفاءك للعناية مظهرا

Your heart was protected by His care

Making your healing a sign of that care

وأرتك من حب السرائر آية

في غير هاتكة السرائر لا ترى

And He made you a verse of the secret joys

In that realm of secrets you see naught else

يا نيرا جرؤ السقام فناله

عجبا أيقتحم السقام النيرا

O Nayyirah, maladies dared assail you

How strange that maladies assail the luminous!

خلنا مكانتك السنية مأمنا

من بلغ الأدواء هتيك الذرى

We made your august station a refuge

From when diseases disgrace creation

هزت لحادثك الربى وتحركت

لجج الأثير وروعت مهج الورى

Your misfortune shook the firmaments

And stirred the ether’s billows roiling spirits

وكأنما في كل صدر غصة

مما عرا الصدر الأبر الأطهرا

As if every breast now held a lump

From what had flowed that most pure breast

ريب تغشى كالغمام فما انجلى

حتى انثنى صوت النذير مبشرا

Doubt covered like clouds, and lifted not

Until the voice of warner turned glad tiding

هدأت نفوس الجازعين وبدلت

فرحا بما شاب الصفاء وكدرا

The souls of mourners calmed, and changed

From the sorrow that marred their serenity

فاغنم حياتك بالشباب مجددا

والعيش أرغد ما عهدت وأنضرا

So seize your life anew with youth

And live the most ease you have known, the freshest

واستأنف الأيام بعد متابها

في نعمة أوفى ومجدا أوفرا

Resume the days after their anguish

In greater bounty and ampler glory

وأعد إلى هذا الحمى أعياده

تزهو وتزهر في المدائن والقرى

Return the festivals to this sanctuary

To bloom and flower in cities and villages

لا غرو أن يهوى الأمير المفتدى

شعب رأى فيه الكمال مصورا

No wonder the cherished Prince is loved

By a people who see perfection imaged in him

ورأى حميد بلائه في نصره

حتى نجا من رقه وتحررا

And saw his stand in victory from his ordeal

Until he was saved from yoke and freed

ورآه للشورى ظهيرا صادقا

مذ ساس في الملك الأمور ودبرا

And saw him sincere partizan of consultation

Since he took the reins and managed affairs

مستعصم بالله يقفو دائما

سيرا بها العظماء زانوا الأعصرا

Al-Mu’tasim billah ever emulates

Ways by which the great ones gilded eras

مهما يجشمه هواه لقومه

من طائل لا يلفه متعذرا

Whatever his passion dictates for his people

Of formidable deeds beyond all feats

إيمانه يحميه في بأسائه

والصبر عدته إلى أن يظفرا

His faith protects him in his severities

And patience arms him till he prevails

آدابه لم يؤتها إلا امرؤ

صفى شمائله التلاد وكررا

His manners no one taught but a man

Who refined traits and repeatedly practiced them

فيرى الذي يسمو إليه طرفه

روضا من الشيم الحسان منورا

So that he sees what his gaze aspires to

As a garden of fine traits, illuminated

يا من له من نبعتيه عزة

ليست تسامى مظهرا أو مخبرا

O you whose strength from his riverbank is pride

Not rising in outward show or claim

في كل شأنك والوصاية بعضه

كنت النزيه الحازم المتبصرا

In all your undertakings and guardianship

You were judicious, decisive, discerning

وجلوت للدنيا خلال إمارة

جعلتك في كل القلوب مؤمرا

You disclosed in the days of your rule

Acts that placed you in every heart’s command

للعلم والآداب منك رعاية

أكدتها بمآثر لا تمترى

You gave science and arts your patronage

With works that cannot be denied

أشرعن فكرك للقرائح موردا

وجعلن شكرك للمدائح مصدرا

Your intellect opened horizons for talents

And your gratitude springs of laudation

وإلى الفنون صرفت فطنة جهبذ

يتخير الأحرى بان يتخيرا

To the arts you applied the perspicacity

Of one who picks what is best to hoard

بين الطريفة والعتيقة تنتقى

ما هيأته يد الصناع ليذخرا

You toured the east and west of the land

Exploring, investigating, inquiring

طوفت في شرق البلاد وغربها

مستطلعا مستقصيا مستخبرا

Splitting open closed minds

By God, researching and thinking!

تفري الفرا ولا مرد لهمة

جبت البرور بها وجزت الأبحرا

However good or ill the times

One lives in them, not living them

وبوصفك الأسفار في أسفارها

أحضرتها من فاته أن يحضرا

And your sweeping the edifices of glory

Was it less than their glory, or more?

كم من مغالق للعقول فتحتها

لله درك باحثا ومفكرا

Never will I forget the hand that clasped

My neck, and the scar of one loyal to recall

أنى على طيب الزمان وخبثه

ممن يعمر وده ما عمرا

I swore it, and the clan of Abu and my tribe,

Foremost to swear the greatest oath

وسجيتي رعي الذمام لمجمل

أأقل من إجماله أو أكثرا

I have given thanks as I could, and my need

Is, as long as I live, to return and give thanks

هيهات أن أنسى يدا لك طوقت

عنقي وشمية من وفى أن يذكرا

Welcome back! It was the luckiest shake

To confide in my Master the hidden loyalty

قلدتها وبنو أبي وعشيرتي

قدما فقلدنا الفخار الأكبرا

ولقد شكرت بما استطعت وحاجتي

ما دمت حيا أن أعود فأشكرا

عود السلامة كان أيمن نهزة

لأبث مولاي الولاء المضمرا
