    تحت الظلام هيام حائر

    This is a wandering boy

    Roaming confused in the dark

  2. أبلى الشقاء جديده

    وتقلمت منه الأظافر

    He has suffered much misery

    His nails are worn down

  3. فانظر إلى أسماله

    لم يبق منها ما يظاهر

    Look at his clothes

    Nothing decent is left

  4. هو لا يريد فراقها

    خوف الفوارس والهواجر

    He doesn't want to leave them

    Fearing the horsemen and migrants

  5. لكنها قد فارقته

    فراق معذور وعاذر

    But she has left him

    A justified and excused separation

  6. إني أعد ضلوعه

    من تحتها والليل عاكر

    I examine his ribs

    Underneath, in the dark night

  7. أبصرت هيكل عظمه

    فذكرت سكان المقابر

    I saw the structure of his bones

    And remembered the residents of graves

  8. فكأنما هو ميت

    أحياه عيسى بعد عاذر

    It's as if he were dead

    Revived by Jesus after death

  9. قد كاد يهدمه النسيم

    وكاد تذروه الأعاصر

    The breeze almost demolished him

    The storms almost pulverized him

  10. وتراه من فرط الهزال

    تكاد تثقبه المواطر

    You see him so emaciated

    The spears could pierce him

  11. عجبا أيفرسه الطوى

    في قلب حاضرة الحواضر

    How strange it is that hardship

    Afflicts him in the heart of the greatest city

  12. وتغوله البؤسى وطرف

    رعاية الأطفال ساهر

    And poverty assaults him

    While childcare is alert

  13. كم مثله تحت الدجى

    أسوان بادي الضر حائر

    Many like him in the darkness

    Wandering, obvious poverty

  14. خزيان يخرج في الظلام

    خروج خفاش المغاور

    Humiliated, going out in the night

    Like bats leaving their caves

  15. متلفعا جلبابه

    مترقبا معروف عابر

    Wrapped in his cloak

    Waiting for a passerby's charity

  16. يقذي برؤيته فلا

    تلوي عليه عين ناظر مطران

    His sight brings no comfort

    No eye looks upon him

  17. لو كان فذا إنما

    هو عاثر من ألف عاثر

    If he were well off

    He would be just one of many unlucky ones

  18. أنظر إلى اليسرى وكم

    تدع الميامن للمياسر

    Look to the left, and see how much

    Misfortune leaves to misfortune

  19. هذي فتاة حالها

    أدهى وأفطر للمرائر

    Is more painful and revealing of misery

    She is an unfortunate creature

  20. هي بضعة لشقية

    زلاء ما كانت بعاقر

    Having strayed from the righteous path

    In her gait and pallor

  21. في مشيها وشحوبها

    سيما لتربية العواهر

    The marks of a whore's upbringing

    Have mercy for your youth, O

  22. وارحمتا لصباك يا

    شبة الأماليد النواضر

    Resemblance of brilliant idols

    Thus she is cast into filth

  23. أكذاك يلقى في نجاسات

    الموطيء بالأزاهر

    Trampled like flowers

    When the cheapened ones have no honor

  24. فإذا رخصن ألا كرامة

    للصغيرات الطواهر

    The pure small ones have none

    Do you see her moves and glances

  25. أترى تثنيها ولفته

    كل سائرة وسائر

    Entice all passersby

    As if they are not upset

  26. هم يعجبون بلطف ما

    تبديه من غنج الفواجر

    By the like of her in sin

    Many of them mock

  27. وكأنهم لا يجزعون

    لمثل هذي في الكبائر

    Few, if good, would deter

    They do not feel she

  28. وكثيرهم مستهزيء

    وقليلهم إن بر زاجر

    Is among the greatest dangers

    The peoples of the East gave up

  29. لا يشعرون بأن تلك

    من الفوادح في الخسائر

    Achieving glories and prides

    They fell into the law of strife

  30. قعدت شعوب الشرق عن

    كسب المحامد والمفاخر

    Who falls, no doubt, loses

    Nations walk toward their goals

  31. فونت وفي شرع التناحر

    من ونى لا شك خاسر

    While the Nile's people lag behind

    How many youths have been lost

  32. تمشي الشعوب لقصدها

    قدما وشعب النيل آخر

    In Egypt and Syria, yet many remain

    But they were not granted

  33. كم في الكناية من فتى

    ندب وكم في الشام قادر

    Wisdom or courage for adventure

    One flies with fantasy

  34. لكنهم لم يرزقوا

    رأيا ولم يردوا المخاطر

    Another improvises jokes

    They did not understand life

  35. هذا يطير مع الخيال

    وذاك يرتجل النوادر

    And what life is without struggle

    Traversing the wilderness

  36. جهلوا الحياة وما الحياة

    لغير كداح مغامر

    And riding the ships' boards

    Consulting only determination

  37. يجتاب أجواز القفار

    ويمتطي متن الزواخر

    Regarding difficulties and means

    Seeking lasting deeds

  38. لا يستشير سوى العزيمة

    في الموارد والمصادر

    With the spirit of a gambler

    No determination falters

  39. يرمي وراء الباقيات

    بنفسه رمي المقامر

    With an early word in Egypt

    How much do we rely on tomorrow

  40. ما هد عزم القادرين

    بمصر إلا قول باكر

    While tomorrow makes today go

    The homelands are ruined

  41. كم ذا نحيل على غد

    وغد مصير اليوم صائر

    With no invention, economy, or wealth

    Leave what ignorance brings upon it

  42. خوت الديار فلا اختراع

    ولا اقتصاد ولا ذخائر

    And the disasters that ensue

    In economy is our life

  43. دع ما يجشمها الجمود

    وما يجر من الجرائر

    And survival, despite denial

    In it factories raise us

  44. في الاقتصاد حياتنا

    وبقاؤنا رغم المكابر

    Farms and shops

    O you who complain of a plight

  45. تربو به فينا المصانع

    والمزارع والمتاجر

    That brings dangerous results

    No - by Him who gave you

  46. يا من شكا حالا نعاني

    من عواقبها المخاطر

    Eloquence without denial

    You no longer have in yourself

  47. لا والذي ولاك ناصية

    البيان بلا مكابر

    Various anxieties and thoughts

    I have become as I was

  48. لم تعد ما في النفس من

    شتى الهواجس والخواطر

    Busy or awake at night

    I wish it were worries

  49. أضحي كما أمسي وبي

    شغل مغاد أو مساهر

    That risks would redeem with the soul

    But it is worries over

  50. يا ليته الهم الذي

    يفديه بالروح المخاطر

    What degrades the father from petty matters

    It can kill insects

  51. لكنه هم بما

    يردي الأبي من الصغائر

    That it does not fear at all

    And one lives without attempting

  52. قد تقتل الحشرات من

    هانت عليه فلا يحاذر

    Anything but what is easy

    Let us look for what will

  53. ويعيش من رام المنيعة

    دونها أجم القساور

    Lighten our load with scenes

    Go to the house built

  54. دعنا نفرج ما بنا

    شيئا بمختلف المناظر

    With the vine of elements

    Where dignity is greater for the poor

  55. سر بي الدار التي

    شيدت على كرم العناصر

    Than the lowest foundations

    We will take these two children there

  56. حيث المروءة بالفقير

    أبر من أدنى الأواصر

    God as our supporter

    Who do I or you, my brother, have

  57. ندفع إليها ذينك الطفلين

    والله المؤازر

    With treasuries full of gold

    We will establish for them manners

  58. من لي ومن لك يا أخي

    بخزائن الذهب العوامر

    After morals have circulated

    And pursue as much as generosity allows

  59. نأسو بهن خلائقا

    دارت عليهن الدوائر

    Of schools and platforms

    And say: O fate, judge

  60. ونشيد ما شاء السخاء

    من المعاهد والمنابر

    You will not again be unjust

    The women and leaders of Egypt

  61. ونقول يا دهر احتكم

    ما أنت بعد اليوم جائر

    And its consciences

    Returned youths

  62. أسراة مصر وقادة الألباب

    فيها والضمائر

    Whom corruption gambled with

    And threw in the garbage of villains

  63. ردوا عليها صبية

    لعب الفساد بهم يقامر

    Drunk and indecent

    Or scattered as goods and scattered them

  64. ألقى بهم في مطرح الأزلام

    سكير وفاجر

    Among the villains, a merchant

    What will they be tomorrow, and what

  65. أو فرقوا سلعا وفرقهم

    من الفساق تاجر

    Will their fate be among fates?

    From them, do you expect

  66. ما يصبحون غدا وكيف

    مصيرهم بين المصاير

    Good for Egypt, you discerning ones?

  67. من هؤلاء أيرتجي

    خير لمصر أولو البصائر
