    Not graceful as he struts haughtily

    إن يواقف لحظه باللحظ فرا

    Disappointed in ambition, dry of compassion

    If he pauses a moment, he recoils in fright

  5. قزمة هم نصبوه عاليا

    وجثوا بين يديه فاشمخرا

    They made an idol of the dwarf and bowed before him

    Prostrating between his hands, they sniffed and snorted

  6. ضخموه وأطالوا فيثه

    فترامى يملأ الآفاق فجرا

    They exaggerated him and lengthened his snake

    So it stretched filling the horizons with dawn

  7. منحوه من قواهم ما به

    صار طاغوتا عليهم أو أضرا

    They gave him of their powers so that

    He became a tyrant over them, harming or helping

  8. يكثر الإعصار هدما وردى

    إن يكاثره وما أوهاه صدر

    The more storms he unleashes havoc and devastation

    The more they multiply if he hoards them, his chest cannot contain

  9. مد في الآفاق ظلا جائلا

    هو ظل الموت أو أعدى وأضرى

    He spread in the horizons an ominous shadow

    It is the shadow of death or worse and more harmful

  10. إن رسا في موضع طم الأسى

    أو مضى فاظنن بسيف الله بترا

    If it alights in a place, it fills it with misery

    Or if it passes, think of God's sword cutting

  11. متلفا للزرع والضرع معا

    تاركا في إثره المعمور قفرا

    Destroying crops and livestock alike

    Leaving behind it the cultivated land a wasteland

  12. إنما يبطش ذو الأمر إذا

    لم يخف بطش الأولى ولوه أمرا

    A ruler only acts tyrannically when

    He does not fear the censure of the virtuous, even if fabricated

  13. ساس نيرون برفق قومه

    مستهلا عهده بالخير دثرا

    Nero gently ruled his people

    Beginning his reign with kindness and favor

  14. مستشيرا فيهم الحذر إلى

    أن بلا القوم فما راجع حذرا

    Consulting the cautious among them

    Until the people showed ingratitude, he did not return to caution

  15. ضاربا فيهم بكف مرة

    باسطا كفيه بالإحسان مرا

    Striking them with his angry palm

    Stretching out his hands in kindness again

  16. لان حتى وجد اللين بهم

    فجفا ثم عتا ثم اقمطرا

    Until he found them too soft

    So he hardened, then became rough and poured forth angrily

  17. لبس الحلم لهم حتى إذا

    آنس الحلم بهم منه تعرى

    He wore gentleness for them until when

    He felt from them no gentleness, he stripped it off

  18. وانتحى يرهقهم خترا فما

    عاقل في معقل يأمن خترا

    And set aside striving with them

    Except for his aides, granting them power and support

  19. بادئا تجربة البأس بمن

    هو من أهله في الأدنين إصرا

    The people corrupted themselves

    So the worthless became the elect

  20. لم يشفعهم لديه أنهم

    أعلق الناس به قربى وصهرا

    And the loyal ones were villainous

    And if a person was of good birth it was shameful

  21. مستبيحا بعدهم كل امرئ

    رابه سما وإحراقا ونحرا

    Every allegiance prospered

    While within in was rot eating away

  22. من موالين وندمان لقوا

    حتفهم حيث رجوا سيبا مبرا

    He continued intimidating until they feared

    His curse would strike them with fright

  23. وأولي علم على تأديبه

    أنفقوا من علمهم ما جل ذخرا

    With brows bent down until they saw

    The rebels openly oppose him

  24. حذروه شر ما يعقبه

    بغيه إن لم يخف لوما وشرا

    Their eyes searching the dark nights

    Seeking light but refusing to be tranquil

  25. فأباحوا خطلا أنفسهم

    وأولي الألباب أعيانا وغثرا

    A rogue party of fanatics

    Who long challenged authority and provoked the people to fury

  26. ظن في الجمهور أعداء لهم

    ملئت أكبادهم ضغنا ودغرا

    They killed Tirkin though he followed their cause

    Because he exceeded, they claimed, in exercising power

  27. كاظمين الغيظ خافين إلى

    أن يلوا في وجهه العدوان جهرا

    And they rewarded Caesar who

    Subjugated the world to them, by land and sea

  28. ناكسي الهامات حتى يشهدوا

    في لقاء القادرين الصعر صعرا

    Can it be true that proud Rome

    Preserved any glory while dust stained its face?

  29. من غيابات الدجى أبصارهم

    تطلب النور وتأبى أن تقرا

    That did not prevent Nero, nor did he see

    Anyone he feared, from fearing them

  30. فئة شكس غلاة طالما

    ناوأوا الحكم وهاجوا القوم نأرا

    Forget that and recall his killing of

    His mother, what a lesson in erased traces

  31. قتلوا تركين في دعواهم

    أنه يسرف في السلطان حكرا

    She wanted her brother instead of him

    And showed him how he forcibly took the kingdom

  32. وأثابوا بالردى قيصر إذ

    أخضع الدنيا لهم برا وبحرا

    She supported him as ruler until when

    Envy grew between them, a tree of bitterness

    من جلال العزة القعساء غبرا

    When he saw partnership in his rule

    As fetters and bonds, though she gave advice

  34. لم يخل ذلك نيرون ولم

    ير من يأمنها يأمن وترا

    He marshalled the stars against her to drown her

    But she escaped while the abyss cannot be fathomed

  35. عد عن ذلك واذكر قتله

    أمه كم عظة في طي ذكرى

    Then she lamented the deception but

    What is beyond the eye did not elude her

  36. هي أردت عمه من أجله

    وأرته كيف أخذ الملك قهرا

    So she chose from her soldiers a trusted

    Traitor to take her life by the sword, a betrayal

  37. ورعته حاكما حتى إذا

    شجرت بينهما العلاب شجرا

    By his excellence she sensed

    The wretch's trickery when the lightning flashed

  38. ورأى الشركة في سلطانه

    وهنا والنصح تقييدا وحجرا

    At that moment the enormity appeared

    Of the wrong she had done that today brought ruin

  39. سخر الفلك لها تغرقها

    فنجت والغور لا يدرك سبرا

    But fear of him did not have the effect

    To deter when fear intensifies

  40. فتباكى خدعة لكنها

    لم يفتها ما وراء العين عبرى

    So before she was modest, she hinted

    And though she paused, insistence overcame dignity

  41. فاصطفى من جندها مؤتمنا

    خائنا يأخذها بالسيف غدرا

    Then she said: Below you is the belly which

    Overturned the world, so gut it open

  42. ولفضل في نهاها استشعرت

    غيلة الوغد إذ البارق ذرا

    Thus the tyrant in his cowardice

    Began with outrage and persisted in betrayal

  43. لحظة فيها استبانت هول ما

    إثمها أمس عليها اليوم جرا

    He judged people one by one but when

    They joined together, he turned away from confrontation

  44. غير أن الخوف منها لم يقع

    موقعا يزري إذا ما الخوف أزرى

    Deeming them enemies, their livers

    Were filled with rancor and hatred

  45. فأشارت قبل لم تحتشم

    ولها وقفتها تيها وجبرا

    They suppressed their anger, hiding it

    Until they could openly oppose him

  46. ثم قالت دونك البطن الذي

    نكب الدنيا به فابقره بقرا

    With brows bent down until they witnessed

    The rebels openly take pride in their rebellion

  47. هكذا الباغي على جبن به

    بدأ البغي وبالفتك تضرى

    Their eyes in the darkness of night

    Sought light but refused to be still

  48. يختل الناس فرادى فإذا

    أجمعوا رأيا أدار الطعن نثرا

    A rogue band of hotheads

    Who long shunned authority and provoked fury in the people

  49. من يجده ممكنا أصمى ومن

    لم يجده ممكنا منى فأغرى

    They killed Tirkin though he followed their cause

    Because he exceeded, they claimed, in exercising power

  50. مستطيلا ما اشتهى في بغيه

    قائلا ما استطاع للرأفة قصرا

    And they rewarded Caesar who

    Subjugated the world to them, by land and by sea

  51. غال من غال بهم في شبهة

    بل كفى أن خال حتى اقتص وغرا

    With what was right, though to them

    It was wrongdoing deserving punishment

  52. وادعى الوزر وقاضى وقضى

    غيبة إن كان أو لم يك وزرا

    Every day he lavished on the army

    Generous gifts scattered in abundance

  53. وبنو روما سجود حوله

    ركع راضون ما ساء وسرا

    Every day he united the people in all

    That left no discontent remaining

  54. لو علوا كالمد في بحر طغى

    ثم ظنوه لعاد المد جزرا

    Every day he socialized wherever

    His people gathered morning and evening

  55. كلما كفكفه ناهي النهى

    عن أذاهم جرأوه فتجرى

    So they loved him for this and forgot

    The woes that befell them, abundant

  56. ليس بالتارك فيهم جهده

    لسوى أعوانه جاها وأزرا

    And he lived safely in every place

    And life after fear became pleasant

  57. أفسد القوم على أنفسهم

    فإذا الأخفر من كان الأبرا

    The secure are tempted, so let them say:

    Joy and jesting may be followed by sorrow

  58. وإذا الأوفى خثون وإذا

    حسن النكر قبيلا ساء نكرا

    Do you know who Servillius is? What

    The Romans called him, honouring his power?

    ما بهم حل من الأرزاء غزرا

    They shortened it, he would snort and chide

  66. وجرى في كل شوط آمنا

    وتملى العيش بعد الخوف طثرا

    If he moved his head they exaggerated

    His wisdom, swearing it was revelation

    He had become their guide though they were ignorant

    And long ago ignorance was a guide

    They magnified him, face and kiss, nations

    In their ignorance worshipped bulls and cats

    ذلك الطاغي على الرومان أجرى

    That is the wonder surpassing even

    Nero in creativity - can he match it?

    ذات يوم ضحكا منهم وسخرا

    We will see if he does not harm him

    What the people will do to harm him

    It claimed beauty so they said: By God

    You have made people lose their wits, scattering them

  80. طالما استعصى على ملجمه

    في الصبا ثم على الأيام قرا

    It claimed skill so they said: You return

    Intoxication to the awake, intoxicated again

  81. وبدا فيه وقار بعد أن

    كان خفاقا إذا حمل وقرا

    It went too far boasting: In portraying

    I have wonders, so they said: You give life to the dead, created anew

  82. ريض للطاغي وأوهى عزمه

    كبر السن فما يسطع كبرا

    It exaggerated: In theater I have

    No equal, so they said: You compose prose

  83. وغدا في ظن مولاه به

    دمثا لا خوف من أن يحذئرا

    Its entourage adorned it with a scheme

    More calamitous to the kingdom and harmful

  84. دانيا حاجبه من وقبه

    لينا جانبه عسرا ويسرا

    It intended a journey with its procession

    Its washings were hot springs washing it

    So buildings collapsed while cinders

    Were cast, and blood flowed like cinders

  149. مخرجا أشجى سماع للورى

    من لهيب يسدر الأبصار سدرا

    And people were lost, confused

    Plunged into horror that intensified horror

  150. مغربا حسنا وفي مذهبه

    أن خير الحسن ما يفعم شرا

    A plunge into the blaze except a few

    Who on the limbs over the fire made a passage

  151. فتقوم الزينة الكبرى بما

    ما به أصبح في التمثيل شهرا

    Around them meat was roasted in plenty

    But they, after fasting's effort, refused any feast

    رقدت أمتها وسنى وسكرى

    They staggered, their blood spilling

    As they moaned, their weeping like wine

  155. شعلة من كل صوب نهضت

    ومشت دفا وإحضارا وعبرا

    Ruby and amber flowed profusely

    With the surplus flowing, a ruby and a downpour

  156. زحفت رابية مضرمة

    تلتقيها في عناق الوهج أخرى

    Yesterday it was like a mirror

    Where a bird might sometimes make a scratch

  157. جمعت أقسام روما كلها

    في جحيم تصهر الأجسام صهرا

    In it metdescending mansions frowned

    While vines would smile a verdant smile

  158. فالمباني تتهاوى والجذى

    تترامى والدمى تنقض جمرا

    When breezes passed over them

    They would shatter them into bits scattered about

  159. والأناسي حيارى ذهل

    غامروا هولا وساء الهول غمرا

    What a vision it was as pearls

    Flowed in the rivers, a gushing river

  160. خوض في الوقد إلا نفرا

    تخذوا الأشلاء فوق الوقد جسرا

    You would see the waves in it swell

    Filling the water's expanse with magic

  161. والضواري انطلقت لا تأتلي

    ما التقت عضا وتمزيقا وكسرا

    Like swimming gazelles vying

    Racing ahead in rivalry and in ardour

  162. هجمت للفتك ثم انهزمت

    فزعات ساريات كل مسرى

    Frolicking, laughing without fear

    Innocent of any hint of doubt, pure

  163. كثر اللحم شواء حولها

    وتأبت بعد جهد الصوم فطرا

    Beauty sent along its shoulders

    From the braid of golden curls, hair

  164. تتهادى مهراقا دمها

    وبها ضعضعة النازف خمرا

    Every narcissus-bosomed doe moaned

    With a hand of amber and legs of amber

  165. دفق التبر ضياء ودما

    مستفيض اللج ياقوتا وتبرا

    It is the meadow's light and most brilliant gem

    It is the supple bough or most lucent waist

  166. كان بالأمس كمرآة صفت

    ربما كدرها الطائر نقرا

    Sometimes it appears and sometimes unseen

    Exceeding elegance when it sheds particles

  167. تلتقي فيها صروح عبست

    قاتمات وربى تبسم خضرا

    Where are those eyes? Did they travel

    To a garden while the water's chill grew warm?

  168. فإذا مرت نسيمات بها

    حطمتها قددا ربدا وغرا

    They became black, darkness engulfed them

    A current widening it, spurring and rippling

  169. حبذا عندئذ منظرها

    منظرا والتبر في الأنهار نهرا

    In swaths of tar its purple

    Still glimmers, from where it emanates

  170. إذ ترى الأمواج فيه أعرضت

    مالئات صفحات الماء سحرا

    Its clear complexion returned, refined

    And its smiling eyes became saffron

  171. كجوار سابحات خرد

    سابقات في تباريها وحسرى

    Its washings were hot springs washing it

    Gaining from adjoining heat more heat

  172. لاهيات مغربات ضحكا

    آمنات لمحات الريب طهرا

    O daughters of water, it is a loss

    That you are dark when blondness did not ugly you

  173. أرسل الحسن على أكتافها

    من ضفير الزبد المذهب شعرا

    That is what tyranny did, but could

    Purity meet it and not banish the turbid?

  174. كل غيداء رداح ناوحت

    بيد عبرا وبالأخمص عبرا

  175. هي نور الروض أو أزهى حلى

    وهي غصن الرند أو أرشق خصرا

  176. تارة تبدو وطورا لا ترى

    وتناهي الظرف إذ ترفض ذرا

  177. أين تلك العين هل حالت إلى

    جنة وارتد برد الماء سعرا

  178. أصبحت سود سعال ساقها

    سائق يوسعها حثا ونهرا

  179. في مسوح من قتار يجتلى

    أرجوان تحتها من حيث تفرى

  180. عاد صافي اللون منها رنقا

    وضحوك الوجه منها مكفهرا

  181. شرقت لماتها أصبغة

    ورنت أعينها النجلاء خزرا

  182. صار غسلينا حميما غسلها

    كاسبا من حر ما جاور حرا

  183. أي بنات الماء غبن بين

    أن ترى سودا وما أبهاك شقرا

  184. ذاك ما أحدثه البغي وهل

    أدرك الصفو فلم يردده كدرا

  185. قام سور حول روما ساطع

    ناشرا أعلامه كمتا وصفرا

  186. تحت جو ملئت أرجاؤه

    من تلظيها قتاما مسبكرا

  187. ينظر الغاشم في أقسامها

    حذقه رسما وموسيقى وشعرا
