عاد عهد المدير في اعين الناس

حميدا وأقصر اللوام

The era of the director has returned in the eyes of people

Praiseworthy and the shortest of blames

وتقضى بغي البغاة عليهم

وتقضى الاعنات والإرغام

And the aggression of the aggressors against them is fulfilled

And coercion and forcing are fulfilled

ساسهم ماهر بعدل فأنسى

ما جناه الجهال والظلام

Their wise governor made them forget

The ignorance and darkness they suffered

لا يرى جانف إليه سبيلا

ويراها الحريب والمستضام

No transgressor sees a way to him

While the jealous and covetous see it

جانب الرفق منه دان

ولكنج انب الحق عنده لا يرام

The side of gentleness is brought close to him

But the side of truth with him cannot be desired

ثبتت فيه خالدات المعاني

وانتفى ما أعارهن الرغام

In him are established the everlasting meanings

And the transient ones that dressed them are gone

فله والشخوص تطوى نشور

وله والسنون تفنى دوام

For him the mornings set while the years pass

He has a noble and kind spirit

نصف في الرجال سمح المحيا

لا يطول الانداد منه القوام

Equals do not remain with him for long

Except for open-handedness and charity from him

غير سبط اليدين إلا إذا ما

عني الفضل منه والإنعام

Good traits and nature are in every

Noble one, their mirror is attire

حسن السمت والسجية في كل

نبيل مرآتها الهندام

In his conscience, whoever examines it

Will see intelligence and daring

في اساريره لمن يجتليها

يتراءى الذكاء والإقدام

Reassured in himself and to it

Are tied the generous impulses

مطمئن بنفسه وإليها

رابط الجأش والصروف ضخام

He experienced life and its marvels

Surrounding it, words can encompass

ابتلك الحياة والعجب الماليء

أقسامها يحيط كلام

The rise of the country began, and in its

Sky of hope, a lightning bolt can be sensed

بدئت نهضة البلاد وفياه

من سماء الرجاء برق يشام

That memory of it is truly a ray

Darkness cannot cover in souls

لا وذكراه إنها لشعاع

ليس يغشاه في النفوس قتام

It is a memory by which glory

Settles in every nation and remains

هي ذكرى بمثلها العزة

القعساء في كل أمة تستدام

And to the extent nations renew it

They become strong and glorious leaders prosper

وعلى قدر ما تجددها الأقوام

تقوى وتمجد الاقفوام

Egypt honors today one who died

After a struggle and deserves respect

تكرم اليوم مصر من مات

في عقبى جهاد وحقه الإكرام

A day of pride you witnessed, it did not disappear

With its Nile or Pyramids

يوم فخر شهدتموه فما غاب

به نيلها ولا الأهرام

That departed one who alleviated

Its worries, beyond what remedies do

ذلك الراحل الذي شفه من

همها فوق ما يشف السقام

And spent changing conditions firmly

His era did not end and falconry remained

وقضى في تحول الحال ثبتا

لم يحل عهده لها والذمام

Look at his handsome appearance, in it

Is every ornament of adornment that is envied

طالعوا رسمه الجميل وفيه

كل زاه من الحلى يستام

It's as if he's come back to life

Filling the eye, his radiant face

فهو يرنو كأنه عاد حيا

يملأ العين وجهه البسام

What thanks from those who inherited

To cheer those who established

أي شكر من الذين تولوا

أن يبشوا الى الذين أقاموا

Who can represent my poetry, survive

As a monument that remains erected?

من لشعري بأ يمثله أبقى

على الدهر من مثال يقام

How it came to modernity in that

While he is the most learned scholar

كيف أضحى على الحداثة في ذلك

وهو المدرب العلام

He devised brilliance and intellect and showed

Virtue of that experienced management

يفتق الحيلة الذكاء ويبدي

فضل تلك الأدارة الاستخدام

With patience and resolve, plains flourish

And hail pours down

ومع الصبر والعزيمة تخضر

الموامي ويستدر الجهام

That council disappeared after the finance minister

And its unity disbanded

زال ذاك الديوان بعد وفاء الدين

وانفض شمله المتلام

So Maher remained in it

Under water like a thick, leafy tree

فخلا ماهر وما زال فيه

تحت ماء العود النضير ضرام

He was not accustomed to stability and with suppression

He echoed and rusted the bolts

كان لا يألف القرار وبالإغماد

يصدى ويصدأ الصمصام

So he took guidance to walk properly

With much thinking and charity

فاستمد الهدى ليأتنف السير

وطال التفكير والإنعام

Thus he shared the love of the country and was concerned

His caring heart that pondered fate

فهواه هوى البلاد ومن هام

رأى الغيب قلبه المستهام

The true lover is guided by the whim

Of his love, not led by the bridle

والمحب الابر من قاده وحي

هواه ولم يقده الزمام

A good association emerged in zeal

To organize the elite of the country

نشأت في الحمى نقابة خير

لسراة البلاد فيها انتظام

It gives self and valuables charitably

Purely and for the sake of the goal - excellent is the goal

تبذل النفس والنفيس احتسابا

خالصا واملرام نعم المرام

It intended only the masses who suffer

While others enjoy favor

ما عناها إلا السواد الذي يشقى

ومن حظ غيره الإنعام

The masses who stand on earth

While their peers are favors

ألسواد الذي يقوم على الأرض

واقرانه هي الانعام

It seeks advice and guidance for them

And protects their weak from oppression

تتوخى له النصيحة والرشد

وتحمي ضعافه أن يضاموا

It gathered them and a generous

Leader came forth, honored ones

جمعت شملها وقدم فيالجمع

كريم مقدموه كرام

Maher took on the burden skillfully

Managing every difficult affair

حمل العبء ماهر وهو من يحسن

تدبير كل أمر يسام

If light is wanted he's a flame

If wanted erased he's a sword

إن أريد الضياء فهو شهاب

أو أريد المضاء فهو حسام

He showed us cooperation and the two pillars

In it are integrity and harmony

فأرانا كيف التعاون والركنان

فيه نزاهة ووئام

And showed us candor and honesty

And perfection and decisiveness

وارانا كيف الصراحة والصدق

وكيف الإتقان والإحكام

And showed us what inhabits patience

And faith over surrender

وأرانا ما يعمر الصبر

والإيمان مما يدك الاستسلام

And showed that leadership is a kind

Of brotherhood, no boredom or rift

وأرانا أن الزعامة ضرب

من إخاء لا سائم ومسام

And that groups are siblings, pride

For patrons that they are servants

والجماعات إخوة وفخار

للمولين أنهم خدام

Then came the day Egypt called him

For a grave matter, not light

ثم كان اليوم الذي ندبته

مصر فيه والأمر أمر جسام

A day between wishes and death

Was most fitting for hesitation

رب يوم بين المنى والمنايا

كان أحجى في مثله الإحجام

A position - the ministers objected

While disasters amassed debris

موقف عدت الوزارة وزرا

فيه والمنذرات سحب ركام

But condemnation can miss the target

To where it should not be placed

غير أن التأثيم قد يخطيء المرمى

إلى حيث لا يكون أُام

And in trials, some correction

In the outcomes is productive

ومن النقض فيالتجارب ما يصلحه

في العواقب الإقبرام

So Maher spoke up for an opinion

Though the sublime evaded it

فانبرى ماهر ينافح عن رأي

وإن جل دونه ما يسام

With comrades who strove, so traits

Came to them time did not bring

في رفاق جدوا فجادت عليههم

بالذي لم تجد به الأيام

Others paved the final stretch

And at the end was intervention

مهد الشوط آخرون ومنهم

كان في آخر المدى الاقتحام

Egypt's ancient king returned renewed

His supremacy and order intact

ملك مصر القديم عاد جديدا

مستتبا جلاله والنظام

The constitution's rebuilding, strong

Steadfast, its pillars and supports

وبناء الدستور رد وطيدا

مستقرا عماده والدعام

Leave aside this beginning, in it

Was critique and completion

دع سوى هذه البداءة مما

كان فيه التعقيب والإتمام

With openings each day

Regaining rights lost for years

بفتوح ترد في كل يوم

من حقوق ما ضيعت أعوام

Foreigners' outreach was curtailed

And laws returned to locals

رجعت بسطة الاجانب قبضا

واستقرت في أهلها الاحكام

And let time prove what it proves

For emergencies, belts are tightened

ولريب الزمان يعتد ما يعتده

للطوارئ الاحزام

Moderation protects from missteps

Major ones steps falter in

إنما القصد عاصم من مزلات

كبار تزلها الاقدام

Tell those who belittle caution against dangers

That only wreckage protects

قل لمن يزدري الحطا من الاخطار

ما لا يصون إلا الحطام

How can one expect safety with deficits

For a man from his disgrace and defense?

كيف يرجى مع الخصاص أمن

لامرئ من هوانها واعتصام

Moderation means the body's health - does it stay safe

Except with precaution, bodies?

ومن القصد صحة الجسم هل تسلم

إلا بالحيطة الأجسام

For life to continue and money too

Both during hard times must align

إن بقيا الفتى على الجسم والبقيا

على المال في الخلال تؤام

That was the prudent situation

Mustafa followed - the best leader

تلك حال رشيدة كان يؤتم

بها مصطفى ونعم الامام

His good hands and great efforts

Kept it from any blemish

نزهتها عن كل ذام أياديه

الحميدات والمساعي الجسام

Ask him and you'll know how to sever

Causes of discord and join family ties

سل به تدر كيف تقطع أسباب

التعادي وتوصل الأرحام

And help sheltered widows

And aid the poor and orphans

وتعان المحصنات الأيامى

وتعال العفاة والأيتام

If an asker is disappointed, he never was

In his selfless care, hopeful and obscure

إن يخب سائل فما خاب يوما

في ذراه المؤمل المعتام

Shall I show you what he spent

His time on when worries ceased?

أأريكم ما كان ينفق فيه

وقته حين يستطاب الجمام

That is wisdom taken from us - only

The greatest parts were recorded

تلك آيات من فقدنا وما دونت

منها هو اللباب العظام

From the traits of a soul worthy

That its essence be unveiled

صدرت عن خلال نفس جدير

كنهها أن يماط عنه اللثام

A free soul whose manners align

In it air and sandstorms are believed

نفس حر أخلاقه نسق تصدق

فيها الهواء والوغام

Not prophetic that he is the peaceful one

He was great in himself, not made vain

ما بها نبوة على أنه الوادع

آنا وآنا الضرغام

By any glorification

In traits and manners, only accord is seen

كان في نفسه عظيما فما يزهيه

من حيث جاءه الإعظام

At every turn voices listen to him

And for his joking, smiles

لا يرى منه في السجايا

وفي الآداب إلا توافق وانسجام

One amusing remark follows another jousting

An orator who heals worries with his words

كلما زيد رتبة أو وساما

لم تفرحة رتبة أو وسام

And awakens spirits to hear

Tones as if they are roars

إن سيف الجهاد وهو عتاد

لا يجلي وقد يحلي الكهام

And melodies as if songs

Each life comes to an end, but

حكم العقل في تصرفه فهو

الملاك المتين وهو القوام

You shepherd hearts - this end

What arrow have you thrown into the chest of an adorer

وتجافى السير المريب فلم يلحق

بأطراف ظله الاتهام

By you, arrows would be deflected

A being of virtue and chastity, untouched

يتقي الحادثات من قبل

أن تحدث والظن بعضه إلهام

By harm or pain from others

Of vicious gossip, as long as in the heart

بين تثبت الحقائق فيه

ناصعات وتنتفي الوهام

Is fervor and in loyalty, a protector

Other than this resolute intention and what actualized it

من يكون الجليس يصغي إليه

سامعوه وللووه ابتسام

Each state but you in it is flawed

May God guard you and abundant

طرفة من تنادر مستحب

إثر أخرى والبادرات سجام

Is reward, so go in peace Mustafa

These are books he returns to

من خطيب يشفى أوام بما يلقي

ويذكو إلى السماع أوام

The finest fruits of pens

Where are in them the cup-bearer and aromatic wine

نبرات كأنها زأرات

ولحون كأنها أنغام

Sweet, and where are in them cups?

Life reveals its joys in them

كل عمر إلى ختام ولكن

راع فيك القلوب هذا الختام

Sorrows and pains are consoled

And secrets shared cheer

أي سهم رميت في صدر ولهى

بك كان ترد عنها السهام

The musings of thoughts and dreams

But it's as if studying for enrichment

ذات صون وعصمة لم ينلها

فيحماك الأذى ولا الإيلام

Is help, not complete

And seeking completeness he traveled the earth

من رواعي الذمام ما دام في القلب

ذماء وفي الوفاء ذمام

That refined determined one

He circled under every sky

غير هذي النوى وما أعقبته

كل حال عداك فيها الذام

Returning each year after a year

Not a stranger in any nation or language

جارك الله والثواب جليل

فامض يا مصطفى عليك السلام

Without total fluency

Benefiting from each art form

هذه كتبه يعود إليها

وهي أزكى ما تثمر الأقلام

And Egypt benefits from his gains

Oh you who left with the greatest name

أين منها النديم والخمر العابق

طيبا وأين منها المدام

To the two brilliant eras of mankind

Who can be the literatus after you, no strangeness

يكشف العيش عن مباهجه فيها

وتسلى الشجون والآلآم

In his words or ambiguity

وتناجى بما يسر ويسجي

يقظات الأفكار والاحلام

غير كأن المطالعات على التثقيف

عون وليس فيها التمام

وابتغاء التمام كان يجوب الأرض

ذاك المهذب الهمام

طاف ما طاف تحت كل سماء

عائدا كلما تلا العام عام

ليس في أمة غريبا وما من

لغة ما له بها إلمام

يستفيد الطريف من كل فن

ولمصر مما جناه اغتنام

أيها النازح الذي خلف اسما

أكبرته فيا لمشرقين الأنام

من يكون الأديب بعدك لا إغراب

في قوله ولا إعجام
