قَدْ تَوَلَّى رِفَاقُنَا وَبَقِينَا
يَعْلَمُ الله بَعْدَهُمْ مَا لَقِينَا
Our friends have parted and we remained
God knows after them what we encountered
هَلْ مِنْ الصَّابِ فِي كُؤُوسِكَ سُؤْرٌ
قَدْ سُقِينَا يَا دَهْرُ حَتَّى رَوِينَا
Is there still drink in your cups, my friend?
We've drunk our fill, oh fate, and were quenched
أَوَدَاعٌ يَتْلُو وَدَاعاً وَتَأْبِي
نٌ عَلَى الإِثْرِ مُعْقِبٌ تَأْبِينَا
Farewells come and go, reluctant though
Sorrows chase them, unwilling to relent
أَيُّهَا الشَّاعِرُ الَّذِي كَانَ حِيناً
يَتَغَنَّى وَكَانَ يَنْحَبُ حِيناً
Oh poet, who once sang joyfully
And once wept woefully, in times gone
حَطِّمِ العُودَ إِنْ كَرَّ اللَّيَالِي
لَمْ يُغَادِرْ فِي العُودِ إِلاَّ الأَنِينَا
Break the lute if nights grew long
Naught remains in it but sighing laments
أَنْ يُلِمَّ الرَّدَى بِمَيَّ غَدَاةً
يَا لَقَوْمِي بِأَيِّ خَطْبٍ دُهِينَا
That adversity assailed in the morrow’s dew
Oh my people, what misfortunes made us stoop!
طَالِعُ السَّعْدِ هَلْ تَحَوَّلَ نَوْءاً
يَبْعَثُ الرِّيحَ وَالسَّحَابَ الهَتُونَا
Did the auspicious stars turn inauspicious?
Stirring winds and listless clouds?
فَإِذَا مَا أَقَرَّ أَمسٍ عُيُوناً
قَرَّحَ اليَوْمَ بِالدُّمُوعِ العُيُونَا
When yesterday's eyes close satisfied
Today's weep, tears streaming again
نِعْمَةٌ مَا سَخَا بِهَا الدَّهْرُ حَتَّى
آبَ كَالعَهْدِ سَالِباً وَضَنِينَا
A blessing unstinting, until time
Took away, unfulfilled, leaving us yearning
أَيُّ هَذَا الثَّرَى ظَفِرْتَ بِحُسْنٍ
كَانَ بِالطُّهْرِ وَالعَفَافِ مَصُونَا
What is this soil you held with beauty?
Chaste and virtuous it remained preserved
لَهْفَ نَفْسِي عَلَى حِجىً عَبْقَرِيٍّ
كَانَ ذُخْراً فَصَارَ كَنْزاً دَفِينَا
My soul yearns for an absent sage
Once a treasure, now wealth buried deep
إِيهِ يَا مَي أَسْرَفَ اليُتْمُ تَبْرِي
حاً بِرُوحٍ كَانَ الوَفِيَّ الحَنُونَا
Alas, orphanhood took to excess, robbing
A spirit once compassionate and affectionate
فَقْدُكِ الوَالِدَيْنِ حَالاً فَحَالاً
جَعَلَ البِيضَ مِنَ لَيَالِيكِ جُونَا
Losing your parents, time after time
Made your nights all gloom and darkness
وَرَمَى أَصْغَرَيْكَ رَامِي الكَبِيرَيْ
نِ فَذَاقَا قَبْلَ المَنُونِ المَنُونَا
And threw your little one against the elder
Both tasted death before death met them
أَقْفَرَ البَيْتُ أَيْنَ نَادِيكِ يَا مَيُّ
إِلَيْهِ الوُفُودُ يَخْتَلِفُونَا
The home lies empty, where is your caller, My?
Caravans came constantly to visit
صَفْوَةُ المَشْرِقَيْنِ نُبْلاً وَفَضْلاً
فِي ذَرَاكَ الرَّحِيبِ يَعْتَمِرُونَا
The elite of East and West in nobility and merit
To your vast sanctum performing pilgrimage
فَتُسَاقُ البُحُوثُ فِيهِ ضَرُوياً
وَيُدَارُ الحَدِيثُ فِيهِ شَجُونَا
Discussions held, sincere dialogues
Hearts attracted, finding all they sought
وَتُصِيبُ القُلُوبُ وَهِيَ غِرَاثُ
مِنْ ثِمَارِ العُقُولِ مَا يَشْتَهِينَا
Of fruits of minds, aspirations fulfilled
Of writers you led the precedence
فِي مَجَالِ الأَقْلامِ آلَ إِلَيْكِ السَّ
بْقُ فِي المُنْشِئَاتِ وَالمُنْشِئينَا
In prose and verse compositions, guiding
Where is that eloquence to take all minds
أَيْنَ ذَاكَ البَيَانُ يَأْخُذُ بِالأَلْبَ
ابِ فِيمَا تَجْلِينَ أَوْ تَصِفِينَا
In any forum you address, making hearts incline?
The East mourned its eloquent orator
فِي لُغَاتٍ شَتَّى وَفِي لُغَةِ الضَّ
ادِ تُجِندِينَ صَوْغَ مَا تَكْتُبِينَا
Her words were never of the common kind
Most articulate in pure Arabic she expressed
أَدَبٌ قَدْ جَمَعْتَ فِيهِ عُلُوماً
يُخْطِيءُ الظَّنُّ عَدَّهَا وَفُنُونَا
After fulfilling speech's clearest signs
She delighted, refined, and urged
وَتَصَرَّفْتِ فِيهِ نَظْماً وَنَثْراً
بِاقْتِدَارٍ تَصَرُّفَ المُلْهَمِينَا
Goodness, worldly and of faith combined
With talk that combined the two delights
تَبْتَغِينَ الصَّلاحَ مِنْ كُلِّ وَجْهٍ
وَتُعَانِينَ شِقْوَةَ المُصْلِحِينَا
However one may prefer or intertwine
She gauged it phrase and glance and faith
وَحْيُ قَلْبٍ يَفِيضُ بِالحُبِّ لِلخَيْ
رِ وَيَهْدِي إِلَيْهِ مَنْ يَهْتَدُونَا
As the beloved willed it to entwine
That was your concern in life and melody
وَيَوَدُّ الحَيَاةَ عِزّاً وَجُهْداً
لا يَوَدُّ الحَيَاةَ خَسْفاً وَلِينَا
While you played, never to forget your goal
You sought only the lofty, shunning
فَهْوَ آناً يَبُثُ بَثّاً رَفِيقاً
يَمْلأُ النَّفْسَ رَحْمَةً وَحَنِينَا
Caprices, avoiding tribulations whole
You made learning your work and its yield you reaped
وَهْوَ آناً يَثُورُ ثَوْرَةَ حُزّ
عَاصِفاً عَصْفَةً تَدُكُّ الحُصُونَا
Delighting the cultivated and refined
Peace be upon you, remembering you we live
يَنْصُرُ الْعَقْلَ يَكْشِفُ الجَهْلَ يُوحِي ال
عَدْلَ يرْعَى الضَّعِيفَ وَالمِسْكِينَا
And despite the distance, you are near, brought to mind
The women's union in Egypt has a credit
أَيْنَ ذَاكَ الصَّوْتُ الَّذِي يَمْلِكً الأَسْ
مَاعَ فِي كُلِّ مَوْقِفٍ تَقِفِينَا
Larger than people witness or define
Today, in loyalty, it sets an example
فُجِعَ الشَّرْقُ فِي خَطِيبَتِهِ الفُصْحَ
ى وَمَا كَانَ خَطْبُهَا لِيَهُونَا
With praise, fulfilling what we owed in kind
It preserves My's rights, and for the nation
أَبْلَغُ النَّاطِقَاتِ بِالضَّادِ عَبَّتْ
بَعْدَ أَنْ أَدَّتِ البَلاغَ المُبِينَا
Pays dues that repay its debts in full
O Guidance, you are mercy and guidance for the East
أَطْرَبَتْهُ وَهَذَّبَتْهُ وَحَثَّتْ
هُ عَلَى الصَّالِحَاتِ دُنْيَا وَدِينَا
So immortalize it, and span the years confined
بِكَلاَمٍ حَوَى الطَّرِيفَيْنِ تَنْغِ
يماً كَمَا يُسْتَحَبُّ أَوْ تَلوِينَا
قَدَّرَتْهُ لَفْظاً وَلَحْظاً وَإِيمَا
ءً بِمَا وَدَّتِ المُنَى أَنْ يَكُونَا
ذَاكَ فِي العَيْشِ مَا شُغِلْتَ بِهِ وَال
غِيدُ تَلْهُو وَأَنْتَ لا تَلْهِينَا
لَمْ تَرُومِي إِلاَّ الجَلِيلَ وَجَانَبْ
تِ الأَبَاطِيلَ وَاتَّقَيْتِ الفُتُونَا
وَجَعَلْتِ التَّحْصِيلَ دَأْباً وَآتَيْ
تِ جَنَاهُ فَطَابَ لِلمُجَتَبِينَا
فَعَلَيْكِ السَّلامُ ذِكْرَاكِ تَحْيَى
وَبِرَغْمِ البِعَادِ لا تَبْعِدِينَا
لاتِّحَادِ النِّسَاءِ فِي مِصْرَ فَضْلٌ
أَكْبَرَ النَّاسُ مِنْهُ مَا يَشْهَدُونَا
قَدَّمَ اليَوْمَ فِي الوَفَاءِ مِثَالاً
مِنْ مَسَاعِيهِ بِالثَّنَاءِ قَمِينَا
فَهْوَ يَرْعَى بِهِ لِمِيَّ حُقُوقاً
وَهْوَ يَقْضِي عَنْ البِلادِ دُيُونَا
يَا هُدَى أَنْتِ رَحْمَةٌ وَهُدىً لِلشَّ
رْقِ فَأَبْقَى لَهُ وَأَفْنِي السِّنِينَا
