1. مَا لِجرْحٍ جُرِحْتُهُ مِنْ ضِمَاد

    نَفَذَ السَّهمُ فِي صَمِيمِ فؤادِي

    What cure for a wound inflicted on me

    Where the arrow pierced to the core of my heart

  2. رَحْمَةً يَا زِمَانُ أَيْنَ أَمِيرِي

    وَنَصِيرِي بَعْدَ الحَبِيبِ الغَادِي

    Have mercy, O Time! Where is my prince

    And my supporter after the beloved’s departure

  3. يَا لَيَالِيَّ يَوْمَ أَمْسَى عَلِيلاً

    قَدْ كَسَوْتُنَّ بِالسَّوَادِ سَوَادِي

    O nights of the day I fell ill

    I shrouded you in the blackness of my gloom

  4. بَاتَ مِنْ دَائِهِ حَلِيفَ سُهَادٍ

    وَأَنَا مِنْ جَوىً حَلِيفُ سُهَادِ

    My illness made me a companion of wakefulness

    While yearning made me a companion of insomnia

  5. ثُمَّ كَانَ الفِرَاقُ مَا مِنْ رَجَاءٍ

    بَعْدَهُ لِلِّقَاءٍ قَبْلَ المَعادِ

    Then came the separation, after which there was no

    Hope of reunion before the final day

  6. أَيْنَ أُنْسِي إِذا افْتَقَدْتُ أَنِيساً

    آه مِنْ وَحْشَتِي وَطُولِ افْتِقَادي

    Where can I find solace when I miss a companion?

    Alas! My loneliness and prolonged deprivation

  7. جَاءَ شَجْوِي مِنْ حَيْثُ كَانَ سُرُورِي

    كَيْفَ بُدِّلْتُ قُرْبَهُ بِبِعَادِ

    My lament came from where my joy had been

    How I exchanged nearness for distance

  8. إِنْ تَقَضَّى طِيبُ الحَيَاةِ فَمَا مَعْ

    نَى حَيَاةٍ قَدْ أَقْفَرَتْ مِنْ مُرَادِ

    If the sweetness of life passes, what is the purpose

    Of a life emptied of all I desire?

  9. كَيْفَ أَرْثِيهِ وَالحِجَى أَطْفَاتْهُ

    غَشْيَةُ الحُزْنِ وَالحَشَى فِي اتِّقادِ

    How can I eulogize him when sorrow has silenced me

    As sadness and grief blaze within me?

  10. لَوْ تُحَوَّلُ الدُّمُوعُ شِعْراً لَمَا جَا

    رَى قَوَافِيَّ فِيهِ صَوْبُ العِهَادِ

    Were tears to turn into hair, the elegies about him

    Would not flow towards consummate mastery

  11. يَا بَقَايَا مِنْ هِمَّة تَتَلاشَى

    لاَ تَضَنِّي عَلَيَّ بِالإِسْعَادِ

    O fading remnants of my fervor

    Do not be stingy in making me happy

  12. كَانَ بِالجَاهِ وَالعُلَى جُورْجُ لُطْفُ اللَّ

    هِ فَرْداً مِنْ أَبْرَزِ الأَفْرَادِ

    George was, by God's grace, unmatched among individuals

    In glory and nobility

  13. كَانَ عَيْنَ الأَعْيَانِ فِي كُلِّ حَفْلٍ

    كَانَ زَيْنَ الفِتْيَانِ فِي كُلِّ نَادِ

    He was the best of the best at every gathering

    The most splendid of youths in every club

  14. عَالِيَ الرَّأْسِ عَالِيَ النَّفسِ نَهَّا

    ضاً قَوِيَّ الأّخْلاَقِ وَالأَعْضَادِ

    Tall of stature, magnanimous, refined in morals and physique

    Decisive in resolve, unwavering in determination

  15. وَافِرَ الحَزْمِ وَافِيَ العَزْمِ فِي إِصْ

    دَارِهِ حِكْمَةٌ وَفِي الإِيرَادِ

    He sought lofty goals, never deterred

    By the disdain of envious detractors

  16. يَطْلُبُ المَطْلَبَ البَعِيدَ وَلاَ يَثْ

    نِيهِ عَنْهُ سَفَاسِفُ الحُسَّادِ

    You would only see him cheerful, never hear

    Words hinting of arrogance

  17. لاَ تَرَاهُ إِلاَّ بَشُوشاً وَلاَ تَسْ

    مَعُ قَوْلاً يَنِمُّ عَنْ أَحْفَادِ

    And for the bounty he enjoyed

    His soul was not content without striving

  18. وَعَلَى النِّعمَة الَّتِي هُوَ فِيهَا

    لَمْ تَطِبْ نَفْسُهُ بِغَيْرِ الجِهَادِ

    The freeborn should not fail to be ambitious

    Lest time rust unsharpened blades

  19. مَا عَلَى الحُرِّ أَنْ يَكُونَ طَمُوحاً

    تَصْدَأُ البَاتِرَاتُ فِي الأَغْمَادِ

    Every matter he took on

    Its success was destined by his appointment

  20. كُلُّ شَأْنٍ مِمَّا تَوَلاَّهُ كَا

    نَ الفَوْزُ مِنْ غِبِّه عَلَى مِيعَادِ

    No pampered lordling rivaled his distinction

    Nor abundance of pretenders his worth

  21. لَمْ يُنَافِسْهُ فِي الوَجَاهَةِ مَمْدُو

    دُ طِرَافٍ وَلاَ كَثِيرُ رَمادِ

    In defending the helpless and the ways of righteousness

    Were ceaseless efforts and open hands

  22. فِي سَبِيلِ الحِمَى وَفِي سُبُلِ البِرِّ

    مَسَاعٍ لاَ تَنْقَضِي وَأَيَادِ

    His manor was the meeting place of great men

    Of Arabs, foreigners, and noblemen

  23. صَرْحُهُ مُلْتَقَى الأَعَاظِمِ مِنْ عُرْ

    بٍ وَعُجْمٍ وَكَعْبَةُ القُصَّادِ

    What household among the abodes of munificence

    Rivals him in glorious deeds?

  24. هَلْ يُضَاهِيهِ بِالمَفَاخِرِ بَيْتٌ

    فِي بُيُوتِ السَّرَاة وَالأَجْوَادِ

    He was the mirror of his people, and they

    Were unmatched in excellence and merit

  25. هُوَ مِرْآةُ أَهْلِهِ وَهُمُ بِالنُّ

    بْلِ وَالفَضلِ فَاقِدُو الأَنْدَادِ

    And by the esteem rightfully earned

    Among us through reverence and affection

  26. وَبِحَقٍّ مَا أَحْرَزُوهُ جَمِيعاً

    بَيْنَنَا مِنْ تَجِلَّةٍ وَوِدَادِ

    The engagement of this pillar of strength was an inclusive benefit

    May God magnify its reward for the country

  27. خَطْبُ هَذَا الهُمَامِ خَطْبٌ عَمِيمٌ

    عَظَّم اللهُ فِيه أَجْرِ البِلادِ

    May God magnify the reward of honorable men

    Whose loss afflicts his splendid family

  28. عَظَّم اللهُ فِيه أَجْرَ كِرَامٍ

    رُزِئُوهُ مِنْ آلِهِ الأَمْجَادِ

    They are his consolation, and none but they

    Are solace for the anguish of wounded hearts

  29. هُمْ عَزَاءٌ وَمَا سِوَاهُم عَزَاءٌ

    عَنْهُ يَأْسُو جَريحَةَ الأَكْبَادِ
