بدت تختال في حُلل الجمالِ

وجادت بالزيارة والوصال

She appeared, swaying in the garments of beauty,

Generous with visitation and union.

تميس فلا يعادلها قضيب

وإن ترنو تداعب بالنصال

A gazelle, nothing compares to her grace,

And if she glances, she teases with blades.

بمبسمها لَعَمرُ أبيك درٌّ

وفي أعماقها نبع الزلالِ

By her smile, I swear, a pearl,

And in her depths a spring of purity.

وخصر يستبيك إذا تولت

كغصن البان في كُثب الرمالِ

A waist that entices when she turns,

Like a supple bough among the dunes.

تبدّت كالقضيب على كثيب

وجلّت كالمنيرة في الليالي

She emerged like a gazelle over a gazelle,

And shone like a lamp in the nights.

فقمت أداعب الوجنات منها

وألثم ثغرها حكي اللآلي

So I began caressing her cheeks,

And kissing her mouth telling secrets.

وأهصرُ غصنها ضماً ولمّاً

وألهو باليمين وبالشمال

And I shook her branch, embracing and gentle,

And played with right and left.

ومن خلق العفاف لنا رقيب

بطهر الحب في حسن الخلال

And whoever created modesty for us a guardian

Through the purity of love and beauty of grace.

وقد غاب الرقيب وطاب أنسي

وطير الحب يصدح بامتثال

The guardian was absent and my company was good,

And the bird of love trilled obediently.

تقول أراك تظهر لي اشتياقاً

وتفعل كالمودع للرحال

She said, I see you show longing,

And act like one bidding farewell to travels.

فقلت لها رويدك إن قلبي

وحبي لم يكن يوماً بسالي

So I said, gentle, my heart

And love were never indifferent.

ولكني عزمت وفيّ عزمٌ

ليهزأ بالأسنّة والعوالي

But I am determined, and determined resolve

To mock the gossipers and slanderers.

سئمت من المقام وكل شيء

إذا ما دام يُسأم لا محال

I'm tired of staying, and everything

When prolonged becomes tedious, no doubt.

سأضرب في الحياة بسهم جدي

ونحظى بالمسرة والوصال

I will embark on life with a new arrow,

And we will enjoy pleasure and union.

وأرجع إن يشا الباري قريباً

إليك لنبتني صرح المعالي

And I will return, if God wills, soon

To you, to build the edifice of glory.

فرقرق لؤلؤ في مقلتيها

وصاحت آه من مرّ الليالي

A pearl quivered in her eyelid,

And she cried "Ah!" from the bitterness of nights.

أتترك يا حبيب الروح قلباً

يكاد يذوب من شوقٍ لحالي

Will you leave, my soul's beloved, a heart

That is melting with yearning for my state?

وتسلوني وأنت نعيم روحي

ولا ترعى المودة أو تبالي

And console me, when you are the bliss of my soul,

And disregard affection or care?

ليحفظ الإله بكل أرض

ويرزقك السلامة في الكمال

May God protect you wherever you are,

And grant you safety and perfection.

وجمنا لم نحر قولاً ولكن

نُهير الدمع فاض على التوالي

We gathered, not speaking a word, but

Our streaming tears overflowed continually.

ولاح الصبح من تحت الثريا

كما لاح المشيب بعين قال

Dawn gleamed beneath the Pleiades,

As gray hair gleamed in the eye of the beholder.

فيالله كم ذابت قلوب

وكم سالت دموع كاللآلي

Oh God, how many hearts have melted,

And how many tears flowed like pearls!

ليوم السبت من شوال قمنا

لأربع قد خلون وعشر تال

On Saturday of Shawwal we rose,

Twenty four days had passed.

ركبنا اللجّة الزرقاء نحدو

وفوضنا الأمور لذي الجلال

We boarded the blue ship sailing

And entrusted affairs to the Almighty.

وسار الفلك يمخر في عباب

تقاذفه الجنوب مع الشمال

The vessel lurched into the deep,

Tossed by south and north winds.

ولاح لنا الكويت على مغيب

وقد جزنا به وقت الزوال

Kuwait appeared to us at sunset,

When we arrived there at midday.

ومن حالول سرنا بانتباه

ومجرانا السماك بكل حال

From Halul we proceeded carefully,

Following the coastline all the while.

وهبت عند نصف الليل ريح

وهبّ الجمع يمسك بالحبال

At midnight a wind blew,

And the group held fast to the ropes.

يغطي الموج منّا كل شيء

ويظهر بالعناد ولا يبالي

The waves covered everything of us,

Showing defiance, heedless.

وصوت النوخذا يأتي إلينا

كما الوديان تهدر في الجبال

The captain’s voice reached us

Like wadis roaring in the mountains.

وعصف الموج شتتنا فبتنا

كريش لا يقر على مجال

The thrashing waves scattered us, so we were

Like feathers unable to alight.

بلاد قد زها العمران فيها

وشيدت بالرقيّ وبالجمال

Lands cultivated there,

Built up in advancement and beauty.

ترى بيض الأوانس سارحات

يشابهن الغصون على رمال

You see white beauties wandering,

Resembling boughs over the sands.

نشرن غدائراً وسَفرنَ حوراً

وكشفن الوجوه عن اللآلي

They let down their tresses and unveiled allure,

And revealed their faces and glances.
