ودعت أغلى صديق كنت تعرفه

قاني الوفاء بديع الصنع جذلان

You bid farewell to the dearest friend you knew,

Of exquisite loyalty and generous nature.

ينبيك بالأرض والدنيا وما حوتا

كأنما أنت في الدنيا سليمان

He reminds you of the earth, the world and all within,

As if you were Solomon in this life.

العلم والفن من أولى خصائصه

وللفكاهة والآداب ميدان

Knowledge and art were his foremost traits,

And for humor and literature he had a gift.

إن شئت فهو ابن مهدي بين زمرته

أو شئت فهو فصيح العرب سحبان

Among his group he was the son of Mahdi,

Or if you wish, the most eloquent of Arabs.

صنيعة العلم للدنيا ومعجزة

كم استنارت به للناس أذهان

The making of knowledge, a miracle for this world,

How many minds were enlightened by it.

فيا سميراً إذا عزّ السمير لقد

سامتني بعدك أشواق وأحزان

So my friend, when a friend is missed,

Yearnings and sorrows have overcome me.

وطال ليلي تحدوني لواعجه

من بعد ما كان لطير الحب أفنان

My night grew long, sleep evading me,

After the birds of love were done singing.

مزمار بيروت يشجيني ويطربني

وأين مني بيروت ولبنان

The flute of Beirut stirs and delights me,

Yet where are Beirut and Lebanon from me?
