1. بليت بحبِّ بين جنبيَّ مشتعل

    ولا ذنب لي فيما بليت ولا حول

    I suffered from a burning love in my heart

    Though I'm not to blame for what I suffered, nor have power over it

  2. وجدّد مني الطيف شوقاً أهاجني

    فذكرني عذراً وما كان قد حصل

    And the specter renewed in me a yearning that stirred me

    Reminding me gently, though nothing had yet occurred

  3. فهيهات أن أنسى غداة لقيتها

    تميس كغصن البان أو شارب ثمل

    Alas! How could I forget that morning I met her

    Swaying like a bough of acacia or one drunk on wine

  4. تساوى لديها الحب والخفر والحيا

    وحيّت ولكن بالدلال وبالخجل

    To her, love, coyness and modesty were all equal

    She greeted me, but with charm and shyness

  5. وساد سكون الحب بيني وبينها

    كلانا به داء المحبّة قد نزل

    Tranquil love reigned between us

    Both stricken with love’s malady

  6. فخاطبت العينان منها كليهما

    وكان حديث العين أبلغ ما نُقل

    I addressed both her eyes

    And the eye's discourse was the most eloquent ever conveyed

  7. وتحت ظلال السدر قد طاب يومنا

    وعاذلتني بالقرب لم تدر ما حصل

    Beneath the shade of the lote tree, our day was sweet

    And she teased me with her nearness, unaware of what had transpired

  8. وعذراء كالغصن الرطيب إذا انثنت

    وكالشمس لاحت حين منتصف الطَّفل

    A maid like a moist branch when bent

    And like the sun when it reached the horizon at dawn

  9. أشير إليها بالبنان مبيّناً

    بأنّك أنت الروح والقصد والأمل

    I gestured toward her with my fingertips

    Indicating “You are the spirit, the goal, the hope”

  10. وأنت حياتي والنعيم وجنّتي

    مليكة قلبي لا سعاد ولا أمل

    You are my life, my bliss and my paradise

    Queen of my heart, neither happiness nor hope without you

  11. فيبدو حنان الحب يوحيه لحظُها

    ويحمر ورد الخدِّ منها على عَجل

    So the tenderness of love appeared in her glance

    And the rose of her cheek reddened in haste

  12. وتبسم عن در تزين نظامه

    شفاه عقيق بينها الراح والعسل

    Smiling with a pearl-like order

    Lips of carnelian, in which rest pleasure and honey

  13. شفاه ثوت فيها الحياة هنيّةً

    وثغر لذيذ الرشف يغريك بالقُبل

    Lips in which life itself resides pleasantly

    A delicious mouth that tempts you to kiss

  14. ألا فاذكري عذراء لا تقطعي الأمل

    حنانيك يا عذراء لا تقطعي الأمل

    Oh maiden, remember, do not cut off hope

    Your tenderness, oh maiden, do not cut off hope

  15. أعذراء هذا الاسم منك نقشته

    بصفحة قلبي ببالغرام ولم يزل

    O maiden, I inscribed this name

    On the page of my heart, with passion that still remains

  16. أحبك يا عذراء والحب حالة

    إذا عرضت للمرء لم يدر ما فعل

    I love you, O maiden, and love is a condition

    That, when it afflicts a man, he knows not what he did

  17. وأنت وحق الحب في الحسن آية

    تعالت وجلّت أن يقاس بها مثل

    You and the right of love are a verse in beauty

    Sublime and exalted, that none other can equal
