خذَي مَسعاكِ مُثَخنةَ الجِراحِ

ونامي فوقَ داميةِ الصِفاحِ

My wounded ears have heard

Sleep atop the rocky plateau

ومُدِّي بالمماتِ إلى حياةٍ

تسَرُّ وبالعَناءِ إلى ارتياح

And with death extend to a life

That gladdens and with ordeal to comfort

وقَرّي فوقَ جَمرِكِ أو تُرَدِّي

من العُقبى إلى أمرٍ صُراح

Roast atop your embers or cool down

From misfortune to outright clarity

وقُولي قد صَبْرتُ على اغتباقٍ

فماذا لو صَبرتُ على اصِطباح

And say, “I have had patience for a gulped drink

So what if I had patience for a nice morning drink?”

فانَّ أمرَّ ما أدْمَى كِفاحاً

طُعونُ الخائِفينَ مِن النجاح

The most bitter struggle

Is the stab of those fearing success

فكُوني في سماحِكِ بالضحايا

كعهدكِ في سماحِكِ بالأضاحي

So be with the victims in your forgiveness

As you have been with sacrifices in your forgiveness

فان الحقَّ ، يقطُرُ جانباه

دَماً ، صِنوُ المُروُءةِ والسماح

Truth drips from its sides

Blood, made by manliness and forgiveness

وتأريخُ الشُعوبِ إذا تَبَنّى

دمَ الأحرارِ لا يمحوهُ ماحي

And when people’s history adopts

The blood of the free it cannot be erased by an eraser

فِلَسْطينٌ سَلامُ اللهِ يَسري

على تلك المشارِفِ والبطاح

Palestine, may God’s peace flow

On those horizons and low-lands

رأيتُكِ مِن خِلال الفَجرِ يُلقي

على خُضْر الرُّبى أحلى وِشاح

I saw you through the dawn throwing

Onto the green grass the most beautiful scarf

أطَلَّ النَسرُ مُنتصِباً عليهِ

فهبَّ الديكُ يُنذِرُ بالصياح

The eagle stood erect atop it

So the rooster crowed warning with shouts

يؤوبُ الليلُ منه إلى جَناحٍ

وتبدو الشمسُ منه على جَناح

The night tosses in it to a wing

And the sun appears in it on a wing

وعَينُ الفجرِ تَذري الدمعَ طَلاًّ

وتَمسَحُه بمنديل الصباح

And the dawn’s eye sheds dew

And wipes it with the handkerchief of morning

وأنفاسُ المُروج معطَّراتٌ

بأنفاسِ الرُعاة إلى المَراح

And the meadows’ breaths are fragranced

By the breath of shepherds to the meadows

لَمستُ الوحيَ في لْحنِ المثاني

وشِمتُ الحُزنَ في وقْعِ المساحي

I touched revelation in the tune of the refuge

And sensed sorrow in the fall of the plains

وغَنَّى " أُورْشَلَيمَ " يُعيدُ لحناً

لداود هَزارٌ بالصُّداح

And “Jerusalem” sang repeating

A tune for David a thousand times in the villages

وحولي مِن شبابِكِ أيُّ روضٍ

ينُمُّ حَديثُه بشذا الأقاح

And around your youth, which garden

Sleeps whose talk smells of apple blossom?

وألطافٍ ، كأنفُسهم عِذابٍ

وأسمارٍ ، كأوجُهِهمْ صِباح

And kindnesses, as if they are pains

And darknesses, as if they are dawns

سلاماً للعُكُوفِ على التياحي

وشوقاً للظِماء إلى ارتياحي

Greetings to the hunching overconfirmed

And yearning to the thirsty for comfort

وحُزناً أنْ يجُرَّ الدهرُ حُزناً

على تلك الغَطارفةِ الوضاح

And sorrow that time should pull a sorrow

Upon those witty, sparkling, bright-faced girls

أأمَّ القُدْسِ والتأريخُ دامٍ

ويومُكِ مثلُ أمسِكِ في الكفاح

Is the mother of Jerusalem her history endless?

And is your day like your yesterday in struggle?

ومَُهدُكِ وهو مهبِطُ كُلِّ وحيٍ

كنعشكِ وهو مُشتَجرُ الرِماح

Is your cradle, landing place of every revelation

Like your bier, shooter of spears?

و " وادي التِيَهِ " إنْ لم يأوِ " موسى "

فقد آوى الصليب على " صلاح "

And if Moses did not lodge in the “Valley of Bewilderment”

Then the cross lodged with Salah

وذكرى " بختَ نُصَّر " في الفيافي

يُجَدَّدُها " أِلنْبي " في الضواحي

And the memory of Nebuchadnezzar in the wastelands

Allenby renews in the suburbs

فلا تَتَخبَّطى فالليلُ داجٍ

وإنْ لم يَبْقَ بُدٌّ مِن صباح

So do not waver, the night is pitch black

And there must be a morning

شَدَدْتِ عُرى نِطاقِكِ فاستمِري

ولا يثقُلْ عليكِ فتُستباحي

You have tightened the belts of your determination, so go on

And do not be too hard on yourself or you will be violated

ولا تُغْنَيْ بِنا إنّا بُكاةٌ

نَمُدُّكِ بالعويل وبالصياح

And do not sings songs of our weeping for you

We extend to you only weeping and shouts

ولا تُغْنَيْ بِنا فالفِعلُ جَوٌّ

مَغِيْمٌ عِندَنا والقولُ صاح

And do not sings songs of us for action with us

Is bleak while talk is but shouting

ولن تَجدي كإيانا نصيراً

يَدُقُّ من الأسى راحاً براح

And you’ll never find partisans like us

Beating with pain, wound alongside wound

ولا قوماً يَرُدُّون الدّواهي

وقد خَرِسَتْ بألسْنةٍ فِصاح

And not a people opposing unjust laws

For their tongues have been silenced by screams

أعِيْْذُكِ مِن مَصيرٍ نحنُ فيه

لقد عُوِّذتِ مِن أَجَلٍ مُتاح

I protection for you from a fate that we

Have been protected from, with means accessible,

ووضعٍ أمسِ كُلُهمُ لواهٍ

به واليوم كلُهم لواحي

A situation whose people yesterday were wavering in it

And today are all banners

تَنَصَّلَ منه زُوراً صانِعوهُ

كمولودٍ تحدَّرَ مِن سِفاح

Their makers have sneakily disowned it

Like a baby sliding out of vagina

وذمُّوا أنَّهم كانوا عُكوفاً

عليهِ في الغُدُوِّ وفي الرواح

And they blamed that they had been hovering

Over it in the morning and at rest

وتأريخٍ أُريدَ لنا ارتجالاً

فآبَ كما أريدَ إلى افتضاح

And history was fabricated for us on the spot

So it came out as it was intended, disgraced,

شَحَنَّا دفَتيهِ بمُغمَضاتٍ

" كأحداقِ المها مرضى صحاح "

We packed its pages with delusions -

“Like the pupils of the sick craving morning drink”

وغَلَّفْنا مظاهرهُ حِساناً

مزخرفةً على صُوَرٍ قِباح

And we coated its features so gently,

As ornament on ugly pictures

وسُقْنا الناسَ مُكْرهةً عليه

على يد ِ ناعمينَ به وَقاح

And we dragged the people against their will to it

At the hands of villains brash with it

ونَصَّبْنا مرَوِّضةً غِلاظاً

على ما في الطبائِعِ منْ جِماح

And we installed rough guardians

On what the nature has of boldness in it

وأحْلَلْناه وهو ضريحُ شعبٍ

محلَّ الوَحْيِ جاءَ من الضُّراح

And we made lawful something which is the tomb of a people

The Place were revelation came from bushes

نجرَّعُهُ ذُعافاً ثم نُضفي

عليهِ محاسِنَ الشَّبِم القَراح

We force it down hot, then give

Fine descriptions on what is distasteful

ورُبَّةَ " صَفْقَةٍ " عُقِدَت فكانت

كتحريم الطلاقِ على نِكاح

And the idol of a “treaty” was contracted so it was

Like prohibition of divorce from marriage

تُدبَّرُ في العواصِم من مُرِيْبِ

خبيثِ الذكر ، مَطعونِ النواحي

Made in the capitals by an untrustworthy

Man known for his evil veterbrates

تفوحُ الخمر منها في اختْتامٍ

ويبدُو منها في افْتتاح

You smell wine being concluded

And starting from it drunkenness shows

ويُسْفِرُ نَصُّها المُسوَدّ خِزياً

ومَظلمةً عن الغِيد المِلاح

And its inscribed black text signals

Humiliation and darkness without a glimmer

و" تصريحٍ " يُمِطّطه قويّ

كَلَوْحِ الطّينِ يدحوه داحي

And a permit only strong ones

Tailor like mud tablets smoothed by a smoother

و " حلفٍ " لستُ أدري مِن ذُهولٍ

أعن جِدٍّ يُدَبَّرُ أم مِزاح

And an “alliance” I do not know are they serious

Or is it a jest from clowns

لنا حقٌ يُرجَّى بالتماسٍ

وباطِلُهمْ يُنفَّذُّ بالسلاح

We have a right to hope by petition

While their falsehood is executed by force

ولستُ بعارِفٍ أبداً حَليفاَ

يهدِّدُه حليفٌ باكتساح

I do not know any ally ever

Threatened by ally with invasion

فلسطينُ تَوَّقيْ أنْ تكوني

كما كُنَّا بمَدرجَةِ الرياح

Palestine, I advise you not to become

Like we have been in position of winds

وأنْ تضَعي أمورَكِ في نِصابٍ

يوَّفُر او يُّطَفَّفُ باجتراح

And not to put your affairs in a panel

That provides or reduces arbitrarily

وهابِي أن تُمدَّ إليكِ مِنَّا

يدُ المتضارِبين على القِداح

And forbid that there be extended to you from us

The hands of those differing over gambling arrows

فكم هاوٍ أَجَدَّ لنا جُروحاً

بدعوى أنَّه آسي جراح

How many ruinous have hurt us seriously

Claiming to heal wounds

وأُصدِقُكِ الحديثَ فكم " حُلولٍ "

حرامٍ ، لُحْنَ في زِيٍّ مُباح

And I speak the truth – how many “solutions”

Forbidden, composed in permitted form

"نُطَوِّفُ ما نُطَوِّفُ ثُم نأوي

الى بيتٍ " أُقيمَ على " اقتراح "

“We circumambulate what we circumambulate then we come

To a house” built on “suggestion”

يُخرِجُ ألفَ وجه مِنْ حديثٍ

ويَخْلُقُ ألْفَ معنىً لاصطلاح

Bringing out a thousand faces from one speech

And creating a thousand meanings for one term
