هو الحُكم – إن حقَّقتَ – لُعبةُ لاعبِ

يُسَمُّونَ ترقيعاتهِ بالتجارِبِ

It is the rule - if realized - a game of player

They call his patches experiments

فتجرِبةٌ للحكمِ خَلقُ موظفٍ

وتجرِبةٌ للشعبِ تخريجُ نائب

So an experiment for the ruler is creating an employee

And an experiment for the people is graduating a representative

وإنَّ بلاداً بالتجارِب هُدّمت

وضُيّعَ أهلوها لإحدى العجائب

Nations have been destroyed by experiments

And its people lost for one of the wonders

وأعجبُ منه أن يُمنِّي رجالُها

نفوسَهمُ خيراً بعقبى المصائب

More wondrous than that is that its men wish

Good upon their souls after calamities

تُعطَّلُ أربابُ المواهبِ ريثما

يُتمَّمُ تخريجُ الضِّعاف المواهب

The owners of talents are disabled until

The graduation of the weak talents is completed

ولو جَرَّبوا أهل المناصب وحدَهم

لهانَ ، ولكنْ جُربّوا في المناصب

And if they had tried only the office holders

It would have been easy, but they tried them in office

من الظلم أن تأتي قصيدةُ شاعر

لتُصلِحَ حالاً أو مقالةُ كاتب

It is injustice that the poem of a poet comes

To fix a situation or the article of a writer

فما دامَ حُكمٌ للتجاريب راهن

فليس لنا غيرُ انتظارِ العواقب

As long as the rule of experiments is betting

We have nothing but awaiting the consequences

ولكنَّ دأبَ الشاعِرينَ تحرُّشٌ

ومن عادةٍ الكُتابِ خلقُ المتاعبّّ

But the habit of poets is impudence

And the custom of writers is creating troubles

دعوا القومَ أحراراً يؤدُّونَ واجباً

ولا تحسَبِوا سهلاً قياماً بواجبّ

Leave the people free performing a duty

And do not think it is easy to perform a duty

ولا تحسبوا سهلاً بناءَ دوائرٍ

وتوقيع أوراقٍ وتوزيعَ راتب!

And do not think it is easy to build departments

And sign papers and distribute salary!

غزا الجهلُ أرض الرافدْينِ فحلَّها

كثيرَ السَّرايا مُستجاشَ الكتائب

Ignorance invaded the land of the two rivers and settled it

With many elite troops and armed battalions

طليعةُ جيشٍ للمصائبِ هدَّدتْ

كرامتَهُ والجْهلُ رأسُ المصائب

The vanguard of an army of calamities threatened

Its dignity and ignorance is the capital of calamities

وما خيرُ شعب لستَ تعثرُ بينه

على قارئٍ من كلِّ ألفٍ وكاتب

What good is a people you do not stumble between

A reader out of every thousand and writer

تمشَّى يجرُّ الفَقْر ردفاً وراءهُ

وأتعِسْ بمصحوبٍ وأتعِسْ بصاحب

Poverty walked dragging behind him

And more miserable with a companion and more miserable with a friend

وراحا على الجُمهور ضيفينِ ألفْيَا

مُناخاً جميلاً بين هذي الخرائب

And they went to the public as two guests

A nice climate between these ruins

فكان لِزاماً أنْ تحوزَ عصابةٌ

تفيتْ بظلِّ الجاه أعلى المراتب

So it was necessary for a gang to win

Through the shadows of prestige the highest positions

وكان لزاماً أن تتمَّ سيادةٌ

عليه لأبناءِ " الذوات " الأطايب

And it was necessary for a rule

Over it for the sons of "entities" the good smelling

وكان لزاماً أن تُقادَ جموعُه

حفاةً عراةً مهطعينَ " لراكب "

And it was necessary for its masses to be led

Barefoot, naked "for the rider"

وكان لزاماً أن تحاكَ دسائسٌ

له تحت أستار الخِداع الكواذب

And it was necessary for conspiracies to be knitted

For him under the curtains of deceptive liars

وكان لزاماً أن تعطَّل صنعةٌ

وأن يُصبحَ التوظيفُ أغلى المكاسب

And it was necessary for a profession to be disrupted

And employment becomes the most expensive of earnings

مشى الشعب منهوكَ القُوى واهنَ الخُطى

كواهلُه قد أُثقِلتْ بالضرائب

The people walked exhausted and faltering

Their shoulders weighed down by taxes

وقد حِيلَ ما بين الحياةِ وبينهُ

فللموت منه بين عَينٍ وحاجب

And what is between life and him is inverted

So death has between an eye and an eyebrow

وكُمَّت به الأفواه عن كشف سوءَةٍ

كأنْ لم يكن من ثَمَّ عتبٌ لعاتب

And mouths were shut about exposing evil

As if there were no reproach for reproacher

وأوجعُ ما يُصمي الغيورَ مقْاصرٌ

أطلَّتْ على مجحورةٍ في الزرائب

And what silences the zealous is a barrier

That looked out over a protected one in the shrubs

يَبينُ على الحيطان شرخُ نعيمها

وتغمُرها اللذاتُ من كلِّ جانب

The crack of its bliss appears on the walls

And pleasures overwhelm it from every side

وتحيي ليالي الرّقْص فيها خليعةٌ

تكشَّف عن سوق الحسان الكواعب

And a promiscuous woman revives its dance nights

Baring the market of the flirting coquettes

ويجبى إليها خمرُها من مشارقٍ

يجادُ بها تقطيرُها وَمغارب

And its wine is collected to it from easts

Its distillation and sunsets pay for it

وتلك من الإدقاع تتَّسد الثرى

يلاعبُ جنبيها دبيبُ العقارب

And that is of poverty, the ground is blocked off

The creeping of scorpions plays at its sides

وقد ذيدَ عنها الزادُ رَفهاً لآكلٍ

وحُرّم فيها الماء صفواً لشارب

And provision is prohibited to it extravagantly for an eater

And pure water is forbidden in it for a drinker

وإنيَّ في إرضائيَ الشِعرَ حائرٌ

وإني لمأخوذٌ بهذا التضارب

And I am confused in satisfying poetry

And I am obsessed with this contradiction

فقد يُعجِز التفكيرَ ذكرُ محاسنٍ

وقد يُخجل القرطاسَ ذِكرُ المثالب

For the mention of virtues may disable thinking

And the paper may be embarrassed by the mention of blemishes
