عَرَتِ الخطوبُ وكيف لاتعرو
فصَبَرتَ أنتَ ودِرعُكَ الصبرُ
The misfortunes came and how could they not come
You were patient, and patience is your armor
وصَبرتَ أنتَ وأنت ذو ثقةٍ
أن لو تشاءُ لزُحزِحَ الأمر
You were patient, confident
That if you wish, the matter would be removed
لانجاب عُسْرٌ من فرائسه
صِيدُ الرجال ولا رتَمى اليسر
No prey escapes its clutches
Men's game, the left hand does not miss
ولَدَرَّ ضَرْعٌ رُحتَ تحلِبُه
إنْ كان أعوَزَ غيرَكَ الدَرُّ
A teat may be milked if another cannot get the pearls
Misfortunes came, but you did not lower
عَرتِ الخطوب فما خَفَضْتَ لها
من جانحٍ وكذلك النَسْر
Any wing for them, nor the eagle
You went on, the skies aflame
ومَضيْت تلتهبُ السما صُعُداً
لك عند غُرِّ نُجومها وَكر
You have a den among its twinkling stars
On your wings, destruction landed
وعلى جَناحَيْك ارتَمتْ كِسَراً
مثلَّ الضَّباب عواصفٌ صِرُّ
Like fog, raging storms
They passed you and you plundered them
فتجاوَزَتْكَ وراح نَهبتَها
نَخْبُ الفؤادِ وخامِلٌ غَمْر
The best of hearts and a dormant ember
Uselessness is flexible, you don’t own it
النَفْعُ رِخوٌ لِستَ صاحِبَه
وأخوكَ هذا الشامِخُ الضُر
And this towering brother of yours
You dragged along and the world never spelled
أجررتَ والدنيا فما سَطَرتْ
الا وعندك فوقَها سَطر
Anything but over it, a line
You both went on, each with its step
ومضيتُما كلٌ بوطأته
فَرَسَيْ رهانٍ أنت والدهر
Two racing horses, you and fate
Misfortunes came, how could they not
عرت الخطوب وكيف لا تعرو
وطريقُ مثلِكَ ، صامداً ، وعَر
And the path of the likes of you, resisting, is exposed
The hyenas turned on you
عَدَتِ الضِّباعُ عليك عاويةً
طناً بأنك مأكلٌ جَزْر
Expecting you an easy prey
They tasted you and one of them said
فتذوَّقَتْك فقال قائلُها
انَ الغَضَنفَر لحمُه مُرّ
The meat of the leopard is bitter
You emerged unharmed, dignified
وخَلَصت حُرَّ الوَجه ذا ألَقٍ
ووجُوهُهُم مطموسةٌّ عفْر
While their faces are obscured
They envied you for smashing their pride
حَسَدوكَ أنَّكَ دُسْتَ هامَهُمُ
مُتجبَّراً ولنَعْلِكَ الفَخْر
Arrogantly, and yours is the pride
They resented you and their hearts burned
وحَقَرْتَهم فقُلوبُهْم وَغْرُ
من ضِغنةٍ وعيونُهم خُزْر
Out of spite, and their eyes turned green
They have no leadership, they are negligent
لا أمرَ عندهَمُ فهمُ هَمَلٌ
غُفْلٌ وكل حياتِهم خَمْر
Oblivious, and their whole life is intoxication
The leader of a people like the raven in him
وزعيمُ قومٍ كالغُراب به
صِغَرٌ وفي خُطُواتِه كِبْر
Littleness, and in his steps, grandeur
He is fooled by what does not honor him
يغتَرُّ فيما لا يُشرِّفُه
جَهِلَ المُغَفَّل كيفَ يَغْتَّرّ
The ignorance of the oblivious, how he is fooled
He is fooled that they threw in his stomach
يغتَرُّ أنْ ألقَوا بمعدتِه
عَفْنَ الطعام فراحَ يجتَّر
The rot of food, so he went dragging
The stupidity is evident, you can almost read it
بادي الغَباء تكادُ تقرؤه
بالظنِّ لا خَبرٌ ولا خُبْر
By guess, no news or reports
He became a minister, so he went raving
أضحى وزيراً فاغتدَى رَهِقاً
مثل الحمار يؤودُه الوِزْر
Like a donkey, burdened by the load
My God, you are a horse they rode
لله أنتَ مطيةٌ عَرِيَتْ
منها الشَوَى وتأكَّلَ الظَهر
Until chafed, its back eaten
And a shield the dregs throw
ودريئةٍ يرمي الأبيَّ بها
وغدٌ ، ويُصمي البّرَةَ الفُجر
Tomorrow, and they keep the nanny goat overnight
The rabble walked out on its edges
والتفَّ عن أطرافه هََمَجٌ
مثل النَّعام يسودُها الذُعر
Like ostriches taken by panic
They milked him, so in their palms
وتحلَّبوه ففي اكُفِّهم
شَطرٌ وفي أفواهِهم شَطْر
A share, and in their mouths a share
Among the immoral, with every knocker
من فاجرينَ بكل قارعةٍ
حلّوا تحدَّث عنهم العُهْر
They landed and debauchery tells of them
And the dissenters of united doctrines
ومُفَرِّقين مذاهباً جُمِعَت
وحَنَا عليها الآيُ والذِكر
The Quran and verses preached mercy on them
Like thieves, the darkness binds them
مثل اللُّصوصِ يلُمُّ شَمْلَهُمُ
خَيْطُ الدُجى ويَحُلُّه الفجر
And the dawn unbinds them
Oh slave of evil in his allegations
يا عبدَ سوء في مزاعِمِهِ
يشتطُّ حيثُ تحرَّرَ الفِكر
He is arrogant where the mind is freed
Partisanship and the whole world alone
قبليَّةٌ والكونُ وحَدَّه
فكر وخطَّ مصيرهُ ذَرُّ ؟!
A mind and a fate bound to scatter?!
Are you a universe to be shaded
أفأنتَ كونٌ يُستَظلُّ به
أمْ أنت يا ابنَ جهالةٍ عَصْر
Or are you, o son of modern ignorance
Say “to the newspaper”, you are its misguided leader
قل " للصحيفةِ " انتَ قائدُها
سَفَهاً وأنتَ زعيمُها الحرُّ
Stupidly, and you are its free leader
I - and glory has spaciousness for me
إني – ولي في المجد مُتَّسَعٌ
عَفٌّ عن استغلالِة برُّ
Abstain from exploitation, innocence
I saved nothing of it but ambition
لم ادَّخر منه سوَى نَشَب
هو للبلاد وأهلها ذُخْر
It is for the country and its people, wealth
I enriched generations, eating
غَنِيت به الأجيالُ طاعمةً
منها السمينَ ، وعَضَّني الفقر
From it the fat, and poverty bit me
I do not exploit, so you are a lesson
لا أستَغِلُّ فأنتَ لي عظةٌ
فيما أتيتَ ، وأنتَ لي زجْر
In what you came with, and you are my deterrent
