1. رونقٌ في الثَّرى وعلى الروضةِ

    لطفٌ من السَّما مسكوبُ

    There is splendor on the land and in the meadow

    A subtle kindness poured from heaven

  2. ما أرقَّ الأصيلَ سال بشفَّافِ

    شعاعٍ منه الفضاءُ الرحيب

    How elegant the genuine gleamed, flowing with the transparency

    Of rays, through which the vast space widens

  3. كلُّ شيءٍ تحت السماء بلونٍ

    شفقيًّ مورَّدٍ مخضوب

    Everything under the sky is in a

    Rosy, reddish, dyed hue

  4. وكأن الآفاقَ تَحْتَضِنُ الأرضَ

    بآصالِها إطارٌ ذهيب

    As if the horizons embrace the earth

    With its origin a gilded frame

  5. مَتّعِ العينَ إنَّ حُسناً تراهُ

    الآنَ من بعدِ ساعةٍ منهوب

    Gladden the eye, behold, you see beauty

    Now after a fleeting ravaged hour

  6. والذي يخلَعُ الأصيلُ على الأرض

    بكفِّ الدُّجى أخِيذٌ سليب

    That which adorns the land when the mantle of dusk removes

    Is a captivating, smooth ray

  7. منظرٌ للحقولِ إذ تُشرقُ الشمسُ

    جميلٌ وإذ يَحيِنُ الغروب

    A beautiful scene of the fields when the sun rises

    And again when night falls

  8. ولقد هزّني مسيلُ غديرٍ

    مِنْ على جانبيهِ روضٌ عشيب

    And a valley stream has shook me

    With a grassy knoll on both its sides

  9. يُظهِر الشيءَ ضدُّه .. وتُجارى

    بسواها محاسنٌ وعيوب

    The opposite reveals a thing.. and its likeness makes

    For virtues and faults to compete

  10. وكذاكَ المرعى الخصيبُ يُحلّيه

    إلى الناظرينَ مرعىً جديب

    And so the fertile pasture is beautified

    To onlookers by a barren pasture

  11. ثمَّ دبَّ المَساءُ تَقْدمُه الأطيارُ

    مرعوبةً وريحٌ جَنوب

    Then evening crept forward led by birds

    Frightened, and a south wind

  12. وغناءٌ يتلو غناءً ورُعيانٌ

    بقُطْعانِهم تَضيقُ الدروب

    And a song followed by as song, and shepherds

    With their flocks crowding the paths

  13. يَحْبِسُ العينَ لانتشار الدياجي

    في السَّما منظرٌ لطيفٌ مَهيب

    Detaining the eye due to the scattering of fireflies

    In the sky a charming, revered scene

  14. شفَقٌ رائعٌ رويداً رويداً

    تحتَ جُنحٍ من الظلام يذوب

    A wondrous dusk gradually, gradually

    Melting under wings of darkness

  15. وترى السُحبَ طيَّةً تِلوَ أُخرى

    قد أُجيد التنسيقُ والترتيب

    And you see the clouds one layer after another

    Cunningly arranged and organized

  16. وتراها وشعلةً الشفقِ الأحمرِ

    تبدو أثناءها وتغيب

    And you see it when the embers of the red dusk appear

    To emerge amidst it and disappear

  17. كرَمادٍ خلاَّهُ وانزاحَ عنه

    قبسٌ وسْطَ غابةٍ مشبوب

    Like cinder from which an ember departed

    Amidst an ignited forest

  18. ثمَّ سدَّ الأفقَ الدُّخانُ تعالى

    من بيوتٍ للنارِ فيها شُبوب

    Then smoke covered the horizon billowing

    From homes with flames and logs aflame

  19. منظرٌ يبعثُ الفراهة والأنسَ لقلبِ

    الفلاّح حين يئوب

    A scene that evokes serenity and comfort for the heart

    Of the peasant when evening draws near

  20. يعرفُ اللقمةَ الهنيئةَ في البيتِ

    مُجدٌّ طولَ النهار دَءوب

    Who knows the delicious morsel in the house

    That persevered hard working all day long

  21. بُرهةً ريثما انقضى سمرٌ

    تقطرُ لطفاُ أطرافُه وتَطيب

    For an enjoyable evening gathering

    Whose edges ooze kindness and aroma

  22. واستقلَّ السريرَ أو حُزمةَ القشِّ

    أريبٌ . نِضْوٌ . حريبٌ . تَريب

    And retired to his bed or bundle of hay

    Drowsy. Slumbering. Dozing. Napping

  23. سكنَتْ كلُّ نأمةٍ واستقرَّتْ

    واستفزَّ الأسماعَ حتَّى الدَّبيب

    Every creature calmed and settled

    And even the creeping of insects provokes hearing

  24. واحتواهمْ كالموتِ نومٌ عميق

    وتغشَّاهُمُ سكونٌ رهيب

    And encompasses them like death, a deep sleep

    And a revered stillness covers them

  25. ولقد تَخرِقُ الهدوءَ شُويهاتٌ

    وديكٌ يدعو وديكٌ يُجيب

    And the still of night is surely pierced by wailings

    And a rooster calling and another answering

  26. أو نداءاتُ حارسٍ وهو في الأشباح

    لاحتْ لعينه مستريب

    Or the shouts of a guard in the gloaming

    When something suspect appears before his eye

  27. أو صدَى " طَلقةٍ " يبيتُ عليها

    أحدُ الجانبينِ وهو حريب

    Or the echo of a "gunshot" which one of the two adversaries

    Lies waiting for, while the other lies in ambush

  28. تركَ الزارعُ المَزارعَ للكلب

    فأضحى خلالَهنَّ يجوب

    The farmer left the farms for the dog

    So he roams them going to and fro

  29. شامخٌ كالذي يُناطُ به الحكمُ

    له جَيئةٌ بها وذُهوب

    Standing tall like one entrusted with authority

    He has a demeanor and bearing

  30. كانَ جُهدُ الفلاّحِ خفَّف عنه

    جَهدهُ فهو مُستكِنٌّ أديب

    The toil of the peasant was lightened for him

    While he feels secure, cultured

  31. وهو في الميلِ غيرهُ الصبحَ وحشٌ

    هائجٌ ضيِّق الفؤادِ غَضوب

    And at night he changes, at dawn a ferocious beast

    Agitated, narrowed in chest, wrathful

  32. فاحصٌ ظُفْرَه ونابيهِ أحلى

    ما لديهِ أظفارهُ والنُيوب

    Inspecting his claws and canine teeth, the best

    Things he possesses, his claws and fangs

  33. إنَّه عن رِعاية الحَقلِ مسئول

    على ترك أمره معتوب

    He is responsible for safeguarding the field

    And would be blamed if he neglected his task

  34. وكثيراً ما سرَّه أنَّه بات

    جريحاً .. ورأسًه مشجوب

    And it often delighted him to have spent

    The night wounded.. his head gashed

  35. ليرى السيّدُ الذي ناب عنه

    أنَّ حيوانَه شُجاعٌ أريب

    So the master whom he deputized for can see

    That his beast is vicious and wild

  36. ولكيلا يرى مُسامحةً

    يَعدِلُ منها لغيره ويُنيب

    And so that he will not see tolerance

    And reproach another and denounce

  37. للقُريَّاتِ عالَمٌ مُستقلٌّ

    هو عن عالَمٍ سواه غريب

    The peasants have an independent world

    That is strange to any other world

  38. يتساوى غروبُهم وركودُ النفس

    منهم وفجرهُم والهبُوب

    Their sunset and the lulling of spirit

    Are equal, as is their dawn and gusts of wind

  39. كطيور السماءِِِ همّهُمُ الأوحدُ

    زرعٌ يرَعْونه وحبوب

    Like the birds of the sky their sole

    Concern is crops they graze and grains

  40. يلحظون السماءَ آناً فآناً

    ضحكُهم طوعُ أمرها والقُطوب

    They observe the sky, time and again

    Their laughter obeying its mandate and freezing

  41. أتُرى الجوَّ هادئاً أمْ عَصوفاً

    أتصوبُ السماء أمْ لا تصوب

    Is the weather still or tempestuous?

    Does the sky pour down or hold back its downpour?

  42. إن يومَ الفلاّحِ مهما اكتسى حُسناً

    بغير الغيومِ يومٌ عصيب

    However alluring the peasant's day is without

    Clouds, a day of suffering it would be

  43. وهو بالغيمِ يخنقُ القلب والأفقَ

    جميلٌ في عينه محبوب

    And with clouds choking his heart and the horizon

    Beautiful in his eyes, beloved

  44. للقُرى روعةٌ وللقرويِّين

    إذا صابَ أرضهم شُؤبوب

    The villages have splendor and the villagers

    When rain soaks their land

  45. تُبْصِرُ الكلَّ ثمَّ حتى الصَّبايا

    فوقَ سِيمائهم هناءٌ وطِيب

    You see everyone, even the young girls

    Above their markings, gladness and aroma

  46. يُفرِح البيتَ أنَّه سوف تُمسي

    بقراتٌ فيه وعنزٌ حَلوب

    It brings joy to the home that it will evening

    Cows and young lambs bleating

  47. ويرى الطفلُ أنَّ حصتَّه إذْ

    يُخصبُ الوالدان ثوبٌ قشيب

    And the child sees that its share when

    The parents have a good crop, a coat made of flax

  48. أذكياءٌ .. عيونُهم تسبقُ الألسُنَ

    عمَّا ترومه وتنوب

    Clever.. their eyes precede their tongues

    In what they covet and ambition

  49. والذي يَستمدُّ من عالم القريةِ

    وَحياً وعيشةً لَلبيب

    And he who draws inspiration from the village world

    Vitality and livelihood is perceptive

  50. مطمئنونَ يحلُمونَ بأنَّ الخيرَ

    والشرَّ كُلّهُ مكتوب

    Content they dream that good

    And evil, all is predetermined

  51. لا يطيرونَ من سرورٍ ولا حزنٍ

    شَعاعاً ، لأنه محسوب

    They neither fly from joy or sadness

    A moment, for it is anticipated

  52. ولقد يغضَبون إذ ينزلُ الغيثُ

    شحيحاً ...والأرضُ عطشى تلوب

    And they may get angry when rain comes

    Meagerly..and the land thirsty and withered

  53. أتُرى كانَ يعوِز اللهَ ماءٌ

    لو أتتْ دِيمةٌ علينا سَكوب

    As though God lacked water

    Had a continual downpour come upon us!

  54. ثمَّ يستفظعون إثمَ الذي قالوا

    فينوونَ عندهُ أنْ يتوبوا

    Then they abhor the sin of what they said

    Intending with Him to repent

  55. فإذا الشمسُ فوقهم فيقولون :

    أعُقبى إنابةٍ تعذيب ؟

    So when the sun shines above them they say:

    Does turning back in repentance incur more torture?!

  56. أفإيمانُنا بعيدٌ عنِ الخيرِ

    وُكفراننا إليه قريب..!

    Is our faith far from good

    While our disbelief is nearer to it..!

  57. هكذا يَرجِعُ التقىّ أمامَ

    العقلِ وهو المشكِّكُ المغلوب

    Thus piety returns before

    The mind which is the doubter, the defeated

  58. قلتُ إذ رِيعَ خاطري من مُحيطٍ

    كلُّ ما فيه موحشٌ وكئيب

    I said when my mind drifted from an ocean

    Where all in it is desolate and gloomy

  59. ليس عدلاً تشاؤمُ المرءِ في الدنيا

    وفيها هذا المحيط الطَروب

    It is not justice, the gloom of man in life

    And in it this vast serene ocean

  60. مِلءُ عينيكَ خضرة تًستسرٌّ

    النفسُ منها وتُستطار القلوب

    Fill your eyes with greenness that delights

    The soul and heals hearts

  61. عندَهم مثلَ غيرِهم رغباتٌ

    وعليهمْ كما عليه خطوب

    They have, like others, wishes

    And duties upon them like all

  62. غير أنّ الحياةَ حيثُ

    تكونُ المدنيَّاتُ جُلّها تعذيب

    Except that life, where

    Urbanity is totally misery

  63. كلَّما استُحدثتْ ضروبُ أمانٍ

    أعقبتها من البلايا ضروب

    Every time securities are innovated

    It is followed by types of afflictions

  64. وكأنَّ السرورَ يُومِض برقاً

    من خِلال الغيومِ ثمَّ يَغيب

    And it's as though happiness flashes lightning

    Through the clouds then disappears

  65. لا ترى ثَمَّ – غيرَ أن يتركَ الحبُّ

    شحوباً – وجهاً علاهُ الشحوب

    You do not see - unless love leaves

    Pallor - a face shrouded in pallor

  66. ثمّ لاشيء عن سنا الشمس ممنوعٌ

    ولا عن طلاقةٍ محجوب

    Then nothing about the sun is forbidden

    Nor an eloquence withheld

  67. الهواءُ الهبَّابُ ، والنورُ ،

    والخضرةُ تأتي ما ليس يأتي الطبيب

    The fluttering air, and light

    And greenery bring what no doctor brings

  68. ثمّ باسمِ الحصادِ في كلّ حقلٍ

    تتناجى حبيبةٌ وحبيب

    Then in the name of harvest, in every field

    A lover and his beloved confer

  69. قال فردٌ منهمْ لأخرى وقد

    هَيَّجَ نفسيهما ربيعٌ خصيب

    One of them said to another when

    A fertile spring aroused them

  70. طابَ مَنشا زروعِنا فأجابت :

    إنَّ نشءاً يرعاهُ كْفءٌ يطيب

    Fine grew our crops, so she replied:

    A crop grazed by a fine herder thrives

  71. قال ما أصبرَ الحقولَ على الناسِ

    فقالتْ ومثلُهنَّ القلوب

    He said, how patient are the fields with people

    She said, and likewise are hearts

  72. إنّ ما تفعلُ المناجلُ فيها

    دونَ ما يفعلُ الشجا والوجيب

    What sickles do in them

    Not what pricks and blames do

  73. ينهضُ الزرعُ بعدَ حصدٍ وقد

    يُجتثُّ من أصله فؤادٌ كئيب

    The crop rises again after harvest though

    A gloomy heart may get uprooted

  74. يا فؤادي المكروبُ بعثرَكَ الهمُّ

    كما بُعثِرَ الثرى المكروب

    My gloomy heart fragmented by worries

    As the fragmented dusty earth

  75. وعيوني هلاّ نَضبتِ .. وقد ينضبُ

    من فرطِ ما يسيل القليب

    And my eyes, why haven't they dried up..when what

    Flows from the heart is plenty

  76. عندَهم منطقٌ هنالكَ للحبِّ

    جميلٌ وعندَهم أُسلوب

    They have a beautiful logic for love there

    And have a style

  77. ولهم في الغرامِ أَكْثَر ممّّا

    لسواهمْ مضايقٌ ودروب

    And they have in romance much more than

    Others, privation and avenues

  78. مُلَحٌ خُصصِّتْ لهم ونِكاتٌ

    ملؤهنَّ الإبداعُ والتهذيب

    Humor designated for them and jokes

    Filled with creativity and refinement

  79. ثَمَّ تحتَ الستارِ ممتَلكٌ بالحبِّ

    عفواً .. ومثلُه مغصوب

    Then beneath the cover possessed with love

    Freely..and likewise forcibly seized

  80. إنهمْ يُذنبونَ . ثم يقولون:

    محالٌ أنْ لا تكونَ ذُنوب

    They sin. Then say: impossible

    That there not be sins

  81. نحنُ نبتُ الطبيعةِ البِكرِ فينا

    حسناتٌ منها .. وفينا عيوب

    We are virgin nature's growth, so in us

    Good deeds..and in us faults

  82. بنتُنا وابنُنا معاً يرقُبانِ الزرعَ

    والضرعَ .. والضمير رقيب

    Our daughter and our son together watch the crop

    And livestock..and conscience is watcher

  83. ليس ندري ما يفعلانِ ولا نعلمُ

    عمَّا زُرّتْ عليه الجيوب

    We do not know what they do or know

    Of what the pockets were loaded with

  84. ما علينا ما غابَ عنَّا فعندَ

    اللهِ تُحصى مظاهرٌ وغيوب

    It is not upon us what is hidden from us, for with

    God all appearances and secrets are counted

  85. غيرَ أنَّا ندري وكنَّا شباباً

    نتصابى أنَّ الجمالَ جَذوب

    Except we know and we were youth

    Pretending that beauty lures

  86. والفتى ما استطاعَ مُندفِعٌ نحو

    الصباباتِ .. والفتاةُ لَعوب

    And the lad unable, inclined toward

    Maidens..and the girl playful

  87. بالتصابي يُذكي الشبابُ ويغتُّر

    كما بالرِّياح يُذكى اللهيب

    With pretense youth arouses and is fooled

    As with wind kindling is provoked

  88. ثمّ عندَ اللقاء يُعرفُ إن كان

    هنلكم " نجيبةٌ ..! " أو نجيب..

    Then upon meeting one knows whether she is

    "Najeeba..!" or Najeep

  89. إنّ بعضَ الرجال يبدو أمامَ الحبِّ

    صُلباً والأكثرون يذوب

    Some men seem before love

    Stern, while most melt

  90. والتجاريبُ علَّمتنا بأنّ المرءَ

    غِرٌّ يُقيمه التجريب

    And experiences taught that man

    Is naive, formed by experience

  91. ليس بِدعاً أن نَستريبَ ولكن

    نتمنىَّ ألاّ نرى ما يُريب

    There's no harm that we suspect but

    We wish not to see what makes suspicious

  92. ليس فينا والحمدُ للهِ حتى الآنَ

    بيتٌ " إناؤهُ مقلوب "

    There is not in us -Thank God- even now

    A household "its bucket overturned"

  93. فإذا كانَ ما نخافُ فهرقُ الدّمِ

    سهلٌ كما تُراقُ ذَنوب

    So if what we fear occurs, shedding blood

    Is easy as sins poured

  94. منطقٌ للعقولِ أقربُ ممَّا

    يدَّعيه أخو عَفافٍ مُريب

    A logic closer to minds than what

    A brother claiming chastity claims

  95. ولقد يرمزونَ " عنَّا " بأنَّا

    كلُّ ما في محيطنا مَثلوب

    And they sometimes allude "about us" that

    All in our ocean is filled

  96. فيقولون: قد تطيحُ من العارِ

    بيوتٌ .. وقد تثورُ حروب

    So they say: from shame houses may fall

    And wars may ignite

  97. والخَناسبَََََّةٌ علينا ولكن

    في القُرى كلُّ ناقصٍ مسبوب

    Yet upon us is spite but in villages

    Every deficient is locked away

  98. عندنا كالفتى " الخفيفِ " لئيمٌ

    وجبانٌ ، وغادرٌ ، وكذوب

    Among us like the "wicked lad" is mean

    And a coward, a traitor, and a liar

  99. يُخجِلُ الناسَ في القُرى أنَّ فرداً

    من أُلاءٍ عليهمُ محسوب

    Embarrassing people in villages that an individual

    From kin is counted upon them

  100. إنَّه من خصائص المدنيَّاتِ

    إليها شنارهُم منسوب

    It is of the characteristics urbanities

    That snobbery toward them is ascribed

  101. في القُرى يوسعوننا وصماتٍ

    مُخجِلٍ أمرها " البداةَ " مَعيب

    In villages they broaden our traits

    With shameful matters the "nomads" flaw

  102. فيقولونَ : كلُّ شيءٍ صريحٍ

    عندنا – عندكم خليطٌ مَشوب

    So they say: everything explicit

    By us - by you a mixed fluid

  103. شُوّشَتْ منكم وسيطتْ سِماتٌ

    ولُغاتٌ ولهجةٌ وحليب

    By you features were confused and intermingled

    Tongues, accents, and pronunciation

  104. إنَّكم من نماذجِ العَربِ الساطينَ

    ظُلماً عليهم تعريب..!

    You are from examples of pure Arabs

    Unjustly labeled Arabs!

  105. كجليبٍ من البضائعِ يأتيكم من

    العالمينَ وجةٌ جليب

    Like bundles of goods a foreigner comes to you

    From both worlds, stranger bundles

  106. هو منكمْ كالأهلِ في كلِّ شيءٍ

    وهو فينا عن كلِّ شيءٍ جنيب

    He is like family to you in everything

    Yet is by us in everything proper

  107. إنَّكم تمدحونَ خُبثاً وعدواناً

    وغدراً كأنما المرءُ ذيب

    You praise wickedness, hostility

    And betrayal as though one melting
