1. ما لهذي الطبيعةِ البكرِ غضبى

    أَلها أن تثور نَذرٌ يُوفّى

    What ails this virgin nature, so wrathful,

    As if she had made a vow she was bound to fulfill?

  2. أَبْرَقَتْ، ثم أَرْعدت، ثم أَلقت

    حِمْلَها تُوسِعُ البسيطةَ قَصْفا

    She flashed, then thundered, then unleashed

    Her burden to spread widely across the plain.

  3. زَحَمَتْ كلَّ ثَغْرةٍ .. واستباحتْ

    شُرُفات البُيوت صفّاً فصفّا

    She crammed every crevice and made free

    With the parapets of houses row after row.

  4. غَبَشٌ ناعمُ السنا وشفيفٌ

    من سديَم راضَ الدجى أن يَشفّا

    A gentle, lisping dust of the still of night

    That the gloom was pleased to heal.

  5. وكأن الغُيومَ فوق الجبال الخضرِ،

    فوق الأدواح يَرْفَعْنَ سَقفا

    It was as though the clouds were raising up

    Ceilings over the green mountains,

  6. وعَجاجٌ من الرَّذاذِ تنِثُّ العطرَ

    والدفءَ سمحةٌ منه وطفا

    And showers of rain scattering fragrance

    And warmth—a generosity from the clouds.

  7. وكأن الأمواجَ يُرْهِفْنَ سَمْعاً

    ويطارِحْنها الأناشيدَ عَزْفا

    And it was as though the waves were sharpening their hearing

    And singing their songs, melody after melody.

  8. صعِدتْ ما تشاءُ .. ثم ألاحت

    بجَناحينِ أَوشكا أن يزِفّا

    It rose as high as it pleased, then gleamed

    With wings about to unfold.

  9. طَبَقٌ تِلوُ آخرٍ ثم يُجلى

    وخروقٌ ما بينها ثم تُرفا

    Layer after layer then clears away

    With gaps between, then more layers form.

  10. وخَلَتْ باحةُ السما غيرَ رسمٍ

    لم يَلُحْ للعُيونِ حتى تعفّى

    And the sky's expanse took shapeless form

    Too vague for eyes until it cleared away.

  11. ثمَّةَ ازَّيَّنَتْ بأبدعِ ما وُشي

    حُسْنا، وقد تخير لطفا

    Then it was adorned with the most wondrous sights

    Beauty itself had chosen for their charm.

  12. حُلُمٌ لم تُوَفِّهِ العينُ رؤيا

    كَذَبَ الحرفُ أن يوفيه وَصْفا

    A dream the eye could not behold in full

    Beyond words to describe however they might strive.

  13. خِلْتُ في الجو ساحراً يبعث الخلقَ

    جديداً صوغاً، ونشراً، ولفّا

    I walked spellbound, bringing the world to life

    Anew in creation, scattering, twining.

  14. تتعرّى له الطبيعة عُجْباً

    وبلمْحٍ من ظِلِّه تتخفى

    Nature stripped naked, marveling,

    Then hid in a glance of its shadow.

  15. ثم يُلقي خضرَ الشُّفوف عليها

    ثم يرمي بِهِنَّ شفّاً فشفّا

    Then it cast the green of fronds over it

    And pelted it with leaves, leaves after leaves.

  16. وحنايا جِنٍّ كأن عليها

    من حفيف الرؤى غدائرَ وُحفا

    And hoopoes like sprites, their robes

    Rustling with visions, plaits and braids.

  17. بُدِّلَ الكونُ خِلْقةً فالعُتُل

    الضخمُ يبدو فيه الأشفّ، الأشفّا

    The universe was transformed, and huge

    Rocks seemed delicate, sheer delicate.

  18. وكأنَّ الحياةَ تُوحشُ نِصفاً

    من سماواتِها، وتُؤنسُ نِصفا

    And it was as though life terrified

    Half the heavens while gratifying the other half.

  19. وكأنَّ السُّفوح يَنْسَبْنَ ذُعراً

    وكأن الجبالَ يَزْحَفْنَ زحفا

    And it was as though the hills shuddered in fear

    And the mountains crawled, crawling ahead.

  20. وكأنَّ الحُجومَ ضُوعفن أَلْفاً

    من مقاييسها، وصُغِّرْنَ ألفا

    And it was as though the clouds were weakened

    To a fraction of their size, diminished, shrunk.

  21. كُتَلٌ تنبِض الحياة لِماماً

    في تضاريسها، ويُحْسَبْنَ غُلْفا

    Massifs pulsating with life, summits

    In their ridges, but seeming smooth, sheer smooth.

  22. أشْرق الفجرُ فوقَ " فرنا " فأَضْفَتْ

    فوقَهُ سحرَها الخفيَّ وأضفى

    Dawn rose above Furna adding

    Its mysterious charm, an added charm.

  23. واستطاب الرملُ النديُ بِساطاً

    فمشى ناعمَ الْخطى يَتَكفّا

    And the sandy shore enjoyed the carpet,

    Walking with gentle tread, lightly stepping.

  24. مُعْجَباً يَمْسَحُ الدُّجى منه عِطفاً

    ويُهزُّ الصبحُ المنورُ عِطْفا

    Marveling, wiping away the dew,

    As morning, bright morning, waved its greeting.

  25. وتوارى عاتٍ من " الزّنج " صفّى

    ما لديه من النُّجوم فأصفى

    A line of cormorants from Zanj withdrew,

    Selecting of its stars the most elite.

  26. وارتمى البحرُ عاصِفاً يلطِمُ السا

    حلَ حتى حَسِبْتهُ يَتَخفّى

    And the sea rushed tempestuously, pounding the coast,

    I thought it would hide itself completely.

  27. ونديمي وجهٌ صَبُوحٌ وكأسٌ

    غُودرت في مِزاجها الصرفِ صِرْفا

    My friend, a radiant face, and a glass

    Blended in its purity, sipped

  28. أحتسيها من لاعجِ الوَجْدِ عَبّاً

    وعلى رَفَّةِ الشِّفاه فَرَشْفا

    I drink it brimming with the wine of joy

    And spread on the lips, a taste spread.

  29. ثمّ دبّتْ بنا تُثَقِّلُ جَفْناً

    وتُصَفِّي نَفْساً، وتُرْعِشُ كفّا

    Then drowsiness crept into us, weighing down

    The eyelids and clearing the soul, trembling the palms.

  30. يا مَزيجاً من ألف كَونٍ تَرفّق

    إنّ كوناً على ذراعيكِ أَغْفى

    Oh blend of a thousand universes, be gentle,

    For on your arms a universe slumbers.

  31. قُتل الحسنُ ما أشدَّ على

    العيْنِ وُضوحاً، وما أدقَّ وأخفى

    Beauty is slain—how hard on the eye

    Its clarity, how subtle and slight.

  32. يُذْهِلُ النفسَ سحرُه .. ما تخطّى

    من معاييرِهِ .. وما تتقفّى

    It dazzles the soul ... no measure contains

    What it surpasses ... what it attains.

  33. أنت " إكْليكُ " يا طفيفاً من اللَّحم

    على العظم كاد أن يُستشفّاً

    You are Aphrodite, a wisp of flesh

    On bone that seemed about to be revealed.

  34. ألَّفَ " الفنُّ " صورةً منكِ تنا

    هت في الحسن لُطفاً وعُنفاً

    Art formed of you an image of perfect grace,

    Gentleness and passion mixed, blended.

  35. دَفَعَ الصدر دَفعةً أعجب

    النهدينِ منه طيبُ المُقام فرّفا

    The bosom thrust forward rousing

    The breasts to gracious response fluttering.

  36. الشَّهيانِ لُملِما فاستدارا

    فاستثارا، فاستضريا، فاستخفّا

    The fawns close together then wheeling apart,

    Inciting, igniting, scarcely still.

  37. وثنى طيّةً فضمَّرَ كَشْحاً

    ورأى فُسحةً فدوَّر خَلْفا

    And a bend, a hollow concealing

    An expanse, a turn, a glimpse behind.

  38. يا نديمي ولا يُخِفْكِ نديمٌ

    أَثْقَلَتْهُ سودُ الليالي فخفّا

    My friend, do not let a friend disturb you

    Whose spirit gloomy nights have weighed down.

  39. حُرِم العيشَ مُمتعاً .. فهو يُلفي

    مُتعةً منه نعمةً حيث تُلفى

    He is deprived of pleasurable life, so he steals

    Pleasure from it, seizing it where he finds it.

  40. يخطَفُ النبعَ بين ثَغْريكِ يخشى

    وعدَ صدقٍ من نبعه أن يجِفّا

    He grabs the spring between your lips, fearing

    The promise of that spring once sealed will vanish.

  41. وعد صدقٍ، وكلُّ وعدٍ صدوقٍ

    غيرِه .. طالما تحيَّن خُلْفا

    A true promise—yet every loyal promise is

    Other than it ... many times it mocks hopes.

  42. في دمي ثورةٌ على الموتِ تَكْفي

    أن تعفِّي عليه لو كان يكفى

    In my blood is revolt against death, enough

    To make it cease, if that were possible.

  43. ما ألذَّ الحياةَ لولا نهايا

    تُ مطافٍ ملآنَ رُعباً وسُخفا

    How sweet is life, if not for the endings

    Of feared journeys, filled with dread and murk.

  44. يَنْفَدُ العمرُ شدّ ما كان حَوْجاً

    كسِراجٍ في فحمةِ الليل يُطفا

    Life passes, however much it is needed,

    Like a lamp in the black night extinguished.

  45. ليتَ أنَّ الحِمام، إذ لم يكنْ بدٌ

    من الموت، علةٌ ثم تُشْفى

    Would that death—since it cannot be avoided—

    Were but an illness to heal us afterward,

  46. يجد المرءُ بعدَها العيشَ أحلى

    وهباتِ الدنيا ألذَّ وأَصْفى

    So man could find life after it even sweeter

    And the gifts of life more delicious and pure.

  47. أَفحتْمٌ .. وإن ثوى المرءُ ألفاً

    أن يُذرّى ذروَ الترابِ ويُعْفى

    Nonsense ... Though man lives a thousand years

    To be scattered at last as dust and nullified.

  48. فلمَ الزهرُ، والربيعُ ، وشدوٌ

    مثلُ سَجْعِ الحمام حلوٌ مقفى ؟!

    Why then the flowers, the spring, the music

    Like the coo of doves, sweet modulated cooing?

  49. ولِمَ الثلجُ، والشتاءُ وشُمٌّ

    من نُهودٍ بجمرِها يُتدفى ؟!

    And why the snow, the winter, and scent

    Of embers whose heat penetrates to the bones?

  50. ولمَ الصيفُ عارياً يتقاضى

    واجباتِ النفوس عُرياً وكشفا ؟!

    And why the summer, bare, demanding

    The dues of souls, stripped bare and exposed?

  51. ليت شعري والموتُ مثلُ عُقابِ

    الْجوِ يُدمِي بنا مخالبَ عُقفا

    Would that death were like punishment

    From the skies, clawing and flaying us!

  52. أَقرابينُ نحنُ شوهاءُ تُزْجى

    للإلهِ الغضبانِ قُربى وزُلْفى ؟

    Are we close relatives, disfigured, offered

    To the wrathful god as kith and kin?

  53. أمْ عقولٌ صنائعٌ سيطر الوهمُ

    عليها فرُحْن يَرْقُبن حَتْفا

    Or are we artifacts our delusions

    Lead to expect the final blow?

  54. أم ألاعيبُ من دُمى صُنعِ فذٍّ

    طوعُ كفّيهِ ما يُخَط ويُنْفى

    Or are we but marionettes deftly manipulated

    However their maker wills, destroys or creates?

  55. أم على الكوكبِ العجيبِ من

    الغيبِ رُصودٌ يُمْتِعنَ إلْفاً وإلفا

    Or on this wondrous sphere of the unseen

    Are there watchers entertaining themselves

  56. أن يعيشا عمرَ النُّجومِ وأن

    يستكفيا في الحياة ما ليسَ يُكفى ؟

    By living the lifetime of stars and taking

    From life what cannot suffice?

  57. يا نديمي .. وما غدٌ .. والليالي

    ثمرٌ يُشتَهَى فيُخطَف خَطْفا

    My friend ... what is tomorrow, and nights

    Are fruit craved then snatched away?

  58. يسخَراليومُ من غدٍ خائرَ الهمّة

    من كل ما يُعنِّيه يُعفَى

    Today scoffs at tomorrow, supine, careless

    Of all that concerns it, neglects.

  59. يُترجَّى ويُختَشَى ليس يُدرَى

    يُولَدُ الصُبح منه .. أم يُتوفَّى

    It is hoped for and feared, none can know

    Will morning be born of it or will it die?

  60. أنت " إكليكُ " ها هنا .. تملأين

    السمعَ والعينَ والأحاسيسَ لُطْفا

    You are Aphrodite, here, filling

    The hearing, the sight, the feelings with charm.

  61. أَتَملَّى عينيكِ عِرقاً فعِرقا

    وحديثاً سَجَعتِ حَرفاً فحرفا

    I reveled in your eyes, gazing,

    And speech—letters paired with letters.

  62. ووِشاحاً أضفيت ما اللونُ منه

    وجَديلاً صَفَفتِه كيف صُفّا

    A wrap you donned—what color it had!

    And a braid you plaited, how plaited!

  63. ولكم صانتِ الهَوى ذكرياتٌ

    هنَّ أبقَى ذِكراً، وأغنى، وأوفى

    And how many memories passion has preserved

    For you, lasting, enriching, fulfilling!
