1. طيفٌ تحدّرَ من وراء حجابِ

    غَضِرُ الترائبِ مُثقلُ الأهدابِ

    A vision descended from behind a veil

    Green of apparel, heavy of eyelid

  2. متفجرُ اليَنبوع يزخَرُ بالسَنا

    ويرُشُّ وجهَ الفجرِ بالأَطْيابِ

    A gushing spring overflowing with brilliance

    Sprinkling the face of dawn with perfume

  3. وكأنَّ ساحرةً تُرقِّصُ حوله

    أعطافَ أوديةٍ وهامَ روابي

    As though a sorceress dancing around it

    With the skirts of valleys and mounts of pastures

  4. وكأنّه مما يتيه بنفسه

    تِيهُ الحياة بزهوها المُنساب

    As though wandering in the wilderness of life

    Wandering in its exuberant glory

  5. طيفٌ تحدّر سَلْسَلاً ومظِنَّتي

    أنَّ الطيوفَ تعِنُّ لمحَ سراب

    A vision cascading like a mirage

    I imagined the visions to be a heat haze

  6. حلَمت به سودُ الليالي حِقبةً

    هي شرُّ ما زَرَعَت يد الأحقاب

    The dark nights dreamed of him for ages

    The worst of what the hand of eons sowed

  7. ثقلُ الرصاصِ وئيُدها، ووجيفُها

    بِشُواظ نارٍ، أو بسوط عذاب

    The weight of bullets was its bridle, and its carcass

    Was with flames of fire, or a whip of torment

  8. حلَمت به ... وأبى عليها مثلَما

    حلم المشيبُ برجعةٍ لشباب

    It dreamed of him...and refused what graying hair

    Dreamed of a return to youth

  9. حتى إذا بلَغَ المدى أشواطَه

    ملآنَ من رَهَقٍ ومن أوصاب

    Until when he reached the end of his journey

    Weary and overburdened

  10. وتسابقت فيه المنايا رُكَّضاً

    كتراكض الأفراس يومَ غِلاب

    And death raced within him galloping

    Like horses racing on a day of defeat

  11. وتساقتِ الدمَ والدموعَ أُخوَّةٌ

    ألفَتْهما نَخْباً من الأنخاب

    Blood and tears flowed as siblings

    United by the elite of martyrs

  12. وتراجفت زُهرُ النجوم لهُولةٍ

    قاني الضفائرِ، أسودِ الجِلباب

    The blossoms of stars shuddered in horror

    At he who dons braids, clad in black attire

  13. إنسٌ كأنَّ الوحشَ ألقى نحوَه

    ما شاءَ من ظُفُرٍ لديه وناب

    A man as though beasts had unleashed on him

    All their claws and fangs

  14. متمزِّقٌ بيَدَيه يأكلُ لحمَه

    ويعافُ فضلةَ زادِه للغاب

    Tearing his flesh with his hands and leaving

    The remnants of his food for the jungle

  15. حتى إذا اليأسُ استشاطَ مُطَوِّحاً

    برجاء حُمْسٍ مؤمنينَ غِضاب

    Until when despair raved violently

    At the hope of steadfast, wrathful believers

  16. شَدُّوا إلى قَدَرٍ هَزولٍ لاعبٍ

    كتلاعب الصبيانِ بالدُولاب

    They inclined toward a fickle, playful destiny

    Like children playing with a spinning top

  17. وتَوجّسوا من كلِّ صدقٍ خِيفةً

    من فَرط ما صُلِبوا على كِذّاب

    And they doubted all truth in fear

    Of how deeply they were crucified by liars

  18. حتى إذا غزتِ العيونَ كآبةٌ

    من مَزحَفٍ كدِرٍ، وجوٍّ كابي

    Until when sorrow flooded the eyes

    From a creeping, turbid atmosphere

  19. وترصَّدَت خَلَلَ الغيومِ زواحفاً

    نِسراً يمزِّق من جَناح غُراب

    And lurking reptiles watched through the clouds

    An eagle shredding the wing of a crow

  20. أسرى إلى الشكِّ اليقينُ يهزُّه

    كالفجر يزحف من شقوق الباب

    Certainty crept to shake uncertainty

    Like dawn creeping through cracks in the door

  21. ثم استفاض يصكُ سمعَ مشكِّكٍ

    فيه، ويدمغ ريبةَ المرتاب

    Then it spread, battering the hearing of a skeptic

    In it, and stamping the doubts of the doubtful

  22. وتلَقّفَتْهُ ليلةٌ مذخورةٌ

    لأوانها . محصيّةٌ بكتاب

    And a blessed night embraced it

    At its time, recorded in the Book

  23. محسودةٌ حسدَ الفصولِ ربيعَها

    أو حرقةَ الشوهاءِ بين كِعاب

    Envied is its springtime by the seasons

    Or the burning of the ugly among sheep

  24. يا أيُّها الشيخُ الرئيس تحيةً

    هي في صميم الودِّ والإعجاب

    O eminent Sheikh, greetings

    Deep in affection and admiration

  25. لكَ عن جميل الصنع قد أسديتَه

    كفوٌ لكل كريمةٍ وثواب

    For your good work you have given generously

    Worthy of each noble deed and reward

  26. وعلى جسيمِ الأمرِ قد أنجزتَه

    لا بالنَكولِ به، ولا الهيّاب

    And you accomplished this momentous matter

    Without refusing or fearing it

  27. كنت المُهيبَ بأن تُقرِّبَ ساعةً

    ما اسطعتَ من يومٍ أغرَّ مُهاب

    You awed that you would bring closer an hour

    That you have not shone from a day more splendid

  28. أفرغتَ أطماحَ العراق وأهلِه

    جسداً أفضت عليه خيرَ إهاب

    You fulfilled Iraq’s aspirations and people

    A body you have poured upon it the best attire

  29. ونفختَ في أملٍ حياةً حلوةً

    ووضعت شاخصها بخير نصاب

    And you breathed life into a sweet hope

    And placed its guide with the best composition

  30. وأحلتَ عن بؤسٍ نعيماً رفرفاً

    ونتجت روضاً عن دمٍ وتراب

    And removed distress to bestow fluttering bliss

    And produced a meadow from blood and dust

  31. ودعوت حزبكَ أن يبادر مغنماً

    هو من طِلاب الخمسةِ الأحزاب

    And called on your party to gain spoils

    It is of those seeking the five parties

  32. وأقلُّ حبوةِ مانح قولُ الفتى:

    سلِمت يمينُ المانحِ الوهّاب

    And the youth’s statement of a giver’s littlest seed is:

    The hand of the Giver arrived safely

  33. رُمْتَ العسيرَ فكنتَ أصدقَ شاهدٍ

    أنْ ليسَ من عَسِرٍ على طَلاّب

    You accomplished the difficult so you were the most truthful witness

    That nothing is difficult upon seekers

  34. هممُ الرجال قريبةٌ من بعضها

    أنى تكونُ .. لصيقةُ الأنساب

    The ambitions of men are close to one another

    However they are...adjoined lineages

  35. وتجاوبُ الرَغَبَاتِ في ذِرَواتها

    أمضى وأسرعُ من سنىً جوّاب

    And reciprocated desires in their pursuits

    Are firmer and swifter than the orbits

  36. ولقد يُجاء من الضمير لِصنوهِ

    في رمشةٍ برسالةٍ وجواب

    And the conscience can be came upon to guard it

    In a blink with a message and response

  37. مرحى ليوم " الظافرين " ومرحباً

    بمخاصمين أعزّةٍ أحباب

    A refuge on the day of “the victors” and welcome

    To intimate adversaries, beloved friends

  38. متجانفين برغمهم فقلوبُهم

    كُشُفٌ ضواحكُ، والوجوهُ نوابي

    Estranged, though their hearts are

    Revealed smiles, and brightened faces

  39. ألغى مسافة بينهم ما أُشربوا

    من حبِّ هذي التربة المِخصاب

    A shared love of this fertile soil dissolved

    The distance between them, their bones are mixed in it

  40. خُلطت عظامُهم بها، وتعاطفت

    فيها صدورُهم على الأعقاب

    And their hearts sympathized in it over time

    And their graves are scattered in it, thus to them

  41. وتناثرت فيها القبورُ فعندهم

    في كل دار قِبلةُ المحراب

    In every house is the direction of prayer

    How monstrous is man - civilization did not drive him

  42. ما أفظعَ الإنسان لم يدفع به

    زخمُ الحياةِ بموجِها الصخّاب

    From the momentum of life in its tumultuous wave

    He did not cease despite a suspicious civilization

  43. ما انفكَّ رغم حضارةٍ مشبوهةٍ

    مُغرىً بذبحٍ، مُولعاً بخراب

    Tempted by slaughter, obsessed with ruin

    Vilely disfiguring a green oasis

  44. خزيانَ يمسخ بقعة مخضرّةً

    بُقعَ الدماءِ على الرماد الكابي

    With blood stains on the dusty ashes

    Accursed are iniquitous eras that left behind

  45. لُعِنَتْ عهودٌ آثماتٌ خلفَها

    من لعنة الأجيال شرُّ عِقاب

    A curse from generations, the worst punishment

    The reins had nearly slipped and chaos coursed

  46. قد كادَ ينفلتُ الزمامُ ويدَّحي

    ركبُ العراق لهَلْكةٍ وتَباب

    Through Iraq toward destruction and waste

    The skies clouded over it except for fleeting glimpses

  47. غامت به الأجواء إلا زِبرِجاً

    زَيْفاً، كصبغةِ لِمَّةٍ بخضاب

    Like a false dye, like the dying of garments

    And barrenness walked about until it craved

  48. ومشى بها الإجدابُ حتى استعذبت

    سنةً تطوف بها من الإخصاب

    A year circulating around it with fertility

    And it felt lonely until it forgot a paradise

  49. واستوحشتْ حتى تناستْ جنّةً

    كانت تظلّلُها . . لفرط يباب

    That had shaded it...due to abundant drought

    And the vision of a generous future darkened

  50. ودجا غدٌ، وهوت معالمُ رؤيةٍ

    سمحاءَ إلا من خلال ضَباب

    Except from afar through mist

    And the poisons of resentments crept into souls

  51. ومَشَت سُمومُ ضَغائنٍ في أنفُسٍ

    ومجالسٍ، ورسالةٍ، وكتاب

    And gatherings, and letters, and books

    An infant had nearly suckled it innocently

  52. قد كاد يرضعها الوليدُ براءةً

    ويقيئُها حقداً على الأتراب

    And vomited it as hatred onto kindred

    And history cried out from what a deviant falsifier

  53. وتصارخ التأريخُ مما شوَّهت

    منه يَراعةُ مارقٍ نصّاب

    Had disfigured it, the caution of a pimp

    If it were said what deceit - the punishment of its Lord

  54. لو قيل ما غِشٌ عقوبةُ ربّه

    موتٌ، لقلتُ غَشاشة الكتاب

    Is death - I would say the deception of the Book

    And letters have often cursed those it revealed

  55. ولطالما لعنت ذويها أحرفٌ

    قامت لعورتهم مَقام ثياب

    Standing in place of their clothes

    I called on my devil, so he responded best

  56. ناديت شيطاني فأحسَنَ جابةً

    وهو المعاصي سيِّدَ الأرباب

    Though he is the master of sins and lords

    O captivator of minds, bring your orphan

  57. يا خالبَ الألبابِ جيءْ بيتيمةٍ

    هي من وَلائدِ سحرِكَ الخلاّب

    She is of the offspring of your alluring sorcery

    So fly and show no mercy there flying

  58. حلِّقْ ولا ترحمْ هناك محلّقا

    حتى تجرِّره على الأعتاب

    Until you drag him upon the doorsteps

    Be O radiant light that shines of itself

  59. كن أيها النورُ المضيءُ بنفسه

    في مِهرجان الحقِّ فصلَ خطاب

    In the festival of truth, the supreme discourse

    Sing Iraq with the best you have been inspired

  60. غنِّ العراقَ بخير ما لُقنتَه

    من " موصِليَّيه " .. ومن " زِرياب "

    From "Moslawiyyeh" and from "Ziryab"

    Be O radiant light an eternal galaxy

  61. كن أيُّها النورُ المضيء مجرّةً

    أبداً تمور بألفِ ألفِ شهاب

    Forever swirling with thousands of meteors

    And light the paths of poetry, for its paths

  62. وأنِرْ دُروبَ الشعر إنَّ دروبَه

    إن أنت لم تنهض بهنَّ كوابي

    If you do not arise, are winding

    And be the guide to consciences, leading them

  63. وكنِ الدليلَ على الضمائر تَهْدِها

    سُبلَ اللُّغى، ومحَجَّة الإعراب

    The ways of language, and the authority of grammar

    And make "the paradises of imagination" my hobby

  64. واجعلْ " فراديسَ الخيالِ " هوايتي

    وهوى عرائسهنَّ من آرابي

    And the love of its brides from places of rest

    Shape the letters into wonders and make them forget

  65. وصُغِ الحروفَ عجائباً وتَناسَها

    حتى كأنَّك لم تجئْ بعُجاب

    As though you had not come with wonders

    Seventy years and nights, giving birth

  66. سبعونَ عاماً والليالي، مُخَّضاً

    طلَقاً، يلدنَك بعد طولِ عذاب

    Openly, birthing you after prolonged agony

    Your charms were rallied to please me

  67. حُشِدتْ لإرضائي فتونُك كلُّها

    وكأنَّها حُشِدتْ على إغضابي

    As though rallied to provoke my wrath

    I called on my devil, so he responded best

  68. نهبَ الزعازع، شارداً، متحرقاً

    لبناء بيتٍ مُحكم الأطناب

    And to you belongs the beauty of rhyme and reward

    From the sharpness of your might and its whetting

  69. وتكادُ تنطِفُ من رِباط حروفه

    بُقْيا جراحٍ ينتَزفْنَ رِغاب

    From the weaving of the armor of the unyielding hero

    I remained steadfast until when exhaustion from

  70. ما أفسَدَ الأوتارَ في فَمِ شاعرٍ

    حتى يشُدَّ بها على الأعصاب

    The misery of expatriation, the humiliation of terror, sufficed me

    And today I cast my lot with the redeemers

  71. يومَ الشمال وأنت من تَطلابي

    وإليكَ من عشرينَ كان خِطابي

    And upon the reward of the Givers, my reward

    On the day of the North, and not only your day

  72. لم تُزو عن عيني رُؤاك ولا خَلَت

    شفتايَ من نَغَمٍ ومن تَطراب

    Is the day of every region and approach

    It is the day of the folk of poetry and literature

  73. قد كنتُ منك ولستُ أبرَح قِطعةً

    وهواك ظلَّ على المدى من دابي

    And the affinity of the axes and axes

    It is the day of Iraq's weddings, from what dripped

  74. ناغَيتُ أعشاش النُسور كأنّها

    فوق القِبابِ نماذجٌ لِقباب

    From a cloudburst like ample torrents

    It is "Baghdad's Day" coinciding with the Tigris in it

  75. وعلوتُ أسنِمةَ الجبال وخلتُني

    منهنَّ ممتطياً مُتونَ سَحاب

    The Euphrates "in abundant cups"

    She was your partner in all your afflictions

  76. وسمِعتُ همهمةَ الرياح مُبينةً

    عمّا بها، وكأنّه عمّا بي

    And the ally of your soul in penetrating agony

    Burning in night and day

  77. ولممَتُ من آداب أهلِكِ باقةً

    نُثِرَتْ براعِمُها على آدابي

    Branched in food and drink

    As though she shared the pillows that lifted

  78. وجنتْ يدايَ قُطوفَها، وترنَّحَت

    قدماي في سُوحٍ له وشِعاب

    What lifted your pillows of swords

    She saw the inheritance divided between them

  79. وخطفت همساً من نجاوى صبوةٍ

    رَفلٍ كأنداء الصباح عِذاب

    Plunder of dark disasters like captives

    And shreds of a throbbing, subtle history

  80. خَلَجاتُ أحلامٍ، كأنَّ رفيفَها

    هَمْسُ الربيع لروضةٍ مِعشاب

    Pieces that tear with them like the tearing of necks

    For companionship in joys is an easier outlet

  81. ورؤى تَمازَجُ لا تُبينُ كصَحْوةٍ

    في غَفْوةٍ، أو حَضْرةٍ بغيَاب

    In an intimacy than companionship in affliction

  82. يومَ الشمال وفي ضَخامةِ باعثٍ

    عُذْرٌ يقومُ بتُهمةِ الإطناب

  83. أنا في رِكابِ الشعرِ ما لم أَحدُه

    فإذا حَدَوتُ فإنَّه برِكابي

  84. صُغْتُ القوفي فيكَ أنتَ مُثارهُا

    وإليكَ حُسنُ مَردَّةٍ ومَثاب

  85. من حُرِّ بأسِكَ وقدُها، ونسيجُها

    من نَسجِ درع المستميتِ الآبي

  86. ووَفَيتُ حتى إذ كفاني مَوْهنا

    بؤسُ التغرُّب ذلّةَ الإرهاب

  87. واليومَ أُلقي للفداة بِحصّتي

    وعلى ثَواب الواهبين ثَوابي

  88. يومَ الشَمال وليسَ يومَك وحدَه

    هو يومُ كلِّ محَلةٍ وجَناب

  89. هو يومُ رَهْطِ الشِّعر والآداب

    وتلاحُمِ الأقطاب والأقطاب

  90. هو يَومُ أعراسِ العِراق بما انجَلَتْ

    من غَمْرة كالعِثْيَر المُنجاب

  91. هو " يومُ بغدادٍ " يُصافِقُ دجلةً

    فيها ط الفراتُ " بمُتْرَع الأكواب

  92. كانتْ شريكَك في بلائِكَ كلِّه

    وحَليفَ روحِك في الأذَى المُنتاب

  93. حَرّانةً في ليلةٍ ونَهارِها

    غصّانةً في مَطْعَم وشَراب

  94. وكأنَّما كانتْ يُقِضُّ وِسادَها

    ما في وِسادكَ من رُؤوسِ حِراب

  95. كانت تَرَى الإرْثَ المقسَّم بينَها

    نَهْبَ الخُطوبِ السُودِ كالأسلاب

  96. وشِعافَ تاريخٍ لُبابٍ نابضٍ

    قِطعاً يَحُزُّ بها كَحَزِّ رِقاب

  97. ولَشِرْكةُ الأفراح أهونُ مَنفَذاً

    في أُلْفةٍ من شِرْكةٍ بمُصاب
