1. رَبَأتُ بنفسي ان تظل كما هيا

    تُرَجِّي سراباً او تخافُ دواهيا

    I raised myself not to remain as it was

    Awaiting a mirage or fearing pitfalls

  2. واكبرتُ أني لا ازالُ دريئة

    يجرب فيها المُغرضون المراميا

    And I grew up not to continue being gentle

    With which the malicious would try their luck

  3. نظائرُ مما احكم الغدرُ نسجَها

    تذكِّرُني ما كنتُ بالأمس ناسيا

    The likes of what treachery has perfectly woven

    Remind me of what I was oblivious to yesterday

  4. تجاريبُ لم أنعُم بعُقبى احتمالِها

    على أن عندي غيرَها ما كفانيا

    Experiences I did not have the patience to endure

    While I have enough other things that suffice me

  5. فلم ألف من خيرٍ ونُصح مُعوِّضاً

    لأحمدَ عن شَرٍّ وغدرٍ جوازيا

    So I did not find any good or advice that compensates

    For the evil and betrayal I received

  6. كَفَى مُخبراً بي ان تكونَ مطامحي

    مباهجَ أقوام تجيءُ ورائيا

    It suffices to inform me that my ambitions are

    The joys of people who come after me

  7. ولم أرَ الا انني غيرَ منطوٍ

    على خِسّة لما ابتغيتُ الدواعيا

    And I saw nothing but that I am not suited

    To the meanness which I sought to obtain

  8. إذا ما أدَرت الفكر فيما ارومُه

    وما أبتغيه ان يكون مثاليا

    Whenever I reflect on what I intend

    And want it to be ideal

  9. وفي حالةٍ أُرغِمتُ ان أصطلي بها

    مُحَلِّقَ نفسٍ عاثرَ الجد كابيا

    And in a situation I was forced to wear it

    A stumbling soul, failure, and shame

  10. رثَيتُ نفوسَ الشاعرين طموحةً

    أريدُ لها ان تستَذلَّ جواثيا

    I pitied the souls of the ambitious poets

    I want them to be humbled to the ground

  11. عجِبْتُ لشعبٍ يُنجبُ الفَرد نَابغاً

    حريقاً ، حصيفاً ، واثب النفس واعيا

    I was amazed by a people who beget an eminent individual

    A passionate, wise, energetic and aware person

  12. يريد له نهجاً من المجد لاحِباً

    وعصراً به يشأى العصورَ الزواهيا

    Who wants for him a path of glory not loving

    And an era in which he wants eras to pass

  13. يُزيل الشباب الرِخوَ عن مُستقرِّهِ

    ويدفعه دفعَ الأتيِّ الجواريا

    Who removes laziness from its place

    And pushes it like a strong wind

  14. ويرهق بالتفكير نفساً عزيزةً

    ليُعتِقَ رِقّاً او ليُرشدَ غاويا

    And strains the dear soul with thinking

    To free a slave or guide one who is lost

  15. ويستنهض الارواحَ غُفلاً مؤثِّلاً

    قوادِمَه من شعره والخوافيا

    And provokes oblivious spirits

    With its poetry and hidden meanings

  16. له كلَّ يوم قطعةٌ من فؤادِه

    يُساقطها للناشئين قوافيا

    Every day he sacrifices a piece of his heart

    Casting it to the youth as rhymes

  17. ولا سائلٌ عن ليلة كيف باته

    ولا كيف لاقى الصبحَ اسودَ داجيا

    Without anyone asking how his night passed

    Or how he met the morning, dark and gloomy

  18. تشكَّى الطموحَ من مُحيطٍ أجاعه

    فاطعمتُه غُرَّ القوافي دواميا

    Ambition complained about a barren sea so

    I fed it the bitterness of rhymes constantly

  19. وما هي بالشكوى ولكن أثارة

    وقد يُحسَب الليثُ المزمجرُ شاكيا

    It is not complaining but provoking

    The roaring lion may seem complaining

  20. لعَنْتُ الضميرَ الحرّ لعنةَ غاضبٍ

    رأي الغُنْم محموداً فذمَّ التفاديا

    I cursed the free conscience, the curse of an angry person

    Who sees obedience as praiseworthy so defames avoidance

  21. لقد كنتُ عما اصطلي في كِفاية

    لو انيَ كنتَ المستغِلَّ المُحابيا

    I was self-sufficient in what I mixed with

    If I were the exploiter and the one who flatters

  22. وقد كنت في بحبوحة لو عَدِمتُه

    شعوراً حباني العُدمَ فيما حبانيا

    And I would have been comfortable if I lacked it

    A feeling that non-existence granted me in what it granted me

  23. لعمريَ أني سَوف اختطُّ خُطّة

    تُضاعف دائي أو تكونُ دوائيا

    By my life I will outline a plan

    That doubles my affliction or becomes my remedy

  24. وسوفَ أُري الايامَ نقمةَ حاقدٍ

    اذا ما تقاضاها أساءَ التقاضيا

    And I will show the days the vengeance of a hater

    If he demanded it and did injustice in the demand

  25. وما أبتغي رَدَّ العوادي منيخةً

    على يدِ من يُزجِي إليَّ العواديا

    I do not want placid fate to return

    At the hands of one who stirs it up against me

  26. ولكن بكفٍّ علَّمَ الزندُ كفَّها

    مُقارعَةً او يسقطُ الزندُ واهيا

    But with a palm that taught its palm

    To fight or the palm falls weak

  27. ألا هل أراني مُرسِلاً في شكيمتي

    تُصرَّف كفّي كيف شاءت عنانيا

    Can I see myself sending into my temperament

    My hands doing as they wish aimlessly?

  28. اذنْ لاستشَفَّ الناسُ نفساً تجلببتْ

    غباراً يغطي اقتمَ الريشِ بازيا

    Then let people uncover a soul that was covered

    With dust covering the honored feathers

  29. وجدتُ دواءً في الصراحة ناجعاً

    إذا افتَقَدتْ نفسي طبيباً مُداويا

    I found a useful cure in honesty

    When my soul lacked a healing doctor

  30. وقد كان سِلمٌ في التغابي وراحةٌ

    بقلبي لو أنّي أطَقتُ التغابيا

    There was a ladder in evasion and serenity

    In my heart if I let go of evasion

  31. حباني العراق السمحُ أحسنَ ما حبا

    به شاعراً للحق والعدل داعيا

    Iraq's generosity granted me the best it grants

    A poet of truth and justice calling

  32. وجاء كما استمطرتُ في الصيف مزنةً

    وعيشاً كما اسأرتُ في الكأسِ باقيا

    It came to me like rain I wished for in summer

    And livelihood like I wished for in the cup remaining

  33. وعيشاً إذا استعرضته قلت عنده :

    " كفى بك داء ان تَرىَ الموت شافيا"

    A livelihood that if I survey it I say about it:

    "It is enough of an affliction to see death as healing"

  34. وأوعدني بعد المماتِ احتفاءةً

    يجوِّدُ فيها المُنشدون المراثيا

    And it promised me after death a celebration

    In which singers generously sing elegies

  35. وحَفْلاً ترى فيه اكُفّاً تعجَّلَت

    ظِمائيَ تستسقي عليّ الغواديا

    And a banquet in which you see palms that hastened

    My thirst, drawing the rivers upon me

  36. وتلك " يد " أعيا لساني وفاؤها

    فاوصيتُ اولادي بها وعياليا!

    That is a "hand" my tongue fell short of thanking

    So I instructed my children and dependents about it

  37. وان " فراتاً " للكفيءُ بشكرها

    اذا مِتُ فليردُدْ عليها العواديا

    And that "Euphrates" is equal to thanking it

    If I die let it repeat the rivers upon it

  38. مَضَت زَهرةُ العمر التي يحسبونَها

    هي العمرُ لا عُوداً مع الشيب ذاويا

    The flower of life which they think

    Is life, not firewood that decays with old age

  39. وراجعت في هذا السجل فصولَه

    اقلِّبُ اياماً به ولياليا

    And I reviewed its chapters in this register

    Turning days in it and nights

  40. أحاسِب نفسي كيف ألفَتْ يبيسة

    ضروعاً سقت وغداً ، وغِرّاً ، وجافيا

    I judge myself how an arid land had become accustomed

    To watering it, and tomorrow, and a barren, waterless land

  41. وعما أفادت من بلادٍ تكالَبَتْ

    على الغُنم ، وارتدَّت سِباعاً ضواريا

    And what it benefited from countries that attacked

    The sheep, and turned into preying beasts

  42. الم تجِدي والدهرُ نشوانُ طالِعٌ

    على الناس بالأفراح إلاّ المآسيا

    Does time amuse you while the ascendant

    Brings people nothing but sorrows?

  43. يقصُّون احوالََ الحياة تمتُّعاً

    وأنتِ تقصيِّن الحياة أمانيا

    They recount the states of life as enjoyment

    While you recount life as wishes

  44. ولمّا أبَتْ عُذراً يقوم بحالها

    مَضَت تدَّعي إن لم تُجَلبَبْ مخازيا

    And when it refused an excuse to stand on its own

    It passed claiming defeat if it does not wear rags

  45. محاذيرُ يسترضي المغرِّرُ نفسَه

    بها ويُخلِّيها جَسورٌ تحاشيا

    Precautions with which the deceiver appeases himself

    And recklessness leaves him avoiding them

  46. ولا خيرَ في بَغيٍ تحاول نيلَها

    إذا لم يُنهِكْ بيِّنَ البطش عاتيا

    And there is no good in rebellion you attempt

    If exhaustion did not bow to the tyranny of separation

  47. ولم يَعدُ في قصدي ولا سدَّ مذهبي

    ولم يُنهِكْ الصبرَ المملِّ اعتزاميا

    And no longer obstructs my purpose or blocks my path

    And exhaustion did not bow the persevering determination

  48. لئن كرهتْ مني الحضارةُ ناقماً

    فقد حَمِدتْ مني البداوةُ باديا

    If civilization hated me as an enemy

    Then nomadic life praised me as a nomad

  49. صَبوراً على بأسائِها لا يخالُها

    اشدَّ أذى من أن يُداري اعاديا

    Patient with its afflictions, not thinking it

    More painful than having enemies

  50. ولكنَّني آسَي لأخلاق عصبة

    تعُدُّ المزايا الطيباتِ مساويا

    But I grieve for the morals of a group

    Who count good traits as equal

  51. ترى كل مَرهوبِ الشَذاة عدوَّها

    وكلِّ رخيِّ العودِ خِلاٍّ مُصافيا

    It sees every audacious dissident as its enemy

    And every easy, pliant person as an ally

  52. وهذا بلاء يُمطر الشرَّ منذراً

    وهذا وباءٌ يَجرف الشَعب غاشِيا

    This is an affliction that rains evil as a warning

    And this is an epidemic that floods the people overwhelmingly
