1. دعِ النُبلَ للعاجز القُعْدَدِ

    وما اسطعتَ من مَغنمٍ فازْدَدِ

    Let nobility be for the helpless coward,

    And cease any glimmering spoils you've acquired,

  2. ولا تُخْدَعَنَّ بقولِ الضِعافِ

    من الناس أنّك عَفُّ اليد

    And be not fooled by the words of the weak,

    Claiming you are tight-fisted

  3. وأنك في العيش لا تقتفي

    خطا الأدنياءِ ولا تقتدي

    And your life does not emulate

    The path of the lowly, nor their ways.

  4. سفاسفُ تضحك من أمرها

    صرامةُ ذي القوةِ الأيّد

    The trifles laugh at their affair,

    While the strong keep a stern gaze,

  5. فلا تغد طوعاً لأمثالها

    متى ما تُغرَّرْ بها تَنْقَد

    So submit not to the likes of them,

    Should you be tempted by guile someday.

  6. ولا تَبْقَ وحدَكَ في حِطّة

    ومهما يكن سلّمٌ فاصعد

    Remain not alone in disgrace,

    Climb high whatever ladder there may be.

  7. فانك لو كنت محضَ الاباء

    ومحضَ الشهامة والسُّودَد

    For even if your lineage were pure,

    And you courage and nobility defined,

  8. وأصْدَقُ في القول من هُدْهُدٍ

    وأخشنُ في الحق من جلمد

    More truthful than the ringdove in speech,

    And tougher than solid ice in truth,

  9. وأعطيتَ في الخلق طُهرَ الغمام

    وفي الفضل منزلةَ الفرقد

    You gave the creation the purity of clouds,

    And in merit the rank of a lone planet,

  10. شريفاً تشير إليك الأكفُّ

    وتُنْعَتُ بالعَلَمِ المُفْرَد

    An honourable man fingers point to,

    And who is titled with an unmatched flag,

  11. لما زاد حظُّك من عِيشة

    على حظّ ذي العاهةِ المُقْعَد

    When your share of livelihood,

    Exceeds that of the lame beggar,

  12. إليكَ النصيحةَ من مُصْطَلٍ

    بنار التجارب مُستَحْصِد

    Advice comes to you from an earnest friend,

    Refined through the fire of experience,

  13. ستطلُبُها عند عضّ الخطوب

    عليك بأنيابها الحرّد

    You will seek it when faced with calamities,

    Baring its sharp canines to rip and shred.

  14. رِدِ العيشَ مزدحمَ الضِفَّتَيْنِ

    من الغِشّ ملتحمَ المورد

    Make your crowded life on both sides,

    Free of deceit at the watering hole,

  15. ملياً بذي قوة يَسْتقي

    وذي عِفّةٍ مستضامٍ صدي

    Filled with strong arms that draw,

    And chaste ones that firmly resist.

  16. وجُلْ فيه أروغَ من ثعلبٍ

    وأشجعَ من ضيغمٍ مُلْبِد

    Be a crafty fox within it,

    And a bold untiring lion.

  17. وكن رجلَ الساعةِ المجتبَى

    من اليوم ما يرتجى في غد

    Be the ideal man of the time,

    Hopeful of what comes tomorrow,

  18. وإلا فإنّك من منكد

    من العيش تمشي إلى أنكد

    Lest you become depressed,

    Dragging through the worst of lives,

  19. ذليلاً متى تمضِ لا يُبتأسْ

    عليك وإن تبقَ لا تُنْشَد

    Humiliated if you walk on,

    Unmissed if you remain behind.

  20. وأنت إذا لم تماش الظروفَ

    على كل نقص حريبٍ ردي

    If you don't make circumstances

    Suit you whatever the flawed harm,

  21. إذا ما مخضتَ نفوسَ الرجالِ

    من الأقربين إلى الأبعد

    When you churn the souls of men,

    From loved ones to the most estranged,

  22. وأوقفتَ نفسك للمدعين

    سموّ المقاصدِ بالمرصد

    And pause your soul to scrutinize,

    Lofty claims from an observatory,

  23. تيقنتَ أن الذي يدّعون

    من المجد للآن لم يُولَد

    You will know that what they claim,

    Of glory, is yet to be born.

  24. هم الناسُ لا يفضُلون الوحوشَ

    بغير التحيُّلِ للمقْصِد

    They are people, no better than beasts,

    Without cunning seeking their aim,

  25. فلا تأتِ ساحةَ هذي الذئابِ

    تُنازِلُها بفمٍ أدرد

    So come not to the court of these wolves,

    Matching them in reckless chatter.

  26. وخذ مخلباً لك من غَدْرَةٍ

    وناباً من الكِذْبِ فاستأسد

    Take instead claws for yourself,

    And fangs of lies, and become a lion.

  27. ولا تتديَّنْ بغير الرّياءِ

    وغَيْرَ النفاق فلا تعبُد

    Feign no devotion but hypocrisy,

    No faith but deception in your worship.

  28. وصلِّ على سائرِ الموبقاتِ

    صلاةَ المُحالِفِ للمسجد

    Pray over all taboos,

    As an oath-breaker swears at the mosque.

  29. وما اسطعت فاقطع يد المُعْتَدَي

    عليه وقبّلْ يدَ المُعتَدي

    Repay any injustice you see,

    With forgiveness for the unjust.

  30. ومجّدْ وضيعاً بهذي الهِنات

    تحدّى مكانهَ ذي المَحتِد

    Glorify the lowly with disgraces,

    That dare question one's due esteem.

  31. ونفسَك في النفع لا تبلُها

    وعَقْلَكَ في الخير لا تُجهِد

    Spare not your soul in benefaction,

    Nor tax your mind in doing good.

  32. يغطّي على شَرَفِ المنتَمى

    ويسحق من عزّة المَوْلِد

    It will hide the pride of ancestry,

    And crush the dignity of birth.

  33. ويقضي على مُطْرِفِ المكرُمات

    ويأتي على الحَسَب المُتلد

    It will destroy the edge of honours,

    And undo legitimate acclaim -

  34. مهارشةَ الواغلِ المدّعي

    وتهويشةَ المُغْرِضِ المُفسِد

    The blather of an unjust claimant,

    And the nonsense of a corrupt bigot.

  35. أقول لنفسي وقد عربدتْ

    رجالٌ لغاياتها : عربدي

    I say to my soul as it whines-

    "Men have had far worse, O whiner!

  36. ولا تَحْسَبينيَ في مأزِقٍ

    قليلَ الغَنا ضيِّقَ المَنْفْد

    Think not that I am trapped,

    With little to sing and a narrow pass.

  37. وهيهاتَ لا تدركين المنى

    بسيرِ أخي مَهَلٍ مُقْصِد

    Farfetched! You will not reach purpose,

    By walking slowly with no aim.

  38. وإنكِ إن لم تواني الحياةَ

    بنفس المخُاطِرِ تُستْعْبَدي

    If you do not risk life,

    With the spirit of adventure, you will be enslaved.

  39. ولا بدّ أن تقحمي مقحماً

    وإلا فلا بد أن تُطْرَدي

    You must take the plunge,

    Else inevitable exile is your fate.

  40. فحِصّةُ مستحفزٍ مجرمٍ

    لأشرفُ من حِصّةِ المجتدي

    The fate of one provoked and defiant,

    Is nobler than one compliant and tame."

  41. رأيت المغامر في موقف

    به يفْتََدي نفسَهُ المفتدي

    I saw the risk-taker in a stance,

    Wherein he ransoms his soul.

  42. تناوَلُهُ الألْسُنُ المُقْذِعات

    ويعصِفُ بالشتم منه الندى

    Vile tongues assail him,

    And showers of insults surround.

  43. وحيداً كذي جَرَبٍ مزدَرىً

    يروح هضيماً كما يغتدي

    Alone as one outcast,

    He walks away humbled by abuse.

  44. ولم يَطُلِ العهدُ حتى انجلت

    كوارثُ ما هنّ بالسرمد

    Little time passed before

    His woes of old fully passed.

  45. فكان الأميرَ وكان الزعيمَ

    وكان مثالَ الفتى السّيد

    He became the prince, the leader,

    The exemplar of excellent youth.

  46. وكان المبَّجلَ عند المغيب

    وكان المقَدَّمَ في المشهد

    Revered both far and wide,

    Foremost in every assembly.

  47. يَلَذُّ لكلِ فمٍ ذكْرُهُ

    متى يجْرِ في مَحْفِلٍ يُحْمَد

    A pleasure for every mouth his name,

    Whenever mentioned in praised company.

  48. وكان وأمثالُه عبرةً

    على ضوئها يهتدي المهتدي

    He and the likes of him are lessons,

    By whose light the guided find their way.
