1. أرجُ الشبابِ وخمرُه المسكوبُ

    لَيفوحُ من أردانِكُمْ ويطيبُ

    The vigor of youth and its poured wine

    Will emit fragrance from your meadows and be sweet

  2. ومنَ الربيعِ نضارةٌ بوجوهكم

    تَنْدىَ . ومن شهدِ الحياةِ ضريب

    And from spring, freshness is in your faces

    It glistens. And from the first fruits of life a tax

  3. ومنَ الفُتوّةِ سَلْسَلٌ متحدرٌ

    مما يفيضُ يكادُ يُترَعُ كوب

    And from chivalry a flowing chain

    Of what overflows, it almost pours a cup

  4. وَلأنتُمُ إن غاب نجمٌ يُقتدى

    أو حُمَّ خَطبٌ حالِكٌ غِرْبيب

    And if a guiding star disappears for you

    Or an arduous predicament, stranger, arises

  5. وتأزمت كُرَبٌ ، وضاقت خطّةٌ

    واستوحشتْ طرقٌ لنا ودُروب

    And a plight becomes severe, and a strait becomes tight

    And paths become desolate for us and roads

  6. سُرُجٌ تنير الخابطين ، وأنْجُمٌ

    نغدو على أضوائها وَنَؤُوب

    A lantern that illuminates the confused, and stars

    We seek refuge in their lights and return

  7. تتجهّمُ الدُّنيا ، ويعبسُ باسمٌ

    منها ، ويعتوِرُ الحياةَ قُطُوب

    The world frowns, and a misery therein scowls

    And life is fraught with calamities

  8. حتى إذا ابتسمَ " الشبابُ " تذوُّبَتْ

    كالغيمِ في الصّحوِ الجميلِ يذوب

    Until when “youth” smiles, they melt away

    Like clouds in beautiful morning dissolve

  9. يا عاكفينَ على " الدُّروس " كأنَّهُم

    غُلْبُ الصُّقورِ من الظَماء تلوب

    O you who cling to “lessons” as if they are

    The hunger of falcons for prey they crave

  10. والعازفين عن اللذائذِ همُّهمْ

    " جَرَسٌ " يُدقُّ ومِنبرٌ وخطيب

    And those who abstain from pleasures, their only care

    Is “a bell” that rings, a pulpit and a preacher

  11. تركوا مواعيدَ الحِسانِ وعندَهُم

    بين المقاعدِ مَوْعدٌ مَضروب

    They neglected the trysts of affection, and to them

    Between the seats an appointment is set

  12. أشهى من الوجهِ الجميلِ إليهمُ

    وجهُ " الكتابِ " وَوُدُّهُ المخطوب

    Dearer to them than a lovely face

    Is the “face” of “the book” and its beloved betrothed

  13. إن العراقَ بلا نصيرٍ منكم

    وبلا مُجيرٍ ، مُقفِرٌ وجديب

    Iraq without your support is indeed

    Without a protector, barren and waterless land

  14. عاشت سواعدُكُم فهن ضوامنٌ

    أن يُسْتَرَدَّ من الحقوقِ سليب

    Long live your arms, for they are guarantors

    To reclaim what was stolen, rights robbed

  15. وَزَكتْ عواطِفُكُمْ فأَيةُ ثروةٍ

    منها نكافيءُ مُخلِصاً ونُثيب

    And your emotions have thrived, so what wealth

    Can we reward a loyal one and gift?

  16. وَلأْنتُمُ أنْتُمْ – وليس سواكمُ

    أملُ البلادِ وذُخْرُها المطلوب

    For you are you – and none but you

    Are the country’s hope and desired reserve

  17. وَلأْنتُمُ إذ لا ضمائرَ تُرْتَجَى

    للرافدَيْن ، ضمائرٌ وقلوب

    And you, when no conscience remains

    For the two rivers, are conscience and hearts

  18. ولأنتُمُ إن شوّشتْ صفحاتِنا

    مما أُجِدَّ نقائصٌ وذُنوب

    And you, if our pages are corrupted

    With deficiencies committed and sins

  19. الطّاهرونَ كأنهمْ ماءُ السّما

    لم يَلْتَصِقْ دَرَنٌّ بِهِمْ وعيوب

    The pure ones are like rainwater from the sky

    No speck stuck to them or flaws

  20. إنّا وقد جُزْنا المَدَى وتقاربتْ

    آجالُنا . وأمضّنا التجريب

    We have spanned the distance and our lifespans neared

    And we spent experimenting

  21. وتحالفتْ أطوارُنا وتمازَجَتْ

    ونبا بنا التَقريعُ والتأنيب

    Our eras collaborated and intermingled

    And reprimand and rebuke befell us

  22. وتخاذَلَتْ خُطواتُنا من فَرْط ما

    جَدَّ السُرى ، والشدُّ ، والتقريب

    And our steps faltered from the arduous

    Journey, strain, and bringing together

  23. لنَراكُمُ المثلَ العليَّ لأمّةٍ

    ترمي إلى أهدافها وتُصيب

    To see you the lofty example for a nation

    That aspires to its goals and hits target

  24. هي أُمّةٌ لم تحتضن آمالها

    وغداً إلى أحضانِكُمْ ستؤوب

    A nation that did not embrace its hopes

    Tomorrow to your bosom it will return

  25. وغداً يُكفَّرُ والدٌ عما جنى

    ظلماً على يدِ إبنه ويتوب

    And tomorrow a father will atone for the injustice

    He committed by hand of his son and repent

  26. فتماسكوا فغدٌ قريبٌ فَجْرُهُ

    منكم . وكلُّ مُؤمَّلٍ لَقَريب

    So unite, for tomorrow whose dawn

    Is near you. And every hopeful is near

  27. وِتَطلّعوا يُنِرِ الطريقَ أمامَكم

    قَبَسٌ يشعُّ منارهُ ، مَشبوب

    And look ahead; a torch its light radiates

    Kindled will illuminate the path

  28. وتحالفوا أنْ لا يُفّرِقَ بينكم

    غاوٍ .ولا يَنْدسَّ فيكُمْ ذيب

    And ally so no misguided one divides you

    Or a sneak infiltrates your ranks

  29. وتذكّروا المستعمرينَ فانَّهُمْ

    سَوْطٌ على هذي البلادِ وحُوب

    And remember the colonists, for they are

    A scourge upon this country and sieging foes

  30. فتفهمّوا إنَّ العراق بخيره

    وثرائه ، لطَغامِهِمْ منهوب

    So understand Iraq with its goodness

    And wealth, is plundered by their ilk

  31. وتميزوا فهناك وجهٌ سافرٌ

    منهمْ ، وآخرُ بالخنا محجوب

    And differentiate, for among them is an avowed

    Enemy, and another veiled in deceit

  32. وسويّة في خِزيّةٍ مستعمرٌ

    أو مَنْ يُقيمُ مقامَه ويُنيب

    Equally in one bag a colonist

    Or one who takes his place and vilifies

  33. إياكُمُ أنْ تُخدعوا بنجاحكم

    فيما هو المقروءُ والمكتوب

    Beware to be fooled by your success

    In what is recited and transcribed

  34. أو تَحْسَبوُا أن الطريقَ كعهدِكم

    بين الصفوفِ " معبّدٌ " ورحيب

    Or think the path as in your days

    Among the classes “paved” and spacious

  35. ان الحياة سيبلوَنَّ جهادَكم

    منها نجاحٌ مرهِقٌ ورسوب

    Life will test your struggle

    With success that wears down and failing

  36. ومُسَهَّدينَ جزاهُمُ عن ليلِهِمْ

    اللهُ ، والتعليمُ ، والتدريب

    And self-sacrificing, their nighttime reward

    God, education, and training recompensed

  37. أضناهُمُ تعبٌ وخيرُ مجاهدٍ

    مُضنى يُعَبِّئُ أمّةً " متعوب "

    Their fatigue and best of one who struggles

    Is a fatigue that mobilizes a “suffering” nation

  38. أأُخيَّ " عبودٌ " ولستَ بمُعوِزٍ

    مدحاً . ولكنَّ الجُحودَ مَعيب

    Oh brother “Aboud” I do not lack

    In praise of you. But ingratitude is unseemly

  39. إن كان مسَّك و " الحسينَ " كلالةٌ

    أو كان نالكما عناً ولُغُوب

    If tedium and “Al-Hussein” have touched you both

    Or if you both endured hostility and fighting

  40. فلأنتما والشاعرون سويةٌ

    كالشمع يَهدي غيرَه ويذوب

    For you both and the poets are alike

    As a candle guiding others and melting

  41. أُلاء غرسُكما فهل مِنْ غارسٍ

    يزكو كهذا ، غرسُه ويَطيب

    Does any planter thrive like this, his

    Planting fragrant and sweet?

  42. وهلِ الخلودُ ألَذُّ مما أنتما

    فيه ، وأمرُ الخالدينَ عجيب

    And is immortality sweeter than what you both

    Have, and state of the immortal is wondrous

  43. لا يحسبون وجودَهم . ووجودُهم

    قبلَ الوجودِ ، وفوقه محسوب

    They do not feel their existence. And their existence

    Before existence, and above it is ordained
