Youth has passed, will it return?

Old age has dawned, what does it want?

It wants to decrease my nights

    With injustice by increasing them

O white feathered one, twitter away from it

The wings of youth have black feathers

    O horror that startles mirrors

    And makes infants shriek!

O bearer of the banner of misfortunes

O messenger of death, O postman!

O wound inflictor that cannot be cured

    Except by cutting the vein

Despite the nose of youth and my nose

Your rust makes my cheeks bleed

And my head walks on it

    Confused, with an eternal enemy!

How many nights I feared you would come

While I sipped a cup and a lute played

And how much, how much, while youth knew

A gazelle was startled and a neck was slit

    Is youth’s feast returning?

Or is its happy era coming back?

The days when the buds of youth cracked open

And its shadow was a long sword

    And we, like pigeons glorying,

Were strung together by its unique necklace

Or is there no meeting, no lines

To bring the distant close, no limits?!

    Who will inform the jealous

That we have become what the envious aspire to?

That we have replaced a garment with a garment

And coldness has long been exchanged

So the old one went away faded

And the new one appeared ragged

    A beloved affection turned us

And the affectionate friend satisfied us

It would have provoked the kissable

That we sat on their zeal

We did not know what more to gain from it

If it was said: Do they have more?

Our day is languid and dull

And our night intense and stubborn

So today if lips are squeezed

    Or soft sands are squeezed

Or a robber robs a gown

    Or songs please singers

We are content with the pleasure and play

That we are present at their wedding

We have become firewood! And every living thing

    Is firewood coveted for pleasure!
