1. عفواً إذا خانني شعري وتبِاني

    فلُطفُكُم لا أوفِّيهِ بشُكْرانِ

    Forgive me if my poetry betrays me

    For your kindness I cannot repay

  2. وقد يُهوِّنُ عند المرء زلتَه

    إحساسُه أنه ما بينَ إخوان

    What may seem trivial to one

    Is made easier by the feeling of kindred spirits

  3. غطارفَ الحلةِ الفيحاءِ أنكُمُ

    في كل مَكرمُةٍ فِرسانُ ميدان

    The noble people of Faiha, you are

    Knights in the field of generosity

  4. وليس إحسانُكمُ نحوي بمبتَدعٍ

    هنا منابتُ ألطافٍ وإحسان

    Your kindness to me is no novelty

    The Arabs have a brilliant history

  5. للعُرْبِ سفرُ نقاباتٍ مُضيَّعةٍ

    باقٍ لديكم عليه خيرُ عُنوان

    That still shines under your stewardship

    Traits that reveal you as the best of Qahtan's descendants

  6. ملامحٌ عرَبيّاتٌ مُخبِّرةٌ

    بأنكُم خيرُ منسوبٍ لقَحطان

    I came to poetry, my mistress, begging

    For help with verse or pardon for this offender

  7. أتيتُ ربةَ أشعاري أُناشدُها

    عَوناً على الشعر أو صَفحاً عن الجاني

    I left with a promise of forgiveness

    If the devil fails to correct my sins today

  8. ورُحتُ منها على وَعدٍ بمغفرة

    إنْ لم يُسدِّدْ خطايَ اليومَ شيطاني

    I came to your gathering walking in confidence

    With a promise of pardon from my mistress, poetry

  9. وجئتُ مَحفِلَكُم أمشي على ثقةٍ

    من ربّةِ الشعر عندي صَكُ غُفران

    For the sons of Babylon, poetry is

    A tradition built by no other land

  10. أبناءَ بابل للأشعار عندَكُمُ

    عِمارةٌ لم يشيَّدْ مثلَها بانِ

    A state thriving with poetic men

    Prosperous, with rhythm and meter

  11. ودولةٌ برجال الشعر زاهرةٌ

    معمورةٌ بمقاطيعٍ وأوزان

    You have sustained it through the ages

    Never without one of you as ruler

  12. أقمتمُوها عُصوراً في رعايتِكم

    لم تَخلُ من آمرٍ منكُم وسُلطان

    Tomes lie open, palms extended

    And volumes upon volumes fill the corners

  13. طوعَ الأكُفِّ دواوينٌ مشهَّرة

    وفي الزوايا مُضاعٌ ألفُ ديوان

    Before those of Syria and Lebanon

    And from you Egypt took inspiration

  14. هنا نَمَتْ عذَبَاتُ الشعر وارفةً

    غصونُها قبل سوريّا ولُبنان

    Creating elegant and supple verse

    The land of Iraq drank from the Euphrates' feelings

  15. وعنكُمُ أخَذَتْ مِصرٌ مساهِمةً

    في مُعجِبٍ من طريف القول فَينْان

    As did the land of Baghdad

    Yet I humbly ask your pardon

  16. ومن شعور الفراتِينَ قد نَهِلَت

    أرضُ العراق وعبَّتْ أرضُ بَغدان

    If I complain or show anger

    If I criticize your slow pace

  17. لكنني مستميحٌ عفوَكم كَرَماً

    اذا عَتَبتُ عليكم عَتْبَ غضبان

    Or demand you quicken your stride

    And if I wish for political poetry

  18. وان نَكِرتُ عليكم سيرَ متَّئدٍ

    وان طَلَبتُ اليكم سيرَ عَجلان

    To pulse from moment to moment

    Meeting affairs head-on

  19. وإن أردت لكم شِعراً يُجَسُّ به

    نَبْضُ السياسةِ من آنٍ إلى آن

    In equilibrium and with integrity

    With luminous emotions

  20. يكون منها بمرصادٍ يقابلها

    وجهاً لوجهٍ على حدٍ وميزان

    And sometimes fueling fires

    Poetry that engages life

  21. وفي العواطف أمواهٌ مُرَقْرَقَةٌ

    وتارةً هو تسعيرٌ لنيران

    Speaking for all that is in it

    You have woven poetry a splendid cloak

  22. شعراً تُعالَج أبوابُ الحياة به

    يكونُ عن كل ما فيها كإعلان

    Perfecting its warp and weft

    It walked eras, ever vibrant

  23. نَسَجتُمُ بُردةً للشعر ضافية

    أتقنتُمُ لُحمَتَيها أيَّ إِتقان

    A light for kings and crown for turbans

    Had you wished, it would have adorned you

  24. ماشتْ عصوراً طِوالاً وهي زاهيةٌ

    نُوراً لملك وتزييناً لتيجان

    For the eloquent to boast and vie over

    Another world came to you

  25. ولو أردَتُم لكانَتْ زينةً لكُمُ

    بها يُفاخَرُ ماكرَّ الجديدان

    For you to present it aesthetically anew

    To maintain its elegance

  26. أتاكُمُ عالَم ثانٍ فكانَ لكم

    أن تُبرزوها بشكل مُونِقٍ ثان

    You had only to revive its colors

    I do not claim to be foremost in merit

  27. وكان يكفيكُمُ حِفظاً لرَونقِها

    أنْ تأخذوها بأصباغٍ وألوان

    Above my peers and comrades

    Nor do I pretend to be reckless with joy

  28. لا أدَّعي أنني أولَى بتَكرِمةٍ

    وأنني فوقَ أصحابي وأقراني

    As if you had forgotten me

    But it delighted me that the Euphrates

  29. ولا أُعرضُ اني طائشٌ فرحاً

    وان تَذكَّرتمُوني بعد نِسيان

    Should first honor an artist

    I implore you by the zeal that drove you

  30. لكنما سرَّني أن الفراتَ به

    يُقامُ أولُ تكريمٍ لفنّان

    To remember and elevate me

    By the Euphrates' virtues, refined under

  31. ناشدتُكم بالحَمِيّات التي دفعت

    بكم لذكرِيَ والإِعلاءُ من شاني

    The injustice of tyrants, and the boon of oppression

    Do not neglect some hidden

  32. وبالمزايا الفُراتِيّات هذَّبها

    جورُ الطُغاةِ وكم فضلٍ لطُغيان

    Or gifted genius, his light obscured

    Appreciation may rouse a sensitive poet,

  33. ألا اجتهَدْتُم بأن لا تتركوا لَبِقاً

    أو نابغاً عبقرياً طيَّ كتمان

    Flourishing through passion and emotion

    While neglect may ruin a talent-

  34. قد يَبعَثُ الشاعرَ الحَساسَ مزدهراً

    تقديرُ عاطفةٍ منه ووجدان

    You would have seen what a volcano!

    I am proof of what I wished to demonstrate

  35. وقد تَبوخُ على الأهمال مَوهِبةٌ

    لو أُلْهِبَت لرأيتُم أيَّ بَركان

    That none other could provide this evidence

    Attacked from all sides by gnashing

  36. أنا الدليلُ على قَولٍ أردتُ به

    أن لا يكونَ له غَيري كبُرهان

    Wolves and hyenas tearing my flesh

    Their nobility heaping curses at will

  37. تناوشتْني من الأطراف ناهشةً

    لحمي عصابةُ أضباع وذُؤبان

    With generosity and no insult

    It is enough that you know the gist:

  38. كالتْ ليَ الشَتْمَ ما شاءَت مكارمُها

    سمحاءَ من دون تطفيف ونُقصان

    No human should insult another

    And if I am truthful, the people had no purpose

  39. وحسبُكُم وعليكُمْ شرحُ مُجمَله

    أن لم يكن شتمُ إنسانٍ لإنسان

    But to kill the alert conscience within me

    I found no solace for their bitterness

  40. وان صَدَقتُ فما للقوم من غَرَضٍ

    إلا إماتةُ حِسٍ فيَّ يقظان

    Except the affection of sincere and loyal friends

    Though some squint at me with scorn

  41. ولم أجدْ ما يُنَسَّيني مَضاضتَها

    إلا عواطفَ خُلاّنٍ وخُلْصان

    Your kindness is a meadow for me

    Poetry hones resolve and prepares

  42. وانني إنْ رَمَتْني أعينٌ خُزُرٌ

    فانَّ أعينَكُم باللطفِ تَرعاني

    For events, educating minds

    Take the treasures "Al Fayha" holds

  43. في الشعر شَحْذٌ لعَزْماتٍ ومُحتَسَبٌ

    لطارئآتٍ وترويضٌ لأذهان

    Eternal works and those of "Al Ghariyan"

    And celebrate the names of its people-

  44. خذوا بما ضمَّت " الفيحاءُ " من غُرَرٍ

    مْخَلَّداتٍ وما ضَمَّ " الغَرِيّان "

    Even if despite them- deaf to their ears

    And teach fragments of their verse

  45. ونوِّهوا باسمِ أهليها لتَسمَعَهم

    ولو على الرغم منها – صُمُّ آذان

    Depicting joys and sorrows

    By the civilization of kings through the ages

  46. ودَرِّسوا نشْكم من شِعرِهم قِطَعاً

    مُصوِّراتٍ لأفراحٍ وأحزان

    In a procession of artistic elites adorned

    The king dismounted in honor of him, while

  47. هنا بـ " بابلَ " قام الفنُّ تُسنِدُه

    حضارةُ المُلكِ من أزمانِ ازمان

    Solemn ministers - lofty pillars - walked like monks

    Appreciating the sculptor's gift

  48. هنا مَشَى الفذُّ " بانيبالُ " مُزدَهياً

    في موكِبٍ بغُواةِ الفنِ مُزدان

    As prophecy, by faith and conviction

    From here, systems were prepared

  49. تَرجَّلَ المُلْكُ إكراماً له ومَشَتْ

    خواشعاً – ساسةٌ غُرٌّ – كرُهبان

    For both Easts, and religions paved

    Babylon's law shook people with its awe

  50. مُقَدِّرين من النحّات موهبةً

    هي النُبُوّةُ من وحيٍ وإيمان

    Before they knew the law of Greece

    To reform a kingdom, the system of Assyria and Chaldea is still needed

  51. من هاهنا كان تحضيرٌ لأنظمةٍ

    في المشرِقَينِ وتمهيدٌ لأديان

    To protect individuals and the community

    Thank you to the mouths that perfume me

  52. تشريعُ بابلَ هزَّ الناسَ روعتُه

    من قبلِ أن يعرِفوا تشريعَ يونان

    With eloquent and beautiful praise

    Flowing with the melted affection that

  53. للآنَ يُحتاجُ في إصلاحِ مملكةٍ

    نظامُ دولةِ آشورٍ وكِلدان

    Seeks a heart of utter sincerity

    If I were able, I would offer you my soul

  54. هنا " حمورابِ" سنَّ العدلَ معتمداً

    به على حفظِ أفراد وعمران

    But giving you my feeling is within my capacity

  55. شكراً جزيلاً لأفواهٍ تُعطِّرُني

    بكل مُمتْدَحِ الأسلوبِ حَسّان

  56. رّيانةً بمُذابِ العاطفاتِ أتَتْ

    تسعى لقلبٍ من الإخلاص رَيان

  57. ولو تمكَّنتُ قدَّمتُ الفؤادَ لكم

    لكنَّ تقديمَ إحساسي بإِمكاني
