1. ماذا تُريدُ من الزمانِ

    ومن الرغائب والأماني

    What do you want from time,

    From wishes and hopes?

  2. أوَكلّما شارفتَ من

    آمالك الغرِ الحسان

    Whenever you came close

    To your beautiful dreams,

  3. ورعتك الطافُ العناية

    بالرفاهِ وبالأمان

    Providence watched over

    Your comfort and safety.

  4. أُغْرِمْتَ بالآهات إغرامَ

    الحنيفةِ بالأذان؟

    Are you infatuated with sighs

    Like the pious with the call to prayer?

  5. إن كنتَ تَحسُدُ من يحوطُ

    البابَ منه حارسان

    If you envy those guarded

    By two guards at their door,

  6. فلديكَ حراسٌ كأنَّك

    منهُمُ في معمعان

    You have guards as if

    You were in a citadel.

  7. ومؤكلون بما تُصرِّفُ

    في الدقائقِ والثواني

    Appointed over what you dispose

    Of moments and hours.

  8. أُسكنتَ داراً مالها

    في الصيت والعظموت ثاني

    You live in a house unmatched

    In fame and greatness by any other,

  9. ما إن يباحُ دخولُها

    إلا لذي خَطَرٍ وشان

    None may enter it

    Except one of prestige and esteem,

  10. دارٌ يُشيرُ لها صديق

    أو عدوٌ بالبنان

    A house any friend

    Or foe points to with pride.

  11. أهوى عليها ألفُ باكٍ

    وادّعاها ألفُ باني

    A thousand weepers coveted it

    And a thousand builders claimed it,

  12. وُقّيتَ فيها رَغمَ أنفِك

    من خبيئات الدِنان

    Yet despite yourself you were protected

    From the schemes of evildoers,

  13. وحُفظْتَ فيها من غرور المال

    أو سِحْرِ الحسان

    And shielded from the arrogance of money

    Or the sorcery of beauty.

  14. حجبوك عن لحظِ العيونِ

    تأنقاً لك في الصيّان

    They hid you from the glances of eyes

    To preserve your integrity,

  15. مثل المعيديّ السَّماعُ

    به أحب من العِيان

    Like the repeated chant

    Is dearer than seeing.

  16. وعلامَ تَحْسُدُ من تلهّى

    بالمثالث والمثاني

    Why do you envy those entertained

    By games and amusements?

  17. أوَليس خشخشةُ الحديد

    ألَذَّ من عزفِ القِيان

    Is not the clank of iron more sweet

    Than the music of lutes

  18. يشدو بها من أجل

    لهوك ألفُ مكروبٍ وعاني

    Which others use to forget

    Their troubles and sorrows?

  19. أوزانُ شعرِك بعضُ

    أوزانٍ حوتها باتزان

    The rhythms of your poetry are the rhythms

    Contained in the Psalms.

  20. ماذا تريد من الزمان

    أُعطيتَ ما لم يُعْطَ ثاني

    What more do you want from time?

    You were given what no other was given,

  21. أُعطيتَ من لطف الطبيعة

    أن يُشِعَ النيران

    Nature gave you the gift

    To kindle fires,

  22. صبحاً وإمساءً ، وأن

    يوحي إليك الفرقدان

    Morning and evening, and

    To inspire the poet.

  23. سبِّحْ بأنعُمِهِمْ فأنت

    بفضل ما أولَوْك جاني

    Thank the bounty granted you,

    For through their favor you have become rich.

  24. صكّ الحديدِ على يديكَ

    جزاءُ ما جَنَتِ اليدان

    The clang of iron on your hands

    Is the reward your hands have earned.

  25. يا عابثاً بسلامة الوطن

    العزيز ، وبالأمان

    O you who disturb the peace of the dear homeland,

    And security,

  26. ومفرقاً زُمَرَ اليهودِ

    طوائفاً كلاًّ لشان

    And divide the Jews

    Into factions, each with its own concern,

  27. ما أنت و " الكاشير " و " الطاريف "

    من بقرٍ وضان

    You and the "Kashir" and "Tarrif"

    Are but oxen and sheep.

  28. إن الصحافةَ حرةٌ

    لكن على شَرطِ الضمان

    The press is free

    But with the condition of responsibility.

  29. سبِّحْ بأنعُمِهمْ وإنْ

    عانيت منهم ما تعاني

    Thank their bounty, even

    If you suffer what you suffer,

  30. إن لم تُفدْكَ عقوبةٌ

    فعسى تُفيدُ عقوبتان

    If punishment does not benefit you

    Perhaps two punishments will,

  31. أوْ لَمْ يُفِدْك مطهر

    فلقد يُفيدُ مطهران

    Or if the ordeal did not teach you

    Then two ordeals might.
