1. على رغم أنف الموت ذكُرك خالدُ

    ترِنُّ بسَمع الدهر منكَ القصائدُ

    Despite death's defiance, your memory endures

    Your poems still resonate, echoing through the ages

  2. نُعيتَ إلى غُرّ القوافي فأعولَتْ

    عليك من الشعر الحسانُ الخرائد

    You were eulogized in verse, so poets lamented

    With finest poetry, wailing in grief over you

  3. وللعلم فياضاً فماجَتْ مصادرٌ

    عُنيتَ بها بحثاً وجاشَتْ موارد

    And knowledge overflowed, so its sources surged

    You examined it closely, and its springs gushed

  4. وفلسفةٌ أطلعتَ في الشعر نُورَها

    هي اليومَ ثَكْلى عن جميلٍ تُناشد

    A philosophy you illuminated in verse

    Now bereft of its beauty, finding none who chant

  5. حَلفتُ يميناً لم تَشُبْها اختلاطةٌ

    وقلبي على دعوى لسانيَ شاهد

    I swore an oath not tainted by pretense

    My heart bears witness to what my tongue avows

  6. لقد كنتَ فخراً للعراق وزينةً

    تُزانُ نواديه بها والمعاهد

    You were Iraq’s pride and its finest ornament

    Balancing its literary circles and schools

  7. وكنت على خِصبِ العراقِّي شاهداً

    إذا أعوزتنا في التباهي شَواهد

    Iraq’s fertile soil bore you as witness

    Whenever we lacked glories, you showed the way

  8. وكنت أرقَّ الناس طبعاً ونُكتةً

    وألطفَ من دارَتْ عليه المقاعد

    Your nature was the gentlest and most refined

    Your gatherings, the most charming that convened

  9. وأنت ابتعثتَ الشعرَ بعد خُموله

    نشيطاً . فخوضُ الشعر بعدك راكد

    You revived poetry after its dormancy

    Since you, poetic endeavor has been bleak

  10. ثوى اليومَ في هذي الحفيرة عالِمٌ

    باسرارها . لهه بالعقل ناشد

    A scholar rests today in this grave

    Probing its secrets with his intellect

  11. أقامَ على العلم الصحيح اعتقادَه

    عَدوٌّ لا شباح الخُرافات طارد

    His faith was anchored in truthful knowledge

    No friend to superstitions' specters, driving them away

  12. وكان نقياً فكرةً وعقيدةً

    عزيزاً عليه ان تَسِفَّ العقائد

    Pure in thought and creed, steadfast

    In his rejection of corrupt doctrines

  13. يؤكد أن الدينَ حُبٌّ ورحمةٌ

    وعدلٌ ، وأن اللهَ لا شكَ واحد

    He affirmed religion as love and mercy

    Justice – no doubt God is One

  14. وأن الذي قد سخَّر الدينَ طامعاً

    يتاجرُ باسم اللهِ ، للهِ جاحد

    Whoever exploited faith covetously

    Was to God a denier, an ingrate

  15. ثوَى اليومَ في هذي الحفيرة شاعرٌ

    على الظلم محتجٌّ عن العدل ذائد

    Today a poet rests in this grave

    Protesting injustice, championing justice and right

  16. وشيخوخةٍ مدّت على الكون ظلَّها

    تكافحُ عن آرائها وتجالِد

    Old age had cast its shadow on the world

    And still he defended his views, battling staunchly

  17. أبا الشعرِ ، إنَّ الشعر هذا محلُّه

    فقد نصَّت الاسماعُ والجمع حاشِد

    O father of poetry! Herein lies its domain

    For listeners are present, and throngs gather

  18. وهذي جيوشُ العلم والشعر تبتغي

    لها قائداً فذاً فهل أنَت قائد؟

    Seeking a leader, o tribes of science and verse

    Will you be that brilliant, consummate leader?

  19. فأين قصيدٌ قد نظَمتَ فريدَهُ

    وأينَ من الشعر البديعِ الفرائد

    Where is the unmatched poem you crafted?

    Where are those exquisite, splendid verses?

  20. وأين النكاتُ المؤنساتُ كأنها

    حدائقُ تُسقى بالندى وتعاوِد

    Where are those charming, fetching notions

    Like gardens watered with dew, ever flourishing?

  21. وأين العيونُ اللامعاتُ زكانةً

    رغائبُ تبدو تبدو فوقها ومقاصد

    Where are those shimmering eyes, so pure

    Whims appearing, disappearing over them?

  22. جميل أعانَ الرافدينِ بثالثٍ

    من الشعر تَنميه بحورٌ رَوافد

    Jamil enriched the Two Rivers with a third:

    His poetry, nourished by overflowing seas

  23. وكان حياةً للنفوس ورحمةً

    تُغاثُ بها هذي النفوسُ الهوامد

    Bringing life to souls, a mercy

    To succor those yearning souls

  24. تطاوعُه غُرُّ كأنها

    وصائفُ في زِيناتها وَولائد

    It yielded to him, like

    Brides adorned in their beauty, shining

  25. أقولُ لرهطِ الشعر يبغون باعثاً

    عليه . تُثير الشعرَ هذي النضائد

    I say to poets seeking one to rouse them:

    Let these verses kindle and spur you!

  26. هلمُّوا إلى قبر الزهاويِّ نقتنصْ

    به نَفَساً من روُحه ونُطارِد

    Come to Zahawi's grave, there we will seize

    A breath of his soul, pursue it, and grasp it!

  27. وإن خيالاً يملأُ الشعرَ رَهبةً

    سكونٌ على قبرِ الزهاويِّ سائد

    Though only stillness fills verse with trepidation

    Tranquility cloaks Zahawi's grave, prevailing

  28. وحجُّوا إلى بيتٍ هو الفنُّ نفسُه

    أنارَتْ " فَنيسٌ " ساحَه و " عُطارد"

    Make pilgrimage to a home, Art itself

    Venus and Mercury illuminated its courtyard

  29. فإن بيوتَ الشاعرين مناسكٌ

    وإن قبورَ النابغين معابد

    For the homes of poets are sanctuaries

    And the graves of the eminent, hallowed shrines

  30. أبا الشعر والفكرُ المنبِّهُ أمةٌ

    عزيزٌ علينا أنكَ اليومَ راقد

    O father of poetry and awakening thought!

    A beloved nation grieves you are now at rest

  31. وأن الذي هزَّ القلوبَ هوامداً

    وحرَّكَها في التُرب ثاوٍ فهامد

    That he who shook resolute souls

    Now lies still, wrapped in soil, inanimate

  32. وأن فؤاداً شع نوراً وقوَّةً

    هو اليوم مسودُّ الجوانب بارد

    That a heart radiating light and strength

    Is now darkened, its flanks unmoving, cold

  33. فهل أنت راضٍ عن حياة خبرتَها

    ممارسةً أمْ أنت غضبانُ حارِد؟

    Are you content with the life you knew

    In practice? Or are you angry, raging?

  34. أضاعوك حياً وابتغوك جنازةً

    وهذا الذي تأباه صِيدٌ أماجد

    They lost you in life, and sought you out only in death

    But this is a glory you adamantly spurned
