1. قُمْ حِّي هذي المنشآت معاهدا

    الناهضاتِ مع النُجومِ خوالدا

    Arise, revives these edifices colleges

    Rising with the stars eternal dwellers

  2. الشامخاتِ أنوُفهن إلى السما

    والمطلعاتِ لفرقَدين فَراقدا

    Whose towering spires reach into heaven

    And whose origins lie in graves long cold

  3. والفاتحاتِ على الخلودِ نوافذاً

    والمجرياتِ مع الحياة روافدا

    With windows opening onto eternity

    And channels flowing with life's renewal

  4. قم حيِّهنَّ ببعثِ شعب واثقاً

    وَتَرضَّهُنَّ بخَلق جيلٍ جاهدا

    Revive them, with people's awakening trust

    And please them, with youth striving ahead

  5. جَلَّتْ بُنىً تَلدُ الرجال وقُدست

    غُرفٌ تَبوَّأها الخلودُ مقاعدا

    Noble lines giving birth to heroes were built

    And chambers, where immortality took its seat

  6. قم حييِّ هذي الموحيات صوامتاً

    واستنطِقِ الحَجَرَ البليغ الجْامدا

    Arise, give life to these silent inspirations

    And make eloquent this dense, solid stone

  7. واخلَعْ عليهنَّ المواهبَ تُجتلى

    لا النثَرَ ، لا الشعرَ المعادَ ، قلائدا

    Bestow on them gifts to be revealed

    No prose, no hackneyed poetry, just garlands

  8. يا بنتَ رسطاليسَ امُّكِ حرَّةٌ

    تلد البنينَ فرائداً وخرائدا

    Daughter of Rustum, your mother was free

    Bearing outstanding and common sons

  9. وأبوكِ يحتضنُ السرير يَرُبُّها

    ويقوتُها قلباً وذهنا حاشدا

    While your father cradles the throne mentoring it

    Fortifying its heart and mind vigilantly

  10. مَشَتٍ القرونُ وما يزالُ كعهده

    في أمسِ ، " مشاءً " يعودُ كما بدا

    Centuries have passed, yet he remains as he began

    Yesterday, "Al-Masha", he still is today

  11. يستنزلُ الخَطراتِ من عَليائها

    عُصْماً ويُدني العالمَ المتباعدا

    He wards off dangers, looming from their heights

    A shelter, bringing closer the distant universe

  12. لم يقتنصنْ جاهاً ولاسامَ النُهى

    ذُلاً ، ولا اتخذَ الحريرَ وسائدا

    He sought no glory, nor heard rebuke

    Took no silk, sat on no cushions

  13. جلَّ النُهى . الفكر أعظمُ عصمةً

    من أنْ يُريدَ وصائفاً وولائدا

    Sublime morality is a greater refuge

    Than desiring chattel and concubines

  14. يا بنتَ رسطاليسَ قُصِّي نستمعْ

    عن عاشِقيكِ أقارباً وأباعدا

    Daughter of Rustum, let us hear you tell

    Of your lovers, both near and afar

  15. عن واهبينَ حياتَهم ، ما استُعبِدوا

    للشاكرين ، ولم يَذُموا الجْاحدا

    Those who gave their lives, they were not enslaved

    To the thankful, nor insulted the ungrateful

  16. والصاعدينَ إلى المشانق مثلما

    ارتَقتِ النُّسورُ إلى السماءِ صواعدا

    And those ascending the gallows as eagles soar

    To the heavens rising on steps

  17. ومُحَرَّقين يُغازلون وَقودَها

    شوقاً إليكِ ويَحمَدون الواقدا

    And those burned, flirting with their fire

    Yearning for you, praising their executioner

  18. والمُسمَلات عُيونُهم ، وكأنهم

    بطيُوف شخصك يكحلون مراودا

    Their eyes enchained, as if with your image

    They were outlining with kohl a visit

  19. قُصِّي فَدَيتُك من لَعوب غَضةٍِ

    تَصِفُ القُرونَ مَخابراً ومَشاهداً

    Relate to me, your ransom, from the follies of the young

    Who portray centuries as correspondence and scenes

  20. إني وَجدْتُ – وللشبابِ حدودهُ

    أشهى بناتِ الفكر أقصاها مَدى

    For indeed I found - and youth has its limits -

    The most wondrous daughters of thought unsurpassed

  21. فتخلّعي نجدِ الفُهومَ عَوارِياً

    وتَبَسمي نجد الفُنونَ نضائدا

    So cast off the robe of meanings, naked

    And smile with the garments of arts adorned

  22. وتطلَّبي نُزْجِ النفوسَ عزيزةً

    هَدياً وننتظمُ القُلوبَ قصائدا

    And seek the exquisite essence of souls preciously

    As guidance, and let our hearts string poems

  23. يا بنت رسطاليس لُحتِ " بواسط "

    فَنزَلت " حيّاً " بالصبابة حاشدا

    Rustum’s daughter, you shone in “Basra”

    And descended in "Alive" among bustling youth

  24. خصبَ الشُعور ستَحَمدين مولَّهاً

    من أهله ، ومُغازلاً ، ومُراوِدا

    Fertile feeling will praise its inspirer

    Among its people, her ardent admirer

  25. إيهٍ " بلاسمُ " والمفاخرُ جَمةٌ

    أحرزتَ مَنهُنَّ الطريفَ التالدا

    Bravo “Basma”! And pride is abundant

    You have attained the most elegant lasting glory

  26. أحرزتَ مجداً ليس ينفدَ ذكرهُ

    طولَ المدى وبذلتَ كنزاً نافِدا

    You attained glory which shall never fade

    And spent treasures which shall never deplete

  27. ذكرٌ يظَلُّ بكل خطوٍ يرتَمي

    للصف ، او جرَسٍ يُدقُّ معاودا

    Glory upon glory, so your ambition strides

    Towards you intentionally, seeking glory

  28. خَبِّرْ فقد جُبتَ الحياةَ رخيَّةً

    خضراء َ ، لم تكذِبْ لعينك رائدا

    They lied. The noblest are prey for honours

    Although deemed predator, they are the prey

  29. وحَلبتَ من غَفلات دهرِك شطرَها

    وَقنَصتَ من مُتع النَعيم الشاردا

    And for immortality there are traps

    That forever seize those who hunt glory

  30. وانسَبْتَ في غُدرُ اللذائذ خائضاً

    وخَبَرتَهن مصادِراً ومَواردا

    The noble walks with benevolence hand in hand

    A maker, facilitating another maker's way

  31. أعرَفْتَ كالأثر المخلَّدِ لذةً

    جازَتْ مخَلِّدها ، فكان الخالدا

    Until, having reached the peak of beauty

    The noble walks alone towards noble deeds

  32. لله درُّك من كريمٍ أنعَشَت

    كفّاهُ روحاً من نبوغ هامدا

    Immortality is no puzzle, but rather

    Souls are its hazards and its climbs

  33. نَفَّقتَ من عَذَبات صبيان الحِمى

    عِلْقاً بمُنعَرج الأزقةِ كاسدا

    Other than thousands who walk as they used

    By your hands, pathways and beginnings?

  34. إني وَجدتُ مواهباً مطمورةً

    كالزراع أينعَ لمُ يصادفْ حاصدا

    They march at dawn to the forgotten

    And to vanity, if not to parlours and games

  35. ولربَّ أشعثَ لأغبرٍ ذي هامة

    تُلقي على كَتَفيهِ ثقلاَ آيدا

    You revived them, so this solid matter

    Bears witness eloquently to your name

  36. ألوى به فَقرٌ فنكَّب خطوَة

    جَهلٌ فزلَّ عن الفضيلةِ حائدا

    And you gathered them, readying

    An army by which to ward off plagues

  37. قد راحَ يبعَثُ بالتعاسةِ راحماً

    قد كان لولا ذاكَ يرجِعُ حاسدا

    Ignorance: the vilest thing to banish

    From a homeland, by one who strays from ignorance

  38. قُتِلَ العُقوقُ ، فكم قَتَلنا نابغاً

    بين البُيوتِ ، وكم وأدنا قائدا

    You gave the right of knowledge its due radiance

    And extended to education its most generous hand

  39. اولاء حمدُك عاقِباً عن عاقبٍ

    أتريدُ احسنَ من اولئك حامدا

    So give the teacher, Basma, his right

    And support him, for the teacher lacks support

  40. سيقولُ عنك الدهرُ : ثَمَةَ ماجدٌ

    في الرافدين شأى الكريم الماجدا

    If prostration in worship was allowed for the free

    I would be worshipfully prostrate before teachers

  41. هل غيرُ أن رُمتَ الثناء كما ادعي

    نَفَرٌ ، وأن أنْبَهتَ ذكرَكَ عامدا

    To the exhausted hard worker during his vigils

    And one who tastes the bitterness of woes kneeling

  42. مجداً على مجد ، فتلكَ طَماحةٌ

    يمشي عليها المجدُ نحوكَ قاصدا

    To the neglected covered in wounds, seeking no hand

    To dress his injuries nor requesting aid

  43. كذَبوا فان الأكرمينَ طرائدٌ

    للمَكْرُماتِ وإنُ حسِبنَ طرائدا

    To the one exploiting the essence of his mind

    Feeding thousands, yet deemed as one

  44. وإذا صدقتُ فللخلودِ مصايدٌ

    أبداً تَلَقَّفُ من أتاه صائدا

    Tell the teacher, asking not guiding:

    Be for youth, in ordeals, a guide

  45. يمشي الكريمُ مع التكرُّم توأماً

    صنوٌ يسددُ خطوَ صنوٍ عائدا

    Creator of generations, create them ingeniously

    And aspire, with ingenuity, to a critical progeny

  46. حتى إذا بلغَ الجميلُ أشُدَّه

    سارَ الكريمُ إلى المكارم فاردا

    A future era will say about the present

    Cursed be an era which has passed away

  47. ما كان باللُغزِ الخلودُ وإنما

    كان النفوسَ نوازلاً و صواعدا

    And a future descendant will shun his ancestors

    And blame their children for the sins of their fathers

  48. هل غيرُ آلافٍ تروحُ كما اغتدت

    بيَدى سواكَ طرائقاً وبدائدا

    Tell the youth: when storms unleash fury

    Be not like the soft breeze, static

  49. تغدو إلى مطمورةٍ ، إن لم تَرُحْ

    للهوِ دوراً ، والقِمارِ موائدا

    And when the furnaces of wrath inflame against us

    Be not like the hissing of a dying fire

  50. احييتَهُنَّ فكانَ عدلاً ناطقاً

    هذا الجمادُ على سمِّكَ شاهدا

    Prepare for us progeny like the gentle rain

    And progeny like thunder rumbling

  51. وضممتَهُنَّ لبعضِهنَّ مجْهِّزاً

    جيشاً ترُدُّ به الوَباءَ الوافدا

    For I have seen God create mercy

    An angel, and for rebellion create a demon

  52. الجهلَ : اكرمُ ذائدٍ عن موطنٍ

    من راحَ فيه عن الجهالةِ ذائدا

    And Muhammad, no sooner marshalled his army

    To tread the lands, restless and bustling

  53. أعطيتَ حقَّ العلمِ أوفاها ندى

    ومدَدتَ للتعليم أزكاها يَدا

    And to overthrow a tyrant, elevate the oppressed

    Enlighten the benighted, and rouse the dormant

  54. فاعطِ المعلمَ يا " بلاسمُ " حقهُ

    واعضُدْ فقد عَدِمَ المعلمُ عاضداً

    Had he not mobilised, enraged, for leadership

    Fuming at fragile and resistant systems

  55. لو جازَ للحر السُجودُ تعبًّداً

    لوُجدتُ عبداً للمعلِّم ساجدا

    He who does not resist the powerful

    Is not one who yields to the weak

  56. للمُتعَب المجهودِ في يَقظاتِهِ

    والمرَتعي طيفَ المتاعبِ هاجدا

    The lowliest of God's creations in a land

    Where corruption reigns, are those neutral

  57. والمثُخنِ المجهولِ لم يَنشُد يداً

    تأسوا الجْراحَ ولا تَطلَّب ناشدا

    Progeny who correct a corrupt era

    Not become, like the era, themselves corrupt

  58. والمستبيحِ عُصارةً من ذهنِهِ

    يغذو الألوفَ بها ، ويُحسبُ واحدا

    You were taught the duty of discernment

    So you know its benefits and harms better

  59. قل للمعلم راجياً، لا راشداً

    كن للشبيبةِ في المزالقِ راشدا

    Hastening an imperfect generation

    Will only load it with further troubles

  60. يا خالقَ الأجيالِ أبدِِعْ خَلْقَها

    وتَوَّق بالإبداع جيلاً ناقدا

    Release the hand of analysis in their history

    Unfettered, and untie the minds' shackles

  61. سيقولُ عهدٌ مقبلُ عن حاضرٍ

    نُشوى عليه : لُعنتَ عهداً بائدا

    One must understand life with its faults

    Virtues, pleasures, and ordeals

  62. ولسوفَ يبرأ عاقبٌ عن أهلهِ

    ولسوفَ يَتَّهِمُ البنونَ الوالدا

    Side by side complementing each other

    Like well-arranged strands of pearls

  63. قل للشبيبة حينَ يعصِفُ عاصف

    ألا يَظلُّوا كالنسيمِ رواكدا

    Teach them love of the willful among mankind

    Passionately, and love of the devout faithfully

  64. وإذا اغتَلَتْ فينا مراجلُ نقمةٍ

    ألا يكونوا زمهريراً باردا

    And revere nations as sanctities, do not belittle

    A people, nor impose upon them examples

  65. هيِّئ لنا نشءاً كما انصَبَّ الحيا

    لُطفاً ، ونشءاَ كالزلازل راعدا

    Seek out its distant past returning to it

    And aid its proximate past supporting it

  66. فلقد رأيتُ اللهَ يخلُق رحمةً

    مَلَكاً ، ويخلُقُ للتمردِ ماردا

    Show it the skulls of its mighty ancestors

    And resurrect for it a resolute arm and hand

  67. ومحمداً ما إنْ أهابَ بجيشهِ

    يطأ البلادَ روابياً و فدافدا

    And if evidence interrogates you

    About anything, demanding proof

  68. ويكُبُّ جباراً ، ويُعلي مُدقعاً

    ويُنيرُ خابطةً ، ويُنهضُ راقدا

    Send it spectres, so let it witness

    What provokes a watcher and onlooker

  69. لو لم يعبّئ للقيادةِ ثائِراً

    حَنِقأً على نُظُمٍٍ بَلينَ وحاردا

    Let it witness a spectre, bare and famished

    Expelled by his people, hassled and pursued

  70. ما إن يروحُ مع الضعيف مُطاوعاً

    من لا يروحُ على القويِّ معاندا

    Reform with your curriculum, a curriculum enslaved

    Made by foreigners, hating culture

  71. وأذلُّ خلقِ اللهِ في بَلَدٍ طغت

    فيه الرزايا من يكونُ محايدا

    They said: with rage he establishes in Iraq’s midst

    Principles undermining dignity

  72. نشءٌ يقوِّمُ من زمانٍ فاسدٍ

    لا كالزمانِ يكونُ خَلْقاً فاسدا

    Occupying its outskirts and oases

    And closing its routes and passages

  73. عُلِّمْتُمُ فُرْضَ الحسابِ فأنتُمُ

    أدرى بِهنَّ فوائداً وعوائدا

    The armies of ruin marched troops

    To the two rivers with their troops

  74. ما إن تُعجِّلُ جيلٍ ناقصاً

    إلاّ تحمَّلَ من عناءِ زائدا

    No simpler than colonizing minds

    By establishing in intellects, foundations

  75. أطلِقْ يدَ التحليل في تاريخهم

    حراً ، وفكَّ من العِقال أوابدا

    Arise, revive these edifices colleges

    Rising with the stars eternal dwellers

  76. لابُدَّ من فَهم الحياةِ مَعايباً

    ومفاخِراً ، ولذائذاً ، وشدائدا

  77. جنباً إلى جنبٍ يُتمِّمُ بعضها

    بعضاً كما انتظَم الجُمانُ فرائدا

  78. علِّمْهُ حُبَّ الثائرين من الورى

    طُرّاً ، وحُبَّ المخلصينَ عقائدا

  79. واجْلُ الشٌّعوبَ كرائماً لا تَنتَقِصْ

    شعباً ، ولا تَقحَمْ عليه شواهدا

  80. واجلُبْ له أمسٍ البعيدَ مَراجِعاً

    وألِحْ له أمسِ القريبَ مساندا

  81. أرِه لثورته عِظامَ جماجمٍ

    وابعَثْ له زنداً أطنَّ وساعدا

  82. وإذا تقصَّاكَ الدليلُ مسائلاً

    عن أيّ شيءٍ أعقَبَتْ ومناشدا

  83. فابعثْ له الاشباحَ يشهدْ عندَها

    ما يستفِّز مًطالعاً ومُشاهدا

  84. يشهدْ خيالاً عارياً ومُجَوَّعاً

    من أهلهم ومُضايقاً ومُطارَدا

  85. أصِلحْ بنهجِك منهجاً مُستعبداً

    صُنعَ الغريبِ ، على الثقافةِ حاقدا

  86. قالوا : قواعدُ يبتنيها غاضبٌ

    وسْطَ العراق على الكرامةِ قاعدا

  87. تحتلُّ منه مشارفاً ومَناهلاً

    وتَسدُّ منه مسالكاً و منافذا

  88. ساقَتْ جُيوشَ الموبقاتِ حواشداً

    للرافدين مع الجيوشِ حواشدا

  89. ما كان أهونَ خطبَهُ مستعمراً

    لو لم يُقِمْ وسْط العقولِ قواعد
