1. حَمَلَتْ إليك رسالةَ المفجوعِ

    عينٌ مرقرقةٌ بفيضِ دموعي

    The teary-eyed messenger conveyed to you

    My sorrowful message overflowing with tears

  2. لاتبخَسوا قَدْرَ الدموع فانها

    دفعُ الهموم تَفيضُ من يَنْبوع

    Do not underestimate the worth of tears

    For they are the outpouring that dispels sorrows

  3. للنفس حالاتٌ يَلَذُّ لها الأسى

    وترى البكاءَ كواجبٍ مشروع

    The soul has states when grief is pleasing

    And weeping seems a warranted duty

  4. وأمضَّها فقدُ الشبابِ مضرَّجاً

    بدمائه من كفِ غير قريع

    And the most extreme is the loss of youth

    Soaked with his blood from the grip of one without mercy

  5. أأبا فلاحٍ هل سمعتَ مَنَاحَةً

    وَصَلَتْ إلى أسماعِ كلِّ سميع

    Oh Abul Falah, did you hear the wailing

    That reached the ears of every listener?

  6. قد كنتَ في مندوحةٍ عن مثلِها

    لولا قضاءٌ ليس بالمدفوع

    You had been spared the likes of it

    Were it not for a decree that could not be averted

  7. أبكيكَ للطبعِ الرقيقِ وللحِجىَ

    أبكي لحبلِ شبابِكَ المقطوع

    I cry for your tender nature and devotion

    I cry for your severed rope of youth

  8. أبكيك لستُ أخْصُّ خلقاً واحداً

    لكنما أبكي على المجموع

    I do not cry for you alone

    Rather I cry for the whole group

  9. جَزَعاً شقيقيه فهذا موقفٌ

    يَشْقَى به من لم يكنْ بجَزوع

    Your two brothers are distraught, for this is an occasion

    That brings misery to one not stoic

  10. أن التجلُّدَ في المصاب تطبُّعٌ

    والحزنُ شيءٌ في النفوس طبيعي

    To be steadfast in calamity may be a trait

    While grief is something natural in souls

  11. وإذا صدقتُ فانَّ عينَ أبيكما

    قد خَبَّرَتْ عن قلبِه الصدوع

    And if I am truthful, then the eye of your father

    Has spoken of his shattered heart

  12. شيخوخةٌ ما كان أحوجَها إلى

    شملٍ تُسَرُّ بقربِهِ مجموع

    An old age that was most in need

    Of the company that gladdens a gathered group

  13. وبحَسْبِ " أحمدَ " لوعة "أنَّ ابنهُ "

    " لبس الغروبَ ولم يَعُدْ لطلوع"

    And it suffices that “Ahmad” has the agony that “his son”

    “Wore the sunset and did not return for the dawn”

  14. لو تأذنون سألتُهُ عن خاطرٍ

    مُبْكٍ يَهُزُّ فؤادَ كلِّ مَروع

    If you would permit me, I would ask him

    About a grieving thought that shakes every frightened heart

  15. أعرفْتَ في ساعاتِ عُمْركَ موقِفاً

    بَعَثَ الشُّجونَ كساعةِ التوديع؟

    Have you ever known in your life, father

    A situation that stirred sorrow like the moment of parting?

  16. إني رأيت القولَ غيرَ مرَّفهٍ

    لكن رأيتُ الصمتَ غيرَ بديع

    I saw speech unbefitting, yet silence uneloquent

    So my poem came to convey the torments of my grief

  17. فأتتك تُعْرِبُ عن كوامنِ لوعتي

    مقطوعةٌ هي آهةُ الموجوع
