My she-camel and her newborn foal I ransom for Ibn Badr's son,

And he says, “Nay, but my people I ransom for him.”

It heals and then from behind its healing bitterly burns

The chests of men, so hot it boils.

It mounts the smooth-backed steeds, nor weak,

Nor shirking from its neighbor is the twisting rope.

When on the day the clouds unleashed the morning downpour,

Resembling the legs of locusts with its shower of arrows.

They refused to stand and meet the levelled lances,

And bared Shagar, granting every legged creature death.

So they gained naught on the day the rain poured down,

When our horsemen saw the foemen's weakness.
