ما أَنتَ يا عَنّابُ مِن رَهطِ حاتِمٍ
وَلا مِن رَوابي عُروَةَ بنِ شَبيبِ
You are not, O ʿAnnāb, of Ḥātim’s clan,
nor from the noble heights of ʿUrwa ibn Shabīb.
رَأَينا قُروماً مِن جَديلَةَ أَنجَبوا
وَفَحلُ بَني نَبهانَ غَيرُ نَجيبِ
We have seen noble sires of Jadīla beget noble offspring,
but Banū Nabhān’s stallion is no thoroughbred.
