إِذا ذَكَرَت نَفسي شَريكاً تَقَطَّعَت

عَلى مَضرَحِيٍّ لِلمَقامَةِ رائِسِ

If my soul remembers a partner, it is cut to pieces

On the couch of one settled at home for conversation

وَكانَ أَخا المَولى إِذا خافَ عَثرَةً

شَريكٌ وَخَصمَ الأَصيَدِ المُتَشاوِسِ

And he was the protector's brother when he feared a stumble

A partner and rival to the shyest of prey

فَما كانَ أَبلانا مِنَ الدَهرِ نَبوَةً

لَدى البابِ أَو عَضَّ السِنينَ الأَحامِسِ

Thus they were not, our stalwarts, prophets of fate

At the gate or gnawed at by the decades, the voracious

لَقَد غادَروا بِالعيصِ عِلقَ مَضِنَّةٍ

وَلَم تَرَ عَيني مِثلَهُ عِلقَ لابِسِ

Indeed they left with the stave, a flock with a shepherd

And my eyes have not seen the like of him, a shepherd wearing

وَقالوا أَلا تَبكي تَميمٌ أَخاهُمُ

أَبا الصَلتِ زَينَ الوَفدِ سَمَّ الفَوارِسِ
