أَكُلِّفتَ تَصعيدَ الحُدوجِ الرَوافِعِ
كَأَنَّ خَبالي بَعدَ بُرءٍ مُراجِعي
You were tasked with building high walls
As if my ruins were being rebuilt after decay
قِفا نَعرِفِ الرَبعَينِ بَينَ مُلَيحَةٍ
وَبُرقَةِ سُلمانينَ ذاتِ الأَجارِعِ
Stop, let's get to know the two encampments between beautiful Mulayha
And the lightening of Sulayman's place of caves
سَقى الغَيثُ سُلمانينَ وَالبُرَقَ العُلا
إِلى كُلِّ وادٍ مِن مُلَيحَةَ دافِعِ
The rain watered Sulayman and lightening struck the summits
To every valley of Mulayha it cascaded
أَرَجَّعتَ مِن عِرفانِ رَبعٍ كَأَنَّهُ
بَقِيَّةُ وَشمٍ في مُتونِ الأَشاجِعِ
You returned from knowing the land as if it were
Remnants of scent in the pages of treasured books
مَتى أَنتَ مُهتاجٌ بِحِلمِكَ بَعدَما
وَصَلتَ بِهِ حَبلَ القَرينِ المُنازِعِ
When will you be forebearing with your patience after
You have tied the rope of your close companion
إِذا ما رَجا الظَمآنُ وِردَ شَريعَةٍ
ضَرَبنَ حِبالَ المَوتِ دونَ الشَرائِعِ
When the thirsty hopes for a drink from the well
He strikes the ropes of death without following customs
إِذا قُلنَ لَيسَت لِلرِجالِ أَمانَةٌ
وَفَينا فَلَم نَنقُض عُهودَ الوَدائِعِ
When they say men have no honesty
And we were unfaithful, we did not break the pacts of trust
سَقَينَ البَشامَ المِسكَ ثُمَّ رَشَفنَهُ
رَشيفَ الغُرَيرِيّاتِ ماءَ الوَقائِعِ
We gave the night rain pure wine then sipped it
The choice wine of momentous events
لَقَد هاجَ هاذا الشَوقُ عَيناً مَريضَةً
وَنَوحُ الحَمامِ الصادِحاتِ السَواجِعِ
Indeed this longing has stirred up a sick eye
And the lament of doves, the passionate mourners
فَذَكَّرنَ ذا الإِعوالِ وَالشَوقِ ذِكرَهُ
فَهَيَّجنَ ما بَينَ الحَشا وَالأَضالِعِ
They reminded the passionate and the longing one of his memory
So they stirred what was between vital organs and ribs
أَلَم تَكُ قَد خَبَّرتَ إِن شَطَّتِ النَوى
بِأَنَّكَ يَوماً عِندَها غَيرُ جازِعِ
Did you not tell when the cooking pot boiled
That one day with it you will not despair
فَلَمّا اِستَقَلّوا كِدتَ تَهلِكُ حَسرَةً
وَراعَتكَ إِحدى المُفظِعاتِ الرَوائِعِ
When they left you almost perished from sorrow
And one of the tremendous calamities watched over you
سَمَت بِيَ مِن شَيبانَ أُمٌّ نَزيعَةٌ
كَذالِكَ ضَربُ المُنجِباتِ النَزائِعِ
A grieving mother shot me from Shayban
Such is the way of dedicated archers
فَلَمّا سَقَيتُ السُمَّ خِنزيرَ تَغلِبٍ
أَبا مالِكٍ جَدَّعتُ قَينَ الصَعاصِعِ
So when I gave poison to the boar of Taghlib
The father of Malik, I broke the legs of misfortunes
رَمَيتُ ذَوي الأَضغانَ حَتّى تَناذَروا
حِمايَ وَأَلقى قَوسَهُ كُلُّ نازِعِ
I shot those of hostile tendencies until they warned each other
My protector and each rival loosened his bow
فَإِنّي بِكَيِّ الناظِرينِ كِلَيهِما
طَبيبٌ وَأَشفي مَن نَسا المُتَظالِعِ
For with the tears of both beholders I am
A healer, and cure those who forget the watchful
إِذا ما اِستَضافَتني الهُمومُ قَرَيتُها
زِماعي وَلَيلَ الذامِلاتِ الهَوابِعِ
When worries host me, I recite to them
My will, and the night of formidable calamities
حَراجيجَ يُعلَفنَ الذَميلَ كَأَنَّها
مَعاطِفُ نَبعٍ أَو حَنِيُّ الشَراجِعِ
Saddlebags feeding the camel as if they were
Garments of a spring or bending branches
إِذا بَلَّغَ اللَهُ الخَليفَةَ لَم تُبَل
سِقاطَ الرَزايا مِن حَسيرٍ وَظالِعِ
When Allah appoints the Caliph, the downfalls of troubles will not be revealed
From dejected or rising destinations
سَمَونا إِلى بَحرِ البُحورِ وَلَم نَسِر
إِلى ثَمَدٍ مِن مُعرِضِ العَينِ قاطِعِ
We flew to the sea of seas but did not travel
To any harbor averting its gaze
تَؤُمُّ عِظامَ الجَمِّ عادِيَةَ الجَبا
عَلى الطُرُقِ المُستَورَداتِ المَهايِعِ
The bones of the multitude come together on roads
Covered in panic and terror
فَلَمّا اِلتَقى وَفدا مَعَدٍّ عَرَضتَهُم
بِسِجلَينِ مِن آذِيِّكَ المُتَدافِعِ
So when the delegation of Ma'ad was exposed to you
With two registers of your advancing troops
وَأَنتَ اِبنُ أَعياصٍ تَمَكَّنَ في الذُرى
وَأَنتَ اِبنُ سَيلِ الراسِياتِ الفَوارِعِ
And you are the son of A'yas who took hold in homelands
And you are the son of the pouring rivers of calamities
عَلَوتَ مِنَ الأَعياصِ في مُتَمَنِّعٍ
مُقايَسَةً طالَت مِدادَ المُذارِعِ
You rose above A'yas in an unassailable manner
An extended lineage competing lineages
فَلَمّا تَسَربَلتَ الخِلافَةَ أَقبَلَت
عَلَيكَ بِأَبوابِ الأُمورِ الجَوامِعِ
When you wore the garments of the Caliphate, it turned to you
With the comprehensive doors of all matters
تَبَحبَحَ هَذا المُلكُ في مُستَقَرِّهِ
فَلَيسَ إِلى قَومٍ سِواكُم بِراجِعِ
This kingdom became established in its abode
Thus, it will not return to any people but you
وَضارَبتُمُ حَتّى شَفَيتُم مِنَ العَمى
قُلوباً وَحَتّى جازَ نَقشُ الطَوابِعِ
You struck until you healed blindness from hearts
And the carvings of destined writings came to pass
فَقَد سَرَّني أَن لا يَزالَ يَزيدُكُم
يَسيرُ بِأَمرِ الأُمَّةِ المُتَتابِعِ
It delighted me that the easy course of the nation's affairs
Will continuously increase through you
أَتَتكَ قُرَيشٌ لاجِئينَ وَغَيرُهُم
إِلى كُلِّ دِفءٍ مِن جَناحِكَ واسِعِ
Quraysh came to you as refugees, and others
To every warmth from your encompassing wing
وَيَرجو أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ وَسَيبَهُ
مَراضيعُ مِثلُ الريشِ سُفعُ المَدامِعِ
And the leader of the faithful and his sword are hoped for
By new mothers like soft feathers with flowing tears
