O eye, pour forth tears stirred by memories;
O eye, shed copious tears in memory
For none of your tears should be saved for a later day.
Of times gone by, when tears could comfort me
Indeed, the caliph's virtues have been hidden away
Alas the Caliph now lies in his grave
By a dust-grey grave, with a burial niche and a bend in its side.
A dusky tomb his noble form doth hide
His sons, their calamity grown grievous, have become
And orphans weep as stars fade from the skies
Like stars from whose midst the moon has fallen.
When darkness veils the moon’s radiant light
They were present, yet none warded off his death:
Our heroes strived to thwart cruel fate’s decree
Neither Abd al-Aziz, nor Rawh, nor Umar,
Yet life nor wealth could Abdul Aziz save
Nor Khalid. Had Time desired his ransom,
And Khalid, had he ransomed his own life
They would have laid a costly wager, if the stake could be accepted.
Would have risked all, if sacrifice could save
Indeed, al-Abbas's alarm left me wasted with fear
When news reached Abbas, dread and horror shook me
When the news reached him at the monastery of al-Qastal.
At the cloister of Castile, my heart was sore
