Oh, wish the campsite at al-Ufaqayn peace;
Lo! Say to the tribe in all regions, "Peace be upon you,
It is greeted from afar, though it is not spoken to.
Though you spoke not a word of greeting."
Whoever is granted the love of beautiful women is
He who is given love of maidens, he then
Rich; whoever they deny their love is deprived.
Is wealthy, and he who is deprived of love is deprived.
Today you frightened unsuspecting wild creatures away from us,
Today you frightened upon us wildly
And drove Mustami's wild creatures from their ruined camps.
And you startled the savage from its ruins, alarmed.
Sons of Abd Amr, I have turned my full attention to you;
O clan of Abd Amr, I am through with you,
Long have I rebuked you—if only my earlier warnings had restrained you.
Though long has been my warning, had you but heeded.
Sons of Abd Amr, your palms have been struck
O clan of Abd Amr, the palms of your hands
By splinters of a spear-shaft whose crookedness was never straightened.
Have been struck by the injuries of a canal not to be repaired.
Hizzan indeed sent Jafna as an envoy;
Hizam sent hither Jafnah as a visitor,
He returned and gave his people the worst of spoils.
But he returned and brought his folk the worst of booty.
So, rider of the long-legged she-camel, what will you do
So rider of the sand-dune, what will you do
With Hizzan, now that I have plunged them into the worst of battles?
With Hizam, now that I have joined them in the worst conjoining?
For the sons of Hizzan, when I struck them down,
When I repulsed the clan of Hizam,
Were hyraxes squealing beneath a ruined cave.
They were writhing like snakes in a crumbled cave.
When it passes over the heart of the wilderness, bearing down
When Mudar's she-camel breasted the barren tract,
On Hizzan's hyraxes, not one utters a sound.
No Hizami on the plain was left moaning.
Hizzan's slave howled in misery, for he had fallen
Abd Hizam met misery, so he met it.
From a great height; his hands could not reach a ladder.
His hands reached not the rungs of a ladder.
