O man who lets his turban hang loose,
O you who let down his turban,
This is your time; indeed, my time has already passed.
This is your time, mine has passed.
Tell our caliph, if you meet him,
Tell our caliph, if you meet him,
that I am at the gate, like a captive bound with a cord.
That I stand by the gate like one fettered.
Do not forget our need—may you find forgiveness.
Forget not our need if you would find forgiveness.
My stay away from my family and my homeland has grown long.
Long has been my absence from kin and home.
