1. The companions departed on the morning of parting,

And your soul had not fulfilled its desires.

  2. So do not prolong your wavering doubt,

And fasten their saddles upon the pale camels.

  3. I shall drive them through the dust-dark passes,

And we shall abandon Hind and her visitors.

  4. Ah, may God disgrace, on the day of al-Zubayr,

The smiths' exploits and their tales!

  5. For we found the son of Jawkha, of the smiths,

Base on the battlefields, a coward there.

  6. And were the smith given a choice between life

And death, he would surely choose it.

  7. Did you sleep with your eye upon disgrace?

Then lower its lashes over humiliation.

  8. And the clan of Malik well knows

    Al-Duhaym's halting-place and her lot-casters.

  9. We took, despite weakness—as you know—

The kings' deputies and their kin by marriage.

  10. And we spare them—yet they give no thanks—

The rigors of wars and the harm they bring.

  11. I am the son of the horsemen on the day of al-Ghabit,

And the newly foaled mares did not recognize their foals.

  12. We caught up with Abjar and al-Hawfazan,

While the horses had spread their whirlwind.

  13. And many a king's banner, like an eagle's shadow—

We struck its tyrant upon the head.

  14. And whenever a battle's tumult loomed,

We would wade through its depths toward death.

  15. So you have utterly ruined Taghlib,

And brought ill luck upon the smiths and their bellows.

  16. And the horsemen fought in defense on the day of al-Kuhayl,

Yet Taghlib did not defend its rear.

  17. You abandoned to Qays the purebred stallion's daughters,

And the mature women and the maidens among them.

  18. At Hazza you laid down the burden of arms,

While war had not laid down its burdens.

  19. For, were all mankind gathered,

You would find Taghlib the worst among them.

  20. And even if the people became warring foes

Of Qays and Khindif, they would do them no harm.

  21. We seized, against you, the springs of the great waters,

And the country's dry land and its cities.

  22. And we inherited—so clear the way—

The cisterns of 'Ad and their wells.

  23. And I call upon God, while you call upon the cross,

And I call upon Quraysh and their supporters.

  24. They spared squint-eyed Taghlib the task of aiding the Messenger,

And of unraveling affairs and twisting them tight.
