We were bereaved of Ibn Ghalib, bearer of blood-money obligations,
We mourn the bearer of blood-money, son of Galib
And defender of Tamim's honor and hurler of taunts.
And protector of Tamim's honor and war-steeds
We wept for you when parting was still fresh; yet it was only
We cried for you as newcomers to farewell
When grave calamities struck that we wept for you.
Yet truly we cried when matters of glory declined
So may no dowered woman conceive after Ibn Layla,
No mare hence bore after Layla's son glory
Nor may the girths of swift-striding camels be tightened.
Nor girded the riding-beasts for major events
