1. Do you visit Umm Muhammad, or forsake her?

Or has some of what you remember returned to your heart?

  2. Indeed, if the great, aged ibex heard her words,

The ibex of ʿAmayatayn would keep descending.

  3. Do not forget your forbearance: what you have with them

Is destined, and you cannot outstrip what is decreed.

  4. Cares travelled by night with the stars, imposing

Tasks laid upon the fleet, lean she-camels.

  5. They are the rescue when night travel grows terrifying,

And when the mighty lion blazes in the uplands.

  6. They cast their young prematurely at six months,

    Like chicks, their skins quivering.

  7. Al-Baʿith claimed, 'I am Baybah's son.'

Al-Baʿith lied, and his nose is peeling.

  8. You are al-Baʿith, in whom servitude plainly shows,

And your father is a slave of Banu Zurah—a coarse fool.
