1. Was not Taym's reviling—may you have no father!—

of the sons of Zayd a grievous outrage?

  2. When noble men are traced to their father,

Taym has no stock from a noble father.

  3. Taym does not dwell in a frontier land,

nor is Taym appointed arbiter in disputes.

  4. It shames you to say, 'I am a son of Taym,'

and Taym is the ultimate in ignoble pedigree.

  5. The stamp of noble men and the stamp of Taym stand revealed,

like the minting of Daybuli coins and debased coins.

  6. And Taym is disgraced because Taym's stock

is far removed from the stock of the sons of Tamim.

  7. When the crescent moons appear, O son of Taym,

when the thoroughbreds strain against their bits.

  13. And you are driven from your dwelling, O son of Taym,

and you do not repel the oppressor's onslaught.

  15. The sons of co-wives have mutilated you,

yet you are the chick of one barren woman.

  16. Had Ibn Shayba known Taym's baseness,

they would not have circled Zamzam and al-Hatim.

  17. I forbade Taym folly, and long was

my forbearance; I awaited men of sound judgment.

  18. So whoever blames Taym this morning—

they have indeed taken the place of the blameworthy.

and my clouds rain torment upon them.

  20. You see the heroes wounded, while Taym

have skin intact, without a trace of wounds.

  21. Taym has no honor of recent date,

nor does Taym have honor from of old.

and it is formed in wombs and placentas.

  23. You see the Taymi crawl like a beetle

toward a black woman like the back of an adze.

  24. If a Taymi comes as your guest, make ready

for a low-bred mare with ravenous jowls.

  25. On arriving, he complained of a slave's cracked skin,

and brought both palms close to the blazing fire.

  26. For Amr is our uncle, and I am a son of Zayd;

how noble the fathers and the uncles!

  27. And in clientage you find Sa'd over you,

heavy of tread, bending their foes low.

  28. The primary feathers were not made like the tail feathers,

nor were clients made equal to the trueborn.

  29. He who guards Qays's honor protects you,

and he who stands among the chieftains of Tamim.
