1. It has indeed pleased me that Mujashi' counts nothing

Among its boasts but the hamstringing of an old she-camel at Saw'ar.

  2. Is it your old she-camel, or men whose swords shatter

Upon the skulls, both folds of the arrogant man's helmet?

  3. By my life, Nahshal are indeed excellent protectors,

And a hospitable tribe for the night visitor seeking firelight.

  4. Horsemen who do not call on Mujashi' for help,

When she of the curtained canopy steps into the open.

  5. By my life, Hilal ibn 'Amir was indeed slain

At the water basin of al-Mirba', by al-Mujashshar's kinsmen.

  6. And ever since Nahshal did not answer you, you have kept

    Encountering unmixed humiliation—so be patient.

  7. And the sons of Shayban have spurned the pool of Mujashi',

And Shayban are people of clear water, unmuddied.

  8. Had Nahshal grown angry over the matter of Hadra',

They would have assailed her with black steeds, or raided her with eagles.

  9. Had the neighbor of Mujashi' settled among Riyah,

He would not have spent the night a hostage to the deep-dug well.

  10. Nor did knots of hope lure them away from their vengeance,

And there is no pledge but that of a neighbor ready for action.

  11. And indeed it has pleased me that Mujashi' counts nothing

Among its glories but the hamstringing of an old she-camel at Saw'ar.

  12. And you are smiths, hammering out our swords,

While with them we stand defiant on every renowned day of battle.

  13. Horsemen who charge again and again into the thick of battle,

When she of the curtained canopy comes out.
