1. Indeed al-Muhajir, when he opens his hand,

    is supple-fingered, long of forearm.

  2. A radiant chief: when fortunes decline,

    he rises above adversity with an ascending fortune.

  3. O son of branches nourished by rich soil,

    and son of horsemen and the commanding chief,

  4. a protector who defends the inviolable and the guarded lands—

    may you never lack his protection as a defender.

  5. You have indeed judged, and your judgment proved convincing,

    and you were created an adornment to pulpits and mosques.

  6. And when litigants hastened to his doors,

    he did not overlook their absent party in favor of a present opponent.

  7. And the aggressors, when they saw you, grew submissive,

    fearing the onslaught of a wrathful, matted-maned lion.

  8. I praise you when you settle in their land,

    and when you depart, with the praise of a grateful neighbor.

  9. My Lord gave you from His abundant bounty,

    until you were content, and the envier's abasement was prolonged.

  10. Your chosen forefathers, possessors of lavish gifts—

    their fire-sticks kindled in a noble man's two hands.

  11. He left the disobedient humbled under his rule,

    and the aggressors, and every rebellious thief.

  12. Clear-sighted therein, following the faith of guidance,

    rejoice in the station of one who dwells forever.

  13. He proved his valor at Burjama, where death was dreaded,

    in the days of a warrior seeking divine reward for hardship.

  14. How often you have restored me and favored me with honor,

    and defended me from a relentless enemy.

  15. Had they been able, but for the trials you inflicted on them,

    you would have been made to drink the venom of speckled serpents and black snakes.

  16. O slayer of winters for us, whenever

    evening grows chill with the cold late afternoon.
