    And when Dariyya's valley was the finest valley?

  3. If only the reproaching women would cease blaming me,

    And if only sorrow had ceased revisiting me.

  4. We see water to drink, its watering-places sweet,

    Yet we are denied it, while our hearts thirst for it.

  5. Little reaches you from Sulayma,

    Despite long closeness and separation.

  6. I castrated Mujashi', and pressed my foot down hard

    Upon Taghlib's necks, bearing down with my weight.

  7. Al-Ukhaytil has made no headway against my rock,

    While I have shattered the rock of whoever I fight.

  8. Do you rule for the smiths? You lie! Indeed, we

    Inherited glory before the legacy of 'Ad.

  9. And Yarbu' are horsemen who never waver,

    When the coward hangs back from mounted combat.

  10. The smiths were not seen the morning we terrified

    Banu Dhuhl and the clan of Banu Masad.

  11. And we terrified the horsemen of Bishr's house,

    At Dhat al-Shih, among the paths of al-Iyad.

  12. Al-Hudhayl was captive among us, yet you did not rally

    With a defender that day, nor anyone to ransom him.

  13. He struggles with the shackle of a brown Samhari spear,

    Taking short steps, submissive to the rein.

  14. And al-Ukhaytil's clansmen, when he called them,

    Were neither bright-browed at evening nor curly-haired.

  15. The Taghlibi sleeps and does not pray,

    And spends the morning with his pillow unraised.

  16. A people sprouting from the worst seed,

    And bad seed is found in the harvest.
