1. إني غير مختار وفارق مضطرا

    ولم يك لما عاش في نفسه حرا

    I am not free to choose, forced to part

    He did not live as he wished in his soul freely

  2. وهل جعلوا منه الدماغ برأيه

    ليقبل ديناً أو ليجتنب الكفرا

    Did they make his brain with his opinion

    To accept a religion or shun blasphemy?

  3. ولو أنه اسطاع الكلام بقبره

    لقال اتركوني إنني أحمد القبرا

    If he could speak from his grave

    He would say "Leave me be, I now love the grave"

  4. له قد حلا الموت الذي قد حماه من

    أذاه على عهد الحياة الذي مرا

    Death which protected him from

    The hurt in life he once bore has come

  5. لقد قدم الدنيا بغير اختياره

    وسافر منغير اختيار إلى الأخرى

    He entered the world without his choice

    And travelled without choice to the next

  6. أمالك يوم الدين كن راحم به

    فإن الذي قد جاءه جاءه قسرا

    O Owner of the Day of Judgement, be merciful to him

    What came to him came to him by force

  7. سل العبد عما جاء قبل جزائه

    لعل له عذراً لعل له عذرا

    Ask the slave before his punishment

    In case he has an excuse, in case he has one

  8. فأنت الذي بالخير كنت أمرته

    وأنت الذي قدرت أن يعصى الأمرا

    You who ordered good, have mercy

    And you who destined that your order be disobeyed

  9. ترأف ولا تقذف بنار جهنم

    فتى غير مسطيع على حرها صبرا

    Do not cast one unable to endure hellfire

    Into hellfire, he cannot endure its heat patiently

  10. لقد طال ليل المؤمن القانع الذي

    ثوى في ظلام القبر ينتظر الفجرا

    The long night has passed for the content believer

    Lying in the darkness of his grave, awaiting dawn

  11. يؤمل بعد الموت عود حياته

    فقد وعدوه بعد طي له نشرا

    After death, hoping for his life's return

    Since the promise of his burial and opening has been made

  12. أيحيا أمرؤ في القبر ميتاً وإنما

    يموت الذي يحيا إذا سكن القبرا

    Can one lifeless in a grave live?

    Only one alive dies when he settles into a grave

  13. وكل امرئٍ يدرى شؤون حياته

    وأما الذي بعدَ الحياة فلا يُدرى

    And every person knows the affairs of his life

    As for what comes after life, it is not known

  14. وكم غاصبٍ مال اليتامى مبكر

    لأجل صلاة الصبح يرجو بها الأجرا

    How many who stole the wealth of orphans in haste

    Hoping to gain rewards through the dawn prayer?

  15. سرى في ظلام الليل يطلب جاره

    ليسرق ما يقنو فسبحان من أسرى

    He walked in the darkness of night seeking his neighbor

    To steal the wealth he secured - Glory to He who decreed

  16. يصلى جهاراً في بياض نهاره

    ويسرق مال الناس في ليله سرا

    He prays loudly in the brightness of his day

    And steals people's money secretly in his night

  17. أيُلقى رنان في الجحيم وبخنر

    وداروين من عن أصلنا كشف السترا

    Will Rinnan and Darwin who uncovered our origin's mystery

    Be cast into hell with their bodies and souls languishing?

  18. مخلدة أرواحهم وجسومهم

    هناك يقاسون المهانة والحرّا

    There, suffering humiliation and heat

    When their skin is fried, He will create them other skin

  19. إذا نضجت بالنار فيها جلودهم

    حباهم جلوداً قهر بارئهم أخرى

    While Immad al-Din is rewarded with paradise

    When all that came to him was shame

  20. ويحظى عماد الدين منا بجنة

    وكان الذي قد جاءه كله نكرا

    Since he usurped Sufyan’s wealth and attacked

    A truthful one and his villainy killed Umar too

  21. فقد بزّ أموالاً لسفيان واعتدى

    على صادق واغتال من خبثه عمرا

    Remember your deeds before death, yes

    Immad al-Din repented, even if remembrance does not benefit

  22. تذكر قبل الموت أفعاله نعم

    وتاب عماد الدين لو تنفع الذكرى

    Is this Immad al-Din not the one who attacked

    People with fires - if they were to be fair?

  23. أليس عماد الدين هذا الذي عدا

    على الناس بالنيران لو أنصفوا أحرى

    He passes over prayer and has told

    A narrative about a ram whose liver he wants to read

  24. يمر على ظهر الصلاة وقد حكى

    حساماً على كبش يريد به عبرا

    A path thin as hair with hell raging

    Beneath it - how can one endure this immense heat?

  25. صراط طويل دقَّ كالشعر متنه

    وتحت الصراط النار قد سُعرت سَعرا

    So you passer above the path, I fear

    This ram throws you into the great abyss

  26. فيا عابراً فوق الصراط أخاف أن

    يزجَّك هدا الكبش في الهوة الكبرى

    Gently, O you - what you have spoken

    Does not please this era’s religion or logic

  27. رويدك يا هذا فإن الذي به

    تكلمتَ لا يُرضى الديانة والعصرا

    Do you not know that the people of our times

    Have enlightened religion with their thoughts?

  28. ألم تدر أن الناس في عصرنا الذي

    نعيش به بالدين قد نوَّروا الفكرا

    Think a little regarding what you have said

    For that, if not blasphemy, is worse than it

  29. تفكَّر قليلا في مقال ذكرتَه

    فذلك فوق الكفر إن لم يكن كفرا

    You are ignorant of God's choice - He tortures

    Some and grants others favor and gifts

  30. جهلت اختيار اللَه فهو معذَّب

    لبعض ومعطى البعض من فضله أجرا

    We are a people averse to hearing blasphemy

    Ringing in our ears, and we stop it

  31. ألا فاعتقد ما شئت إنا عصابة

    ترى عن سماع الكفر في أذننا وقرا

    Our religion gives us glory among humanity

    And pride in faith among all peoples

  32. وإن لنا بالدين في الناس سؤددا

    وإن لنا بالدين بين الورى فخرا

    Every nation worships a Creator

    Acknowledged by nations who have settled

  33. وما أمة إلا تدين بصانعٍ

    يُقر بذا من للشعوب قد استقرى

    We are content with Allah's religion

    Worshipping Him for ages - not worshipping time

  34. رضينا بدين اللَه ديناً وإنما

    عبدناه أعصاراً ولم نعبد الدهرا

    I saw a beautiful girl on the road

    Her glances striking me straight as an arrow

  35. رأيت فتاة في الطريق جميلة

    تسدد من ألحاظها نظراً شزرا

    She uncovered her face from her veil

    I imagined I was looking at the full moon

  36. وقد كشفت عن وجهها من نقابها

    فخيل لي أني به ناظر بدرا

    While people were in prayer

    Engaged in it while the place was empty

  37. على حين كان الناس في صلواتهم

    يؤدونها والملتقى خالياً صفرا

    Are you the one claiming that if we die

    We will not return another time?

  38. أأنت الذي بالزعم تذكر أننا

    إذا ماردينا لم نعد مرة أخرى

    You deny people's resurrection after death

    And refute talk of hashr and nashr in your words

  39. فتنكر بعث الناس من بعد موتهم

    وتجحد في أقوالك الحشر والنشرا

    I said what will prove to us

    That the deceased have a hashr after decay?

  40. فقلت لها يا هذه ما قد يدلنا

    على أن للأموات بعد البلى حشرا

    We have no knowledge proving

    Humans have a hashr after decay

  41. فليس لنا في العلم ما قد يدلُّنا

    على أن للانسان بعد البلى حشرا

    She spoke, the words piercing her heart

    With sorrow, must I silence what you wish to mention?

  42. فقالت وقد حز الكلام فؤادها

    بحزن ألا أقطع ما تريد له ذكرا

    If there was no abode to reward the youth

    The good and evil would then be equal

  43. فلو لم تكن دار يجازى بها الفتى

    تساوى إذن من يفعل الخير والشرا

    When she heard this, she let fall teardrops

    Wetting my cheek, neck and chest

  44. فلما سمعت القول أسبلت أدمعا

    جرت فسقت خدي وجيدي والنحرا

    I regretted what I had neglected with

    My evil faith which led me to blasphemy

  45. ندمت على ما كنت فرطت قبلذا

    بسوء اعتقاد لي إلى الكفر قد جرا

    I have spoken falsely in ignorance

    God forgive me! O my Creator, forgive me!

  46. لقد قلت قولاً باطلاً بجهالة

    والحدت فاللهم يا خالقي غفرا

    I repent what I believed

    If you do not accept my repentance Lord I have lost

  47. فقد تبت عما كنت معتقداً له

    فإن لم تتب ربي على فوا خسرا

    I bear witness that God is my One Lord

    Exalted above any defect staining His Worth

  48. شهدت بأن اللَه ربي واحد

    تنزه عن عيب يشين له قدرا

    In six days He brought creation into being

    On the seventh day firmly seated on His Throne

  49. بستة أيام برا الخلق كله

    وفي سابع الأيام في عرشه قرَّا

    If He willed a thing He said "Be" and so it becomes

    He never sees hardship in what He has willed to be

  50. إذا شاء أمراً قال كن فيكون لا

    يرى أبداً في خلق ما شاءه عُسرا

    Satan made me deviate from the path of guidance

    I inclined to the left though my guide was on my right

  51. أزاغنيَ الشيطان عن منهج الهدى

    وكان يميني فانحرفت إلى اليسرى

    Nothing saddened me like the scene of Gada

    Whose guardian was assassinated by the hand of betrayal

  52. ولَم يشجني شيءٌ كمنظر غادةٍ

    قَد اِغتال كفُّ الظلم حاميها غدرا

    She spent the night confiding her worries like a dove

    Crying through the darkness of night from burning agony

  53. فَباتَت تناجي همها كحمامة

    تَنوح بداجي اللَيل من كبدٍ حرَّى

    She lost her beloved so she raged

    Repeating his name with longing sighs

  54. أَضاعَت نهاراً إلفَها فتبجست

    تجدّ بترداد الهديل له ذكرا

    I saw a mother bereaved of her only child by injustice

    Remaining in endless sorrows and regrets

  55. وأمٍّ أراها الحيفُ قتل وحيدها

    فظلت من الأحزان كاسفة حسرى

    She stood by a loved one torn to pieces

    Scratching her face and chest in anguish

  56. وقامت إلى شاوٍ له متمزّع

    تخمش منها الوجه أو تلدِم الصدرا

    She wrapped him in new woven shrouds

    Buried him and clung to his grave

  57. فلفته في أكفان خزّ جديدة

    ووارته في قبر ولازمت القبرا

    Had her bitter tears not been salty

    Their flow would have brought green life to his grave

  58. ولو لم يكن مِلحاً أجاجاً دموعها

    لأَنبت من تسكابها القبر واخضرا

    Inconsolable but for her doves

    With hardship, then ease she was consoled

  59. مفجعة ليست بغير حِمامها

    تلاقي مع العسر الذي مضها يسرا

    An old woman who refused to live in her house

    After losing her one love, saw it deserted

  60. عجوز أبت أن تسكن الدار إنها

    رأت دارها من بعد واحدها قَفرا

    I looked at the Pleiades in the night so it stirred me

    Its flickering inspiring me to write a poem

  61. نظرت إلى الشِعرى بليلٍ فهاجني

    تلألؤُها حتى نظمت بها شعرا

    I made it brilliant in meaning like them

    So I said “Let the poetry suit the Pleiades”

  62. فكان مضيئاً في معانيد مثلها

    فقلت كذا فليحسن الشعر في الشِعرى

    I came up with it smoothly, pleasant when heard

    Not venturing a difficult path in its composition

  63. أتيت به سهلاً يلذُّ سماعه

    ولم أقتحم في نظمه مسلكا وعرا

    How can the verse of a poet who has seen

    The Gemini stars scattered about him not be sublime?

  64. وكيف ترى لا يَعتلي نظم شاعر

    رأى أنجم الجوزاء في جوِّه نثرا

    As if a ring-bedecked hand adorned itself

    With pearls - how excellent are pearls!

  65. كأن الثريا كف خود تزينت

    خواتيمها بالدر ما أحسن الدرا

    To the west I saw a star with a tail of silver

    Mixed with yellow, like a comet walking gallantly,

  66. عَلى الجانب الغَربيِّ أَبصر كوكباً

    له ذنبٌ من فضة أُشربت تبرا

    Leaving a trace streaking the highest heavens

    As if a hand wrote with luminescent ink

  67. كَما قَد تمشت غادة فلكية

    فأبقت بِعالي الجو من خلفها إِثرا

    A line on the illuminated face of the sky

    It runs seeking the daylight sun as if

  68. كأن عَلى وجه السماء الَّذي صفا

    يداً بمداد النور قد كتبت سطرا

    It had a message to convey - how gentle its orbit!

    Revolving around the sun’s station worshipfully

  69. جرت تبتغي شمس النهار كأنها

    تبلَّغها أمراً فما ألطف المجرى

    Then returning steps none can relate

    Where it goes, none can say

  70. تطوف حوالي كعبة الشمس دورة

    وترجع أدراجاً إلى حيث لا يدرى
