The West's rule on earth has long endured
Submission and acquiescence long in the East
The West is active, chasing its needs
Striving to attain them while the East is lazy
The West takes while the East is ransacked
The West awake while the East slumbers
If the West declines the burdened East will rise
For time, earth and customs are its allies
And from exhaustion it may erupt
As volcanoes erupt from compression
When will claws that restrict be clipped
So that no man tyrannizes another man?
Can accord be hoped for after creeds,
Interests, temperaments and faiths have clashed?
Not angels make peace but the devil ignites war
Whenever he pleases, whatever the cause
Blood freely shed for truth is a price
For it alone brings glory and is precious
Every nation relies on its promises
Yet in the struggle of time all are deserted
Peaceful souls seeking life have perished
Countries desired by them are laid waste
If a man lacks absolute power
Every right he has will be invalidated
Do not oppress an Arab in his homeland
For he is, like you, a human being
Every war-stricken man has suffered disasters
But the Arab today has no solace
Seventy million, descendants of Arabs
Angry with you in the East, O Balfour
In every perplexity, return to conscience
For it alone is the balance of truth
O Fawzi's grave, greetings and ardour
Sent to you by one yearning in Baghdad
Afterwards, poetry whose fragrance was known
As if from the earth's vegetation a balsam
A nightingale trilled high up on a lofty tree
As if its leaves were a divan of verse
In a garden blooming like the eternal paradise
As if its trees were maidens and boys
