1. يا مصر فيك الشعر مات اميره

    وانقض يصرخ تاجه وسريره

    O Egypt, in you poetry died, its prince

    And his crown and throne collapsed

  2. في الصدر منه لاعج صعب على

    غير الدموع ذريفة تصويره

    In the chest because of him is inconsolable grief

    Nothing can portray it except pouring tears

  3. لا يستخف بما يعالج من اسىً

    الا الذي قد مات منه ضميره

    None makes light of what he suffers from anguish

    Except he whose conscience died in him

  4. يا مصر حزنك سوف يبقى لادغا

    حتى يجيئ اليك منك نظيره

    O Egypt, your sorrow will remain stinging

    Until the like of him comes to you from you

  5. قد كنت يا شوقي لمصر كوكبا

    يهدي بنيها للسلامة نوره

    O Shouqi, you were to Egypt a planet

    That gives its sons light to safety

  6. واذا تباطأ عن طلاب حقوقه

    شعب فانك انت كنت تثيره

    And if the seekers of their rights were slow

    You would provoke them

  7. واذا تكبل لم يعز عليك في

    وقت بمالك من يد تحريره

    And if one was shackled you would not care in

    A time what you possess to free him

  8. مالي اراك قد انطفأت لغير ما

    سبب بليل مطبق ديجوره

    Why do I see you put out not because of

    A reason in a very dark night

  9. واذا اراد الله امراً لم يكن

    في وسع عبد عاجز تأخيره

    If God wanted something a helpless slave cannot

    Delay it

  10. والمرء حين يروم نقض قضائه

    لا عقله كاف ولا تدبيره

    And when a person wants to undo His decree

    His mind is not enough nor his plotting

  11. للناس من شعر تركت جمال

    تشدو به من بعدك الاجيال

    Of poetry you left for people beauty

    That generations after you sing

  12. سيقام تمثال لشخصك رائع

    فيكون شعراً ذلك التمثال

    A magnificent statue of you will be erected

    So that statue will be poetry

  13. بالامس كنت لعارفيك حقيقة

    ملموسة واليوم انت خيال

    Yesterday for those who knew you, you were

    Tangible, and today you are a mirage

  14. ولانت مبق في زوالك عندهم

    لك ذكريات ما لهن زوال

    You did not remain in your death to them

    You have memories that do not dissipate

  15. لو كانت الاوقات ذات ضمائر

    لبكى الغدو عليك والآصال

    If time had a conscience

    It would cry over you at dawn and night

  16. بقيت من الاداب او شال لنا

    فوددت ان لا تذهب الاوشال

    You stayed of literature the best crown

    I wished the turbans do not go

  17. ان الحياة لمشكلات كلها

    اما المنون فوحده الحلال

    Life is full of problems

    While death alone is the solution

  18. بعد المنية وهي غير بعيدة

    لا مشكل يبقى ولا اشكال

    After death, which is not far

    No problems or worries remain

  19. لا ويل للميت الذي انفسحت له

    من كل قلب روضة محلال

    Woe to the dead who hugged

    A meadow of permissibleness from every heart

  20. الويل كل الويل للحي الذي

    في نفسه قد ماتت الآمال

    Misery, total misery, to the living

    In whose self hopes died

  21. كثر الألى قد انبوك دفينا

    والباكيات عليك والباكونا

    Many cried over you buried

    And the weeping women and mourners

  22. ما كنت تسمع يوم دفنك في الثرى

    الا نشيجا خانقا وانينا

    You would not hear when buried in the soil

    Except suffocated lamentations and moanings

  23. اكبر بيومك انه يوم به

    قد فجر الحزن العميق عيونا

    Oh departed ones with no return, we

    Cannot stand your separation so take us

  24. يا راحلين لغير عود اننا

    لا نستطيع فراقكم فخذونا

    O visitors of the basin of death before us

    How sweet is the basin you visit

  25. يا واردي حوض المنية قبلنا

    ما اعذب الحوض الذي تردونا

    Walk slowly, if you want stop

    We are following your trails

  26. سيروا خفافا ان اردتم اوقفوا

    انا على آثاركم آتونا

    O house of my hopes, you collapsed but

    I hoped you would be firm

  27. يا بيت آمالي انهدمت وانما

    قد كنت آمل ان تكون رصينا

    I did not know the value of your poetry until

    You exceeded in renewing the improvements

  28. ما كنت اعرف قدر شعرك قبلما

    وفرت في تجديده التحسينا

    You have in the stories you versified chapters

    Of preference that ennobled me

  29. لك في روايات نظمت فصولها

    درجات فضل هن عليّونا

    You used to take risks venturing

    Sometimes and lean to safety others

  30. قد كنت تقتحم الصعاب مغامرا

    حينا وتجنح للسلامة حينا

    In Egypt’s heart and in Al Jazira, oh my friend

    Breaths were about to be cut off

  31. في قلب مصر وبالجزيرة ياس

    كادت به تتقطع الانفاس

    The prince of poetry fell

    And he is the mind and feeling

  32. اهوى من الشعراء رأس شامخ

    والراس فيه الفكر والاحساس

    No woe in the death of some parts

    But the woe is if the head dies

  33. لا ويل في موت بعضو قد طحا

    بل انه في ان يموت الراس

    In every span of land a virtuous died

    Oh misery, all of Egypt’s heads are down

  34. في كل شبر قد توارى فاضل

    يا ويح مصر كلها ارماس

    The prince rode to bid farewell at his coffin

    And death drew near and bells rang

  35. ركب الامير يجد صهوة نعشه

    ودنا الرحيل ورنت الاجراس

    Walked sending off his coffin ardently

    From every doctrine, ethnic group and religion

  36. ومشى يشيع نعشه متلهفا

    من كل حزب امة اجناس

    In a huge march the angels participated humbly

    And so did the people

  37. في موكب ضخم قد اشتركت معاً

    فيه الملائك خشعاً والناس

    They placed the prince of poetry in his narrow abode

    We sighed over him as the box embraces him

  38. وضعوا امير الشعر في ديماسه

    فحنا عليه يضمه الديماس

    I craved over him pillowing him in a

    Secluded hole that has no guards

  39. لهفي عليه موسداً في حفرة

    معزولة ما ان لها حرّاس

    The fires of brilliance faded

    As for the ashes they are piles

  40. وعلى الذكاء فقد خبت نيرانه

    اما الرماد فانه اكداس

    The great demise of the chanter

    Made anemones and buds weep

  41. الزهر اكبر مصرع الصيداح

    فبكت عليه شقائق واقاح

    In the garden of sorrows he became a scene

    That was not there before for joys

  42. في الروض للاحزان اصبح مشهداً

    ما كان قبلا منه للافراح

    How the flowers listened to his melody

    In a white night with bands

  43. كم اصغت الازهار فيه للحنه

    في ليلة بيضاء ذات وشاح

    The nightingales of poetry circled his generous palm tree a while

    With fervor not found with others

  44. طافت بكرمته الجميلة برهة

    شعراء عن وجد بهم ملحاح

    Their relationship with him in its shade

    Was like bodies with spirits

  45. كانت علاقتهم به في ظلها

    كعلاقة الاجساد بالارواح

    Dawn emerged from your ode masked

    And dawn I recognize from glimpses

  46. اطلعت صبحاً من قريضك مسفراً

    والصبح اعرفه من الاوضاح

    You were the first poet who gave people guidance

    In what came from the tablets

  47. قد كنت اول شاعر بثّ الهدى

    للناس فيما جاء من الواح

    As for paying you visit it became

    Prohibited with no literature reforms

  48. اما يراعك فهو معزوّله

    ما تم للآداب من اصلاح

    O planet whose light wiped

    The rust of darkness better than a duster

  49. يا كوكبا قد كان يمحو نوره

    صدأ الدجى احسن به من ماح

    You faded and there is no reason

    Except oil running out in the lantern

  50. لقد انطفأت وما هنالك موجب

    الا نفاد الزيت في المصباح

    From every flower I gathered some

    And made for his grave a wreath

  51. من كل زهر قد جمعت قليلا

    وجعلت منه لقبره اكليلا

    I collected it in a delightful bouquet

    After detailing it part by part

  52. اجملته في باقة خلابة

    من بعد ما فصلته تفصيلا

    You would think it a planet’s white rays

    And imagine its red his spilt blood

  53. فتظن ابيضا اشعة كوكب

    وتخال احمرها دما مطلولا

    We were three swords for the battle

    I was the broken third

  54. كنا سيوفا للقراع ثلاثة

    نحمي فكنت الثالث المفلولا

    Oh self show more strength

    Or else I fear your long night

  55. يا نفس اورى من اساك ذبالة

    فاخاف ليلك ان يكون طويلا

    They carried him from his majestic palace

    Glorious, how great is the carried

  56. حملوه من قصر له فخم الا

    ملحودة ما اعظم المحمولا

    Behind the litters, wailing women

    Fill the space with cries

  57. ولقد شجت خلف الضعائن نسوة

    يملأن اجواز الفضاء عويلا

    Oh burier of the polished sword I see you

    Questioned about what you came for

  58. يا دافن السيف المذّرب انني

    لأراك عما جئته مسؤولا

    Why did you miss the day of horrors spared him

    When you sheathed the polished blade

  59. ماذا ليوم الروع عنه اعتضته

    لما غمدت الصارم المصقولا

    No, by He who gave the few courage

    I was not dishonored or cowardly

  60. لا والذي اعطى القليل شجاعة

    ما كنت خوارا ولا اجفيلا

    The garden after the singing nightingale

    Is no more smiling to its visitors

  61. ما الروض بعد البلبل المترنم

    للناظرين اليه بالمتبسم

    As if its anemones, daisies

    Chamomile and myrtle are in bereavement

  62. فكأنما نسرينه وشقيقه

    وخزامه وعراره في مأتم

    Life is fancy and none succeeds

    In indulging in it but the educated

  63. ان الحياة وغى وليس بظافر

    في خوضها غير الكمى المعلم

    I shot all my arrows

    So I dropped my bow and arrows from my hand

  64. اني لقد طاشت سهامي كلها

    فرميت قوسي من يدى واسهمي

    Death looks at me and smiles baring

    His fang like the arrogant giant

  65. الموت ينظرني ويبسم كاشرا

    عن نابه كالمارد المتهكم

    And when I look at the graves I find them

    Like an army’s remnants scattered on the plain

  66. واذا نظرت الى القبور وجدتها

    كفلول جيش في العراء مخيم

    Send their people if they respond to a questioner

    And make your ink, oh shepherd, from my blood

  67. راسل ذويها لو اجابوا سائلا

    واجعل مدادك يا يراعي من دمى

    Ask them: Are they comfortable in their life

    Or are they bored and frustrated

  68. سلهم أهم في سلوة من عيشهم

    ام انهم في ضجرة المتبرم

    Happier are the elegant souls saved from evil

    They ascended in the sky’s breadth like stars

  69. اسعد بارواح نجون من الردى

    فطلعن في عرض السماء كانجم

    I learned all the laws of life

    As for life itself it did not learn

  70. علمت نواميس الحياة جميعها

    اما الحياة فانها لم تعلم

    I walked between sights and tears

    Crossing from a spring to a spring

  71. قد سرت بين نواظر ودموع

    تجتاز ينبوعا الى ينبوع

    The farewells were very painful

    And the hardest was the moment of bidding adieu

  72. كانت احايين الفراق شديدة

    واشد منها ساعة التوديع

    And the people behind the coffin walking silently

    In shiver and humility

  73. والشعب خلف النعش يمشي صامتا

    في رعشة تنتابه وخشوع

    A hand on an eye of those with vision

    And a hand on a heart of those with agony

  74. فيد على عين له ذرافةذ

    ويد على قلب له مصدوع

    As for talking it was all whispers

    Nothing of it was heard

  75. اما الكلام فكان همسا كله

    لا شيء فيهم منه بالمسموع

    Whoever of them lagged a step

    His tears reached bidding him farewell before him

  76. من كان منهم قد تأخر خطوه

    سبقته ادمعه الى التشييع

    My heart will keep disturbing in the chests

    Until my tears flow with the procession

  77. سيظل قلبي في الجوانح مزعجي

    حتى تسيل مع الركاب دموعي

    The multitudes who bid him farewell all returned

    Except the bereaved’s pouring tears

  78. رجع الألى قد شيعوه كلهم

    الا دموع الثاكل المفجوع

    I did not know when the news of his death was announced to me

    What afflicted the heart beneath my ribs

  79. لم ادر ساعة لي نعاه نعيه

    ماذا اصاب القلب تحت ضلوعي

    The heart orders my eyes with crying

    After every evening so obey me

  80. القلب يأمر يا عيوني بالبكى

    من بعد كل عشية فاطيعي

    Cry at night wrapped in darkness

    Sobbing and the night is for sobbing

  81. ابكي بليل حف بالظلمات

    مستعبراً والليل للعبرات

    Cry when you remember your poetry wailing

    After tranquility and stillness of moves

  82. ابكي اذا استذكرت شعرك مجهشا

    بعد الهدوء ووقفة الحركات

    Cry over your life sorrowful for its passing

    Before me, and cry over survival of my life

  83. ابكي حياتك آسفا لذهابها

    قبلي وابكي من بقاء حياتي

    My friend Hafez walked before you so you followed him

    And I remained alone today for calamities

  84. قد سار قبلك حافظ فتبعته

    وبقيت وحدي اليوم للنكبات

    My companions stop for a while, I

    Will come shortly so look at me coming

  85. يا صاحبي قفا قليلا انني

    عما قريب فانظراني آت

    If I die my loved ones will grieve in Iraq

    Sometimes and my enemies will rejoice in Iraq others

  86. ان مت تحزن في العراق احبتي

    حينا وتفرح في العراق عداتي

    I wish if they wanted to criticize me dead

    That none of the enemies be my judges

  87. واود لو راموا انتقادي ميتا

    ان لا يكون من العداة قضاتي

    None remains of the generation whose time has passed

    Except the greatest ruined parts

  88. لم يبق من جيل تقضى عهده

    الا بقايا اعظم نخرات

    Oh Shouqi’s grave I poured with my tears

    Poems perfumed to you

  89. يا قبر شوقي انني من ادمعي

    مهد اليك قصائداً عطرات

    Who would close on elegant meadows

    When morning, outlets of breeze?

  90. من ذا يسد على الرياض انيقة

    عند الصباح منافذ النسمات

    You disappeared on your poetry’s glory sometime

    Away from my eyes and from appearances is disappearance

  91. خرت لعزة شعرك الشعراء

    فكأنهم ارض وانت سماء

    Glorify your adversity, with it pillars

    Of Egypt’s flags shook and blood crept

  92. ما كنت الا كوكبا متوقدا

    قد خر منحدراً له ضوضاء

    You hurried in travel, Shouqi, and you

    Stayed there, you did not say anything

  93. كنا نرى ما كان ضوءك فاعلا

    فلننتظر ماتفعل الظلماء

    They said Tagore is a genius like him

    We said yes if fathers beget!

  94. من بعد در كنت تنظم عقده

    برزت تريد لتلمع الحصباء

  95. لفظ جميل فيه معنى رائع

    هو في المعاني وحده العذراء

  96. اليوم باق للقريض بحوضه

    ماء واخشى ان يجف الماء

  97. ولقد خفيت على ظهورك مدة

    عن اعيني ومن الظهور خفاء

  98. جلل مصابك انه اهتزت له

    اعلام مصر وماجت الدأماء

  99. عجلت في الترحال يا شوقي وقد

    بقيت هنالك لم تقل اشياء

  100. قالوا سينغ عبقري مثله

    قلنا بلى لو انجب الآباء
