قد طحا بالفلاح يقسو الفرات

وله كانت منه تأتي الحياة

The farmer was struck down by the Euphrates

It used to give him life

واصابته في النهاية منه

نكبات وراءها نكبات

And in the end it brought him

Disaster upon disaster

امهات لهن تدعو صغار

وصغار تدعوهم الامهات

Mothers who pray for little ones

And little ones prayed for by mothers

ولقد اصبحوا جميعاً بلا مأ

وى وباتوا وهم جياع عراة

They have all become without shelter

And gone hungry, naked

ذهب الزرع عند ادراكه

والبيت ثم الشياه والبقرات

The crop was lost when ripe

Then the home, the sheep and the cows

كل هذا في ليلة هطلت فيها

السواحي واشتدت الظلمات

All this in a night when floods poured down

And darkness intensified

انما هذه الطبيعة قيد

والنواميس كلها حلقات

Nature itself is shackled

And all its laws are links
