1. هل لمن يرقدون في الالحاد

    يقظة بعد كل هذا الرقاد

    Is there an awakening after all this sleep

    For those lying in atheism?

  2. ما لهم لازمين للترب لا يح

    فزهم للحراك صوت المنادي

    Why do they cling to the soil without living

    Arouse them, the voice of the caller appeals to them

  3. ألهم عودة كما يعد الدي

    ن ام القوم ما لهم من معاد

    Do they have a return as religion promises

    Or are the people without an afterlife

  4. وكأن الموتى على القرب منا

    في قصيّ عنا من الابعاد

    It's as if the dead are near us

    Yet remote from us in distance

  5. افترقنا وعنا من جديد

    نلتقي في غياهب الآباد

    We parted and will meet anew

    In the endless darkness

  6. لا تفيد الاكفان بيضا عليهم

    ولعل البياض مثل السواد

    Shrouds do them no good, white or black

    For whiteness is like darkness

  7. حيرتك الحياة وهي لعمري

    ليس الا تطوراً في الجماد

    Life perplexed you, yet it simply

    Evolves from inanimate matter

  8. انها في الصميم منه وان لم

    يك فيه ظهورها ذا اطراد

    It's intrinsic to it though progress uneven

    It's the force of advancement and struggle

  9. انها سير للتقدم فيه

    انها فيه قوة للجهاد

    Electricity builds what it builds

    On a unity of opposites

  10. انها الكهرباء تبني الذي تبني

    على وحدة من الاضداد

    Brought down to earth on a ray

    From the glowing planet

  11. انها تأتي الارض محمولة فو

    ق شعاع للكوكب الوقاد

    It doesn't die but hides like embers

    In ashes, its fuel never depleted

  12. انها لا تموت بل تختفي كالجمر

    في كومة لها من رماد

    Proof it hasn't died is the human race

    Climbing on skulls of individuals

  13. ما على انها خبت بدليل

    حاسم كون وقدها غير باد

    Children's lives are but

    Lives of fathers and forefathers

  14. تخذ النوع في الورى للتعالي

    سلماً من جماجم الأفراد

    So life willed that fathers live on through sons

    Take care not to die, lest catastrophes await

  15. ما حياة الابناء في الارض الا

    من حياة الآباء والاجداد

    No studious examiner of nature escapes

    The charge of atheism

  16. فلقد شاءت الحياة قديما

    ان يعيش الآباء في الاولاد

    The finest people in every land

    Oppress one another

  17. احرصي يا حياة ان لا تموتي

    فلك الكارثات بالمرصاد

    I've never seen the weak but as

    Food for their brutal, forceful cousins

  18. ليس من يدرس الطبيعة بحا

    ثا بناج من تهمة الالحاد

    Nature has grown boundless

    With no confines or limits

  19. ان ارقى الاحياء في كل ارض

    بشر بعضه على البعض عاد

    Contemplate it and you see

    Signs of purpose evident

  20. ما رأيت الضعاف الا طعاما

    لبني عمها الغلاظ الشداد

    I fell for life in the shadow of time

    With a name and place in my heart

  21. كبرت هذه الطبيعة حتى

    وسعت لا نهاية الابعاد

    Tell me, O soul, who am I and what are you?

    What is my origin and destiny?

  22. ان تأملتها رأيت عليها

    اثر القصد ظاهراً والسداد

    What is my life and Allah's aim for it?

    What is my existence and why was I created?

  23. استحب الحياة في ظلّ دهر

    باسم لي وسهمه في فؤادي

    How did free will come about in us

    What links the spirit to the body?

  24. اخبريني يا نفس من انا ماذا

    انت مني ما مبدئ ما معادي

    Teach me what you know

    Perhaps I will find guidance, O soul

  25. ما حياتي وغاية الله منها

    ما وجودي والقصد من ايجادي

    You, O mind, are in all my life

    The support upon which I depend

  26. كيف جاءت تقوى الارادة فينا

    ما علاقات الروح بالاجساد

    Whenever I need guidance

    O mind, you are that guide

  27. علميني بما به لك علم

    فلعلي يا نفس القى رشادي

    I'm accustomed to being candid

    So I'll say what I believe

  28. انت يا عقل في جميع حياتي

    سند ينتهي اليه اعتمادي

    If my honesty is a sin

    It's part of my struggle

  29. واذا كانت حاجة لي الى ها

    د فيا عقل انت ذاك الهادي

    I've chosen hell as my refuge

    And left paradise to the ascetics

  30. قد تعودت ان اكون صريحا

    فاقول الذي عليه اعتقادي

    This is me, I cannot change

    Myself one day or my nature

  31. ان تكن مني الصراحة اثما

    فهو جزء متممم لجهادي

    I'm not about to reform myself

    Unless some sudden disaster knocks me down

  32. فقد اخترت لي جهنم مثوى

    وتركت الجنان للزهاد

    I remain a poet whose pillar

    Old age has corroded and eaten away

  33. انا هذا ولست اقوى على تغيير

    نفسي يوماً او استعدادي

    I've associated long with men

    Some were again my friends

  34. انا من جوى لست منحدرا

    الا اذا شق حادث منطادي

    Some draw near you, and you know not

    Is this one peaceful or an enemy

  35. لم ازل شاعراً هد ركني

    كبر لي وفت في اعضادي

    These tears that fall

    Are the essence of my anguish

  36. ولقد عاشرت الرجال طويلا

    واذا الاصدقاء منهم اعاد

    Many excellent poems

    Were prey to hatred

  37. ولقد يدنو البعض منك فلا تد

    ري أهذا مسالم أم معاد

    You don't know, when you hear my verse

    If it is weeping or chanting

  38. انما هذه الدموع تهاوى

    من عيون عصارة الاكباد

    O poetry, you are my pride but

    In lands far from my home

  39. رب شعر على الاجادة فيه

    كان منهم فريسة الاحقاد

    What a stranger by the Tigris' side

    And what a rebel by the Tigris' side

  40. انت لا تدري حين تسمع شعري

    أبكاء ذا أم ترنم شاد

    They wounded my old heart

    Then left my wound untended

  41. ايها الشعر انت عزي ولكن

    في بلاد بعيدة عن بلادي

    Their wounding of my heart is torture

    Worse than swords of Indian steel

  42. كم غريب في جنب دجلة راو

    وقريب في جنب دجلة صاد

    One who has surrendered to the executioner

    May sleep one night in peace

  43. جرحوا في شيخوختي القلب مني

    ثم ابقوا جرحي بغير ضماد

    Why does talk of that surrender

    Cast doubt over what I say?

  44. ان في جرحهم لقلبي عذاباً

    دونه القتل بالسيوف الحداد

    Do not blame the misleading one

    For the misled may be a guide

  45. ربما نام ليله مستريحا

    بعض من اخلدوا الى الجلاد

  46. أي شيء يلقي بنفسك ريبا

    من حديثي عن ذلك الاخلاد

  47. لا تذم المضل للشك فيه

    فلعل المضلّ للناس هاد
