1. صبوا على الاسماع نارا

    واحشوا فم الغضبي حجارا

    Pour fire upon their ears,

    And stuff the mouth of wrath with stones.

  2. بثوا باوجه من يريدون

    الشرور لكم شرارا

    Hurl into the faces of those who seek

    Evils against you, flying sparks.

  3. سنوا بمعترك الحيا

    ة لساعة الذود الشفارا

    Sharpen in the battleground of li-

    -fe, for the hour of defense, the blades.

  4. كونوا كما يبغي الابا

    ء على كرامتكم غيارى

    Be, as noble forebears de-

    -sire, fiercely protective of your honor.

  5. هبوا كزوبعة تثير

    بكل ناحية غبارا

    Rise up like a whirlwind that stirs

    In every direction clouds of dust.

  6. احكوا البراكين التي

    تأتي من الضغط انفجارا

    Emulate the volcanoes that

    Erupt violently under pressure.

  7. لا تبتغوا من غير انفسكم

    لانفسكم ظهارا

    Seek not from anyone besides yourselves

    Support and defense for yourselves.

  8. واروا الذين يرون فيكم

    خصلة العجز اقتدارا

    And show those who see in you

    A trait of weakness, your true might.

  9. ان المسالم ليس يلقى

    منهم الا احتقارا

    For the meek man encounters

    Nothing from them but contempt.

  10. لا تسمعوا لمنافق

    يبدى المعاذير الكثارا

    Do not listen to a hypocrite

    Who proffers endless excuses.

  11. دوروا مع الحق الذي

    يرنو اليكم حيث دارا

    Turn along with the truth that

    Gazes upon you, wherever it turns.

  12. واذا الصفوف تلاحمت

    في الحرب فاجتنبوا الفرارا

    And when the battle ranks clash

    In war, avoid all retreat.

  13. ومن المنية للحيا

    ة بجرأة خوضوا الغمارا

    And from the clutches of death unto li-

    -fe, plunge boldly into the abyss.

  14. ان البوار جزاء من

    يخشى من الجبن البوارا

    For ruin is the recompense of him

    Who, out of cowardice, fears ruin.

  15. اما الكماة فانهم

    يأبون نكصا واندحارا

    As for the valiant warriors, they

    Refuse to fall back or be defeated.

  16. يحكى اللسان اذا صدعت

    به من السيف الغرارا

    The tongue, when you proclaim with it,

    Resembles the sharp edge of a sword.

  17. واذا تقوسمت المنا

    فع فاجعلوا لكم الخيارا

    And when benefits are di-

    -vided, secure for yourselves the first choice.

  18. الحر فعال فما

    هو من يماري او يمارى

    The free man is a doer, and he

    Neither wrangles nor is wrangled with.

  19. ان الألى غرسوا مبا

    دئهم سيجنون الثمارا

    Truly, those who planted their prin-

    -ciples shall harvest the fruits.

  20. انتم احق الناس ان

    ترعوا لنفسكم الذمارا

    You are the most entitled of people

    To safeguard your own sacred rights.

  21. هل تقبلون لنفسكم

    عارا وللاعقاب نارا

    Would you accept for yourselves

    Shame, and for your offspring fire?

  22. ليس الذي يؤذي فيسكت

    جامدا الا جدارا

    He who is harmed yet remains silent,

    Motionless, is nothing but a wall.

  23. اما قصارى الساكتين

    عن الحقوق فلا قصارى

    As for the limit of those who stay silent

    Before stolen rights, they reach no end.

  24. ان النجاح امامكم

    فامشوا ولا تخشوا عثارا

    Indeed, success lies before you,

    So march forth and fear no stumbling.

  25. لقد انحدرتم فالبدا

    ر الى العلا ثم البدارا

    You have descended low, so has-

    -ten to the heights, hasten now!

  26. عفوا ولا تستبدلوا

    للحرص بالشرف النضارا

    Live with dignity, and do not trade,

    Out of greed, honor for glistening gold.

  27. ان الغنى في كل وقت

    كان ثوبا مستعارا

    For wealth, at all times,

    Has only ever been a borrowed robe.

  28. كان الذي كنتم ظننتم

    انه ريح خسارا

    What you had once presumed

    To be a gain proved only a loss.

  29. يا قوم ان اذعنتم

    للذل اغضبتم نزارا

    O my people, if you submit

    To humiliation, you anger Nizar.

  30. اللَه للوطن العزيز

    فانه يشكو الصغارا

    God help our cherished homeland,

    For it complains of utter debasement,

  31. متجهما لليأس تبصر

    فوق سحنته اصفرارا

    Glum with despair, you see

    Upon its countenance a sickly pallor.

  32. واخاف ان يقضى لشدة

    ما المّ به انتحارا

    And I fear it may end, from the severity

    Of what befell it, in suicide.

  33. صبراً فان وراء هذاذ

    الليل يا وطني نهارا

    Have patience, for behind this

    Dark night, O my homeland, is daybreak,

  34. وسيهتك الصبح الذي

    يأتي من الحلك الستارا

    And the morning that arrives shall tear

    Away the veil of pitch-black darkness.

  35. ما كنت اخشى شرهم

    في بدئه حتى استطارا

    I never used to fear their evil

    In its beginning, until it spread far and wide.

  36. قالوا لنا اختاروا وما

    في الامر اعطونا الخيارا

    They told us: "Choose!", yet in this matter

    They never granted us a choice.

  37. قالوا استقلوا ثم سدوا

    الصحف واعتقلوا الحرارا

    They said: "Be independent!", then shut down

    The newspapers and imprisoned the free.

  38. ان السياسد في جميع

    بقاعها تبدي ازورارا

    Indeed, politics in all

    Its realms shows nothing but deceit.

  39. ارسل الى اجوائها

    نظراً تر النقع المثارا

    Cast toward its horizons

    A glance, and you will see the dust of turmoil stirred.

  40. انا على جرف من الاخطار

    ينتظر انهيارا

    We stand upon a cliff of perils,

    Awaiting imminent collapse.

  41. يا قوم فكوا عنكم

    الاصفاد انكم اسارى

    O my people, break from yourselves

    The chains, for you are captives!

  42. شبع الدخيل وانكم

    تشكون في الوطن السعارا

    The intruder has gorged, while you

    Complain in your own homeland of ravenous hunger.

  43. لا تسفحوا دمعاً فان

    الدمع ليس ينيل ثارا

    Do not shed tears, for

    Tears will never win revenge.

  44. ودعوا الدموع تمثل الاحزان

    في مقل العذاراى

    Leave tears to mirror sorrows

    In the eyes of young maidens.

  45. ان الاسى نار بقلبي

    وهي تستعر استعارا

    Grief is a fire in my heart,

    Raging and fiercely blazing.

  46. حريتي تحكي بليل

    كوكبا عني توارى

    My freedom resembles, in the dark night,

    A star that has hidden away from me.

  47. يا ماء اهلي اين انت

    فانني اشكو الاوارا

    O fresh water of my people, where are you?

    For I cry out from burning thirst.

  48. اما حياتي ف يالعرا

    ق فانها ذهبت خسارا

    As for my life in I-

    -raq, it has gone in utter ruin.

  49. الحق قد قتلوه فيه

    وقد جرى دمع جبارا

    Truth—they have murdered it within,

    And tears have flowed in vain.

  50. ووددت لو اسطيع قبل

    منيتي عنه فرارا

    And I wish that I were able, before

    My death, to flee away from it.
