1. بغداد أمست وقد أزرى بها النوب

    تبكي على عزها الماضي وتنتحبُ

    Baghdad now lies, laid low by calamities;

    She weeps for her bygone glory and sobs—

  2. أيامَ كانت تَهادى في شبيبتها

    كأنها البان مافي ظهرها حدب

    In days when, in her youth, she moved with graceful sway,

    As though she were a bān tree, with no stoop in her back.

  3. كيف القرار على الأرزاء في بلدي

    إن السفينة في الأمواج تضطرب

    How can there be repose amid the calamities in my country?

    Indeed, the ship is tossing among the waves.
