1. متع السمع والبصر

    قبل ان تبلغ الكبر

    Enjoy hearing and sight

    Before you reach old age

  2. فاذا ما بلغته

    ذهب السمع والبصر

    For when old age comes

    Hearing and sight are gone

  3. واذا ما هما معاً

    ذهبا مضك الضجر

    And when both are gone

    Tedium and boredom come

  4. ثم لم يبق في الحيا

    ة للذاتها اثر

    Then nothing of life itself

    Remains anymore

  5. وتمرد على تقا

    ليد تفضى إلى الضرر

    And rebellion against traditions

    Leads only to harm

  6. أنما الحر من تمرد

    حتى على القدر

    Only the free rebel

    Even against fate

  7. كن جسورا اذا طلبت

    فقد فاز من جسر

    Be bold when you seek

    For winners dared

  8. وتيقظ اذا هممت

    وباشر على حذر

    And wake when you intend

    And proceed cautiously

  9. لا تعيبنني على

    خطأ لي اذا ظهر

    Do not blame me for an

    Error when it appears

  10. أي ذي كبرة مشى

    فوق وعر وما عثر

    What great one walked

    On rugged ground and didn’t stumble

  11. حبذا ميعة الشبا

    ب ولا حبذا الكبر

    Best are the manners of youth

    Not those of old age

  12. حسن الروض في الربيع

    اذا طله المطر

    A garden is beautiful in spring

    When showered with rain

  13. والفراش الذي يطو

    ف جميلا على الزهر

    And a moth circling beautifully

    Over flowers

  14. وسلام على ذكاء

    ووجه لها اغر

    Peace be upon intelligence

    And a face that captivates

  15. حبذا الزهر قد تبسم

    والصبح قد سفر

    Best are blossoms smiling

    At dawn that uncovered

  16. قد اراد الهزار ان

    ينفث السحر فاقتدر

    The jest wished to breathe

    Magic and succeeded

  17. سحرتني عنادل

    تتنزى على الشجر

    You enchanted me, nighthawks

    Perching in trees

  18. باغاريد عن محا

    كاتها يعجز الوتر

    With their playful tunes beyond

    What strings can express

  19. نعم ما ابقت العنا

    دل في النفس من اثر

    Yes, the nighthawks left in the soul

    No trace

  20. ليس من لم يكن تحسس

    منها سوى حجر

    Only a rock feels from them

    Nothing but that

  21. ارسل الطرف للسما

    ء وانعم بها النظر

    Send your gaze to the sky and enjoy

    Looking at it

  22. تبصر النجم لؤلؤاً

    بين ابعادها انتثر

    You see a star like a pearl

    Scattered between its horizons

  23. هي للناظرين ديوان

    شعر قد ازدهر

    It is for onlookers a collection

    Of splendid poetry

  24. كم به من قصائد

    كل ابياتها غرر

    With so many verses

    All precious pearls

  25. اشبهت روضة بها

    كل صنف من الزهر

    It resembles a garden in it

    Every flower variety

  26. انها معرض الكوا

    كب والشمس والقمر

    It is the exhibit of planets

    And sun and moon

  27. واذا الشمس اسفرت

    وبدا وجهها الاغرّ

    And when the sun rises

    Revealing its bright face

  28. سرب النور دافقا

    مثل سيل قد انحدر

    The light bursts forth pouring

    Like a torrent rushing down

  29. صور تبسط النفو

    س فما اجمل الصور

    Creating images that expand

    Souls, how beautiful the images!

  30. وهناك المجر فانظر

    ملياً الى المجر

    And there is the galaxy, so look

    At the galaxy attentively

  31. يشبه النهر قد طغى

    ولشطيه قد غمر

    It resembles an overflowing river

    With waves overlapping

  32. او صراطا الى الجنا

    ن قد امتد واستمر

    Or a path to Heaven

    Stretching endlessly

  33. رصفته ملائك

    باليواقيت والدرر

    Its pavement made by angels

    With aquamarines and pearls

  34. كم بهذا الفضاء من

    سعة تدهش الفكر

    How much vastness is in this space

    That amazes thought!

  35. وشموس يدرن فيه

    ويرمين بالشرر

    And orbiting suns

    Shooting out sparks

  36. ايّ سحر حوت عصاً

    حركت هذه الأكر

    What sorcery contains a wand

    That stirred these spheres?

  37. يا لها من عوالم

    ما لها فيه مستقر

    What worlds without

    Any stable abode in them!

  38. كسفين جرى بها

    عاصف هب واستمر

    Like a vessel borne by

    Stormy winds ongoing

  39. والذي ظل خافيا

    هو اضعاف ما ظهر

    That which remains hidden

    Is multiples of what appears

  40. انما هذه الطبيعة

    بحر طما وثر

    Nature is but a turbulent sea

    With foaming waves

  41. لم تكن هذه العوا

    لم فيه سوى جزر

    In it were only islands

    Not anything else

  42. ما الذي الحياة لو

    لا المنايا على الاثر

    What is life unless

    Followed by death?

  43. انما الموت آفة

    ليس تبقى ولا تذر

    Death is but a plague

    That does not remain or spare

  44. واذا الاثرياء او

    دوا فمثواهم حفر

    When the wealthy die

    Their burial is a pit

  45. انما الراحلون لم

    يأتنا منهم خبر

    The departed did not

    Bring us any news

  46. ذهبوا مثل ما اتوا

    زمرا بعدها زمر

    They left as they came

    Groups after groups

  47. بعد اني اموت فاليد

    فعوا بي الى سقر

    When I die, take me

    To my grave

  48. لك في الموت حين تهلك

    ورد بلا صدر

    For you in death, when you perish

    A farewell without any farewell

  49. لا تؤمل تجددا

    لزجاج قد انكسر

    Do not hope for the mending

    Of shattered glass

  50. اترى الروح باقيا

    بعد جسم له دثر

    Do you see the soul remaining

    After a body it shrouded?

  51. رب حسناء كالعرا

    رة في طرفها حور

    A beautiful woman like a bride

    With lovely eyes

  52. ارغموها على الزوا

    ج بشيخ به اشر

    They coerced her to marry

    An old man with villainy

  53. ملها بعد ان قضى

    الشيخ من جسمها الوطر

    Her days with him after

    The old man took her virginity

  54. ضامها في قساوة

    سامها الذل واحتقر

    He oppressed her with cruelty

    And humiliation and contempt

  55. كسر القلب من ضجيعته

    ثم ما جبر

    It broke the heart of her lover

    Yet it was not mended

  56. ذاك اثم له شنا

    عته غير مغتفر

    That is an unforgivable sin

    However she tried to repent

  57. ما باسماء عثرة

    انما حظها عثر

    O Sheikh, your heart

    Is harder than stone

  58. مسكت باليد المليحة

    قلبا لها انفطر

    Go away, you fiend, death

    Does not bring wretchedness

  59. وبكت تندب الشبا

    ب بدمع قد انفجر

    Sleep with the snakes underground

    For they are better than humans

  60. كان في الخد دمعها

    مثل طل على زهر

    And the Sheikh wept in sorrow

    Regretfully shedding tears

  61. هو شكوى على القضا

    ء وعتب على القدر

    And threw himself at night

    From the roof and killed himself

  62. شبح الموت قد بدا

    ودنت ساعة الخطر

    The witness of matters is needless

    Of any news or reports

  63. فلقد سلها الشقا

    ء وماتت على الاثر

    Help a people without burden,

    O Lord, the Ever-Watchful!

  64. اكبر الضيم ما تقا

    سيه انثى من الذكر

    A snake bit his leg

    By surprise, a male

  65. ايها الشيخ ان قلبك

    اقسى من الحجر

    Now he cannot walk

    Or he walks stumbling

  66. اذهبي يا كعاب فالموت

    لا يورث الضجر

    He wept for his lost glory

    After having flourished

  67. ضاجعي حية الثرى

    فهي خير من البشر

    They usurped the orchards his hands planted

    When the fruits came to term

  68. وبكى الشيخ للأسى

    نادما يسكب العبر

    The beasts preyed on his cattle

    Sheep and cows

  69. ورمى نفسه بليل

    من السطح وانتحر

    And he tried to break free

    At times but in vain

  70. والذي شاهد الامو

    ر غني عن الخبر

    Say to one who cried your crying

    Does not relieve harm

  71. ساعد المالك المهيمن

    شعبا بلا وزر

    Nor restore usurped rights

    However plentiful the tears

  72. لدغت رجله على

    غرة حية ذكر

    Repel evil if you can

    With good, or weaponry and fire

  73. فهو لا يستطيع مشيا

    واما مشى عثر

    The Sheikh asks drowned

    In worries, what is happening?

  74. قد بكى مجده الذي

    غاض من بعد ما زخر

    O Sheikh, you float

    In endless sea swell

  75. غصبوا غرس كفه

    عند ما ادرك الثمر

    After two hours, Sheikh

    You will drown in the creek

  76. اسرته الليوث تأ

    زرها الشاء والبقر

    O Sheikh, no peace to one

    Whose boat is wrecked

  77. ولقد حاول التحرر

    حينا وما قدر

    O Sheikh, protect what

    You feared, for there is no escape

  78. قل لمن قد بكى بكا

    ؤك لا يدفع الضرر

    Like an enormous foaming camel

    And when death draws near

  79. لا يرد الحقوق قد

    غصبت دمع انهمر

    Caution does not help

    Fortune only smiled at you

  80. ادفع الشر ان قدر

    ت على دفعه بشر

    To mock and ridicule you

    It deceived you, Sheikh

  81. واعتصم بالرصاص والنار

    والقار والزبر

    Again and again it deceived you

    O people, I have no

  82. يسأل الشيخ وهو في

    غمرة ما هو الخبر

    Cloak or turban of lies

    Only avoiding those who

  83. ايها الشيخ انت تسبح

    في عيلم زخر

    Dishonored women and drank wine

    My paradise, if entered

  84. انت من بعد ساعتين

    غريق من الخور

    With you would be hellfire to me

    It will restore freedom to wander

  85. ايها الشيخ لا سلا

    م لمن فلكه انكسر

    When I travel again

    I do not stay in a country

  86. ايها الشيخ حم ما

    كنت تخشى فلا مفر

    Where I am despised

    Where life seems like

  87. ها هو الموج زاحف

    مثل طود قد اشمخر

    Torment for those aware

    Where sky is a tumultuous sea

  88. واذا ما دنا الحما

    م فلا ينفع الحذر

    With showers of sparks

    Where sunlight has for my eyes

  89. انما الدهر بابتسا

    ماته منك قد سخر

    Only piercing sharp thorns

    Where I am like a broken

  90. غرك الدهر ثم غرك

    يا شيخ ثم غر

    And hollow trunk

    Where I am a stranger

  91. ايها القوم لا لبا

    نة عندي ولا وطر

    To home and family

    And the nomads will welcome me

  92. غير نأيي عن الذين

    تجنوا من البطر

    In Mudar and Bakr lands

    If death comes to me

  93. جنتي ان دخلتها

    معكم فهي لي سقر

    Then death is expected

    Whenever I bring you

  94. سيعيدن لي اذا

    سرت حريتي السفر

    Guidance, you say blasphemy!

    O palm tree, you shaded me

  95. انني لا اقيم في

    بلد فيه احتقر

    But your shade diminished

    Where are your equal branches

  96. وكأن الحياة فيه

    عذاب لمن شعر

    And shade and blossoms?

    Maybe peace with the foe

  97. وكأن السماء بحر

    خضم من الشرر

    But no peace with fate

    The illness overwhelmed me, no

  98. وكأن الشعاع من

    وخزه اعيني ابر

    Escape from its havoc

    O night, if your dawn

  99. وكأني من العوا

    صف جذع قد انقعر

    Bursts forth blazing

    O dawn, you are poetry

  100. وكأني امرؤ غريب

    عن الدار والاسر

    With innovative meaning

    O poetry, you are solace

  101. وستصفو لي الاصا

    ئل في مضر والبكر

    For my remaining days

    Best is poetry, it retains

  102. واذا ما المّ بي الموت

    فالموت منتظر

    From the soul traces of its sayer

    You suffice, O poet who

  103. كلما جئتكم بها

    دية قلتم كفر

    Says with true feelings!

    For the creative poet is nobler

  104. ايها الدوح كان لي

    فيك ظل قد انحسر

    Than all of mankind

  105. اين اوراقك النضيرة

    والفيئ والزهر

  106. ربما سالم العدو

    وما سالم القدر

  107. عضل الداء بي فما

    لي من فتكه مفر

  108. ايها الليل ان صبحك

    حسبيلو انفجر

  109. ايها الصبح انت شعر

    ومعناك مبتكر

  110. ايها الشعر انت

    سلوة ايامي الاخر

  111. حبذا الشعر فيه من

    نفس من قاله اثر

  112. حسبك الشاعر الذي

    قال يشدو بما شعر

  113. انما الشاعر المصوّر

    اسمى من البشر
